So what about the threshold for AT's? I'm pushing about 300whp/225wtq with a trans cooler atm, has anyone blown them up yet?

Damn. So I'm guessing you guys experience these failures while at the track or in some other scenario where you're shifting near red line right?
In other words, if I plan on mostly casual driving and just going to the track once in a while, my transmission should last longer? |

Wonder if these guys are blowing transmissions?

I don't think all these guys are running into gearbox issues... [ame="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iM-HPZvbdtY"]織戸16台抜き!!GAZOO Racing 86/BRZ Race vol.2 in Fujispeedway - YouTube[/ame] |
Not everyone has this issue, just like not everyone has crickets, or the rear deck lid rattle, or condensation in the tail lights. That said it is a relatively common occurrence. I just don't have the power to shear a gear completely, although I kind of wish I did haha.
|
I think we also have to keep in mind that this isn't an A80, the powerplant isn't a 2JZ, and it doesn't have a Getrag V160 gearbox. I think being able to handle doubling the wtq output through the transmission is impressive. The engine being even more impressive, in Reaper's case, being able to push 460whp (~300whp increase) through the FA20 on stock internals.
All that said, I too have both crickets and crappy synchros. The latter being the scariest and the most inexcusable, imho. We just have to remember that this isn't a 3400lb beast. This isn't the successor to the Supra. It came with only 200bhp/165whp because it wasn't created to be the next highway king; it was made to be an affordable little sports car that takes corners like a dream. I think, especially using Reaper as an example, this platform is exactly what I was looking for... If the synchros issue can be fixed (be it aftermarket or warranty), then I think I should be able to safely push 350-400whp with about 250-300wtq. I'd say that's pretty good for this little car, especially running on stock internals. Thoughts? |

If it was gigantic it should work perfect with every tune :respekt: |
Just a thought here, comparing power number is meaningless as soon as those numbers don't come from the same Dyno, and if you don't have the stock curve. Its like comparing apples and oranges ...
Maybe that 450 hp one would read about the same as the 250 other one, on the same dyno, maybe the difference in the reality is much thinner than the number would suggest. The engine, can take a lot, the internals ... sadly not so much, specifically the bearings. The oiling is also an issue and can lead to major troubles. Again comparing numbers from various tunes isn't necessarily the best read of what the engine can take, analyzing the failures is a much more pragmatic approach to determine where are the limits :) |

As you mentioned HaDDeS, among others, the oil pressure is another major issue (which I meant to address in my post, but I think it got lost whenever my session timed out and I had to rewrite my post  ). I've heard the rods are another weak spot, but I'm not sure. I'm really curious how long Reaper's will last, since it's been running that kind of power. I'm somewhat intrigued that his has lasted this long. When it fails, I'm especially curious to see what failed and why. |

Easy, a car that pushes 400whp goes behind the FRS and drives to push it. Duh!! Joke ;D What is N/A? What is IHE? The maximum the FA20 can go it 400.83 whp |

Oh yes, I understand =p. I am still new to the acronyms. Thank you so much :D |

I found a guy that would make me custom carbon syncros but he wanted more money than what a new transmission costs. And if it worked it probably just shear 4th and wreck everything in there. I also have a contact with a shop that does sequential conversions for stis and Hondas but he wanted 6k and couldn't say if it would be stronger nor not. 6k is more than a tremec swap and 75% of the way into a v160swap.
And before someone says it the r154 does not fit in the tunnel and neither does the Nissan z transmission. |
Any success/improvement in longevity in running a transmission fluid cooler? Thats the most affordable solution I can think of.
|
Is anyone making stronger gearsets for the 6sp? I only see the Cusco close-ratio, which only changes 1st and 2nd.

And that's brings me so many unpleasant memories of my 4G63 (talon AWD). Apparently that gear box(es) we're made out of cheese... Ufff it's all coming back! The heat soak, the timing belt, fry clutch and the easy fading brakes. Man that was mechanic 101 to 3560. Now I'm trying to avoid that rout with the FA20, so ALL fluid should be cool at all times (peace of mind) and AT (no easy clutch upgrade) (BTW that was the fuse that was remove and after that trany start to fall like flys) in the AWD Talon... A good combination was a heavy duty pressure plate with the OEM disc (good because last longer than stoke and didn't break trany as easy)... Outstanding setup? Didn't find it :( Just move on. @Reaper, have you buy chance fitted an STi 6 spd yet? Assuming that'd be more cost effective than a TKO or T56 or super magnum and definitely a V160.
Yes you'd need a rwd converted one, but would that tack on a lot of cost? Iat just popped into my head, didn't really think about it lol |
