Haha, I remember the commercials with Crocodile Dundee and thought that Subaru was an Australian car maker because of it. That was back when I didn't know car companies aside from Toyota and Honda (slight exageration).

Being a huge fan of Toyota and coming from a family that has owned Tundras, 4Runners, Solaras (:barf:) and a few Lexus SUVs, I wanted to stick with the brand when looking for a cool commuter car. I HATED the fact that the car came with the Scion name. I don't consider myself part of their target demographic at all, but I still really wanted a fun-to-drive, sexy-as-hell sports car from Toyota to get me to and from work with decent MPG's so I bit the bullet, bought the FRS and popped off those Scion badges as soon as humanly possible (except for that pesky boot image splash screen on the HU).

[...] I'm more proud of the fact that its heritage is part Toyota, so those are the badges that I choose to display. At the end of the day, it doesn't come down to insecurity, just personal preference.

Quick thought : I've never really been able to understand that argument [brand association/pride in the heritage]. Obviously, I don't feel the need to associate to a brand's image. I do value a brand's product if they are known to make quality products, no matter under which banner. I just feel that wether it's a Lexus, Toyota or Scion, they come from "the same plant" (trying to think of a witty metaphore or expression... none come to mind :( )

I do respect this argument, and I think it's only now that I read it the way you wrote it that I can say that I do. I previously thought it sounded ridiculous to have pride in a badge as I would try comparing that argument to someone having pride in wearing Banana Republic instead of Gap. It's not so much that you prefer Banana Republic over Gap, but that you've been accustomed to it (flame me if you want over this ridiculous example :lol: . Probably the worst example possible...).

In terms of beauty in the badge's logo itself, I never really found ANY of them appealing (wether it be Scion, Toyota, Ford, Acura, BMW, Porsche, Ferrari or Lamborghini to name a few. I might like Cadillac & Aston Martin... but that's just me...). It's either a "bland" or unappealing badge to me (that Kia "K" badge anyone? :barf: ). I guess that must be the biggest thing that I find "weird" when reading a post coming from someone who enjoys the Toyota badge.

Personnally, the only thing I would want to do in the "badging" department is unbadging any name. I find it unaesthetical (probably mispelt that) to have a name on a car's rear end. Throw's the symetry off, plus I find that if you don't know what that car is, I'll leave you in the mystery (unless you politely come and ask me and we can strike up a conversation, help each other have a good day :) ). If you know what it is, you don't need some silly name (FR-why the hyphen-S) to remind you. Only exception would be if the car has many trim levels with varying mechanics (first example that comes to mind for me is the last gen of celica that had GT and GT-S trims, both with different engines and transmissions).

As always, at the end of the day. To each their own. It's your car. Not mine. I'm still rocking my pre-millenial Saturn and its unrusted ass :party0030:

Well to me this this is a Toyota. Yes its built and powered by Subaru but who cares. It's heritage is an 86. So I will purchase it and then rebadge the first day I get it. "Scion GT86" just doesn't do it for me...:P Now to find inexpensive badges..lol

Scion around here is rare and considered "exotic" by the general public (not talking about "car guys").

This is so true, scion to me before i bought this car was awe inspiring and a fire blazing emblem looked exotic

This wasn't that long ago (5 years or so).

Can't believe it took this long for someone to bring up the Toyota 86 heritage as their reason. Makes me wonder how many people are just swapping to Toyota badges under peer pressure...

DaJo 02-27-2015 05:12 AM

On the topic of badges, why do people on here get the "GT86" badge? I mean unless you are going for the European market look, then fine...

I bet most don't even know that GT86 only exist in Europe...

In the Japanese Domestic Market, it's just simply called "Toyota 86" (Pronounced eight-six, not eighty-six)

swarb 02-27-2015 05:25 AM

@Choco you owe me one.

The chrome toyota badge looks way better. Plus what's the point of having the 86 on the side of the car if it's a scion?

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought they were Australian; their marketing back in the early 2000s (especially with the Baja, since the Aussies love their utes) made it hard to tell haha.

I've had people ask if my car is a 2 door WRX.:iono:

I'm glad we can agree though... or do we? Still not sure :iono:

Let me put it this way: I like wearing Nike shoes. I've always liked Nike shoes for their good looks, durability and brand image (aside from that whole child sweat shop fiasco, a.k.a. "unintended acceleration" for Toyota). Sure, I've worn other shoes and they were OK, but when looking for a new pair of shoes that I know I will enjoy, I start with the Nike section.

I steer clear of the Skechers section entirely. They just don't appeal to me and I don't feel like I fall into their target demographic.

If Nike bought Skechers and made a badass shoe with the Skechers logo to try and pump up the brand, I'd just cut the Skechers logo off and sew on a Nike check haha :party0030:

I rebadged mine because out side of North America, Scion does not exist. Also I am pretty sure my Ownership/Insurance says Toyota FR-S lol

It is sold worldwide under three different brands with respective model names:
  • Toyota 86 in Asia, South Africa, South America and Australia; GT86 in Europe; both of the preceding names in New Zealand; FT86 in Jamaica;
  • Subaru BRZ worldwide;
  • Scion FR-S in the United States and Canada.

Hope this helps.

Why the F does the exact same car have 5 different names ... 2 makes sense, 5 is a bit much.

richardM 02-28-2015 02:42 AM

I have a black FRS and the silver badges and "86 pistons" stuck out like a sore thumb. Maybe $10 and an hour later and they were plastidipped black. New plain black plate holder and the dealer decal peeled off, cleaned and spot waxed.

What fanboy am I ??? Do I put TRD or STI stickers on the back for more horsepower? If my car is a Scion, all I got is "Ken Gushi seems like a nice young man."

As the badges are all black on black now, people just have to know. They do. When springtime comes, more blackouts in the works.

I removed the silver "Subaru" and "BRZ" lettering and replaced my silver plate cover with a plain black one too. I don't like all that silver on my white black and red car. It's a big cosmetic improvement IMO. I left the Subaru badge just so people will know it's not a Scion : P

I considered painting the lettering black and putting it back on, but I'm too lazy to bother.

wil5bart 03-09-2015 07:07 AM

I removed the badges to change the look then after a year I installed them back.

tracerit 03-09-2015 07:14 AM

what adhesive/tape is recommended for retaping badges back on?
