The Celica.. Celica/Supra has from the beginning been a sports model. The AE86 Corolla on the other hand has not. Sports model Celicas have been RWD or AWD. The 2000+ Celicas were the first non traditional sports car configuration of the car and that somewhat failed miserably, I say somewhat only because everything about that car I liked, the only thing the car needed was RWD, it was written all over it. If they aren't bring all-trac back at least revert back to old RWD days.

They should of never used the 86 number name lineage as they have but instead say: "This is the return of an iconic compact sports car, from road racing to it's roots in rally. THIS is the NEW 2012 Toyota Celica with a special focus on weight and balance derived from it's little sibling the old AE86 Corolla. We at Toyota always wanted to improve on the Celica and as such we feel this is the right direction for our company."

Now think if you were going to use a new chassis and you shared the chassis with Subaru. What would you name your car for future possible purposes. CELICA means it could be RWD or say AWD in the future, what better way then to partner with Subaru on this. They could do a GT-FOUR with Subarus AWD and model the chassis or Supra in existing chassis, it's a win-win.

^I agree with the general ideas behind what you said... except saying that should have called it the celica from the begining. The problem with that is two things. One we still don't know if its going to be celica, that is entirely rumor. And two even if they wanted to call it celica, saying it's a new celica would lock the name it and they wouldn't be able to change it later on.

The car was inspired by the ae86 but they never said it was a new 86. It was inspired by the way that car drove and they said this would be comparable in driving feel. Which it will (hopefully) but the name they never said where it was going. The only thing I dislike is the fact that in the US they're putting the car under a completely different brand...:paddle:

That's not true at all actually. The AE86 is a sports model. Whats not sporty about it? Ohhhh, you mean the Sprinter Trueno / Levin series of Corolla's dating back to the 70's that the AE86 is apart of? Oh, why then you're wrong again...as those are also sports models, having been sport coupe's with a performance oriented package since their inception.

I think all of the people using the same era of RWD Celicas (and this is a general observation not aimed at PA's quoted post) has a basis of being a better sports car than the AE86 (and ergo, the FT-86's proper predecessor) is kinda humorous. Not only did the AE86 out corner it, and was much more nimble, it even had a better 0-60, and only ~.5 to .3 seconds slower in the Quarter Mile, depending on your source. Yo yeah, Celica is that much better.

You can't bring the Celica Supra/ Supra even remotely into this debate....the FT-86 is not, repeat, NOT even slightly aimed at rekindling the feel, design, and sports heritage of that lineup.

GenkiElite 06-13-2011 08:34 PM

Keep the Celica name. Who cares? Hell, the Celica has been a "chick car" for 26 years so if you're all so worried about a name you should think about the image attached to it.

Random_Art 06-13-2011 09:55 PM

Who really care's if it's a chick car? If girls like it, then they're more likely to talk to you if you pull up in it!

Dimman 06-13-2011 10:01 PM

I could live with the Celica name, if it meant an NA 300 hp H6 (50% more power and cylinders) Celica Supra with a bit of re-styling in the very near future.

Also if it is heavier than my desired 2420 lbs (GT5 weight +10%).

If it's in the 2700 lbs range, I feel it will have missed the lightweight target, and the attachment to the AE86 will not really be that strong. So add another 100-200 lbs to that with the H6 and a bit of a stretch front ways to keep the weight centralized, and bang, Celica Supra. Turbo the next model to 450 hp, keep the weight under 3000lbs, voila Supra's back and eating GT-Rs like nothing.

Dreams...

Giving it the name of Celica would mean a sporty model and more money. Most people would be like "Corolla FT86? I'm not going to pay more than $20k for that AND if I have to it better be fully loaded with leather, sunroof.. L-O-A-D-E-D" this is what the majority of buyers are going to think, not us enthusiasts or purists who prefer a light, sports car without those creature comforts.

Calling it a Celica affords them more $$$, than putting the car into the Corolla segment. Same reason why someone would buy a Subaru version for a few grand more. Name and brand. You know the Celica.. CelicaSupra lineage. This could be a door opener for a possible new Supra with a 325hp+ H6/H6T BASED on this chassis to fight the upcoming RX-9 that will be based off the new smaller miata chassis in 2013. You never know, depends how the market receives this car.

I can only imagine the name is being used for future car progression and to bring in the higher dollar.

:laughabove:

That makes absolutely no sense what so ever. Nobody is suggesting to name this a Corolla. They certainly aren't going to name it Celica to charge more money. Most people definitely don't remember the Celica Supra lineage. You're talking about over 30 years ago. People don't spend more money on a name. Not one person will spend a dime more on this car just because it's named Celica.

And for the love of Christ! Stop trying to turn this car into Toyota's attempt at making inroads to a new Supra. If they wanted a new Supra they would just fucking make one. There is absolutely no indication that Toyota is even thinking about it right now. They are constantly evaluating the markets and trying to predict where they will be. If they feel there's market share to be had they will make a Supra and it will be huge and create a lot of buzz. But it will be 3 - 4 years before it ever hit the streets.

Also people spend a few grand more on a Subaru because it comes in a wagon with AWD. There's not much to compare it too. As it stands Subaru doesn't have anything to compare too in the Compact market. I think there's the Fusion and the Venza and those are the only two AWD Wagons I can think of. But when you compare the price of those Cars they are pretty equal.

I guess when you become an executive at Toyota you can tell them what they should/shouldn't do. Until they did exactly what they wanted to do. Which is draw upon the AE86 heritage.

NOT THE TOYOTA CELICA HERITAGE. THIS IS NOT A TOYOTA CELICA.

No matter how badly you want it too be.

Slide 10-31-2011 04:42 PM

will be called "celica" everywhere else in world

So I have been checking domains....

I bought Toyota sprinter... And been checking Toyotacelica.com.... 3 months ago this domain didn't do much other then blank I checked again this morning it links to Toyota.com

Sad news should've come up with a better name.

cassidy0998 10-31-2011 04:51 PM

What in the world are you talking about? That doesn't mean anything.

Ryuu0u 10-31-2011 05:07 PM

This again?

switchlanez 10-31-2011 05:19 PM

Sounds like he bought the Toyota Sprinter domain name in anticipation that Toyota would need to buy it from him. He's been checking the toyotacelica.com domain name which used to load nothing up until recently. Now it redirects to the Toyota homepage which implies Toyota only recently purchased this domain name. Think about it...

Toyota has owned that domain since 1998, their DNS servers just didn't point it to anything for awhile. That could have been an oversight due to a lack of a Celica that was discovered randomly, or it could be so people thinking it'll be called the Celica would go there to see and get to toyota.com instead...

If Toyota owns a trademark on the Toyota Sprinter name (I'm sure they do) and they want that domain name it wouldn't be a purchase. It'd be a C&D and lawsuit and he'll have to give it to them.

iff2mastamatt 10-31-2011 07:42 PM

All of the names aren't very attractive, but FR-S is the only decent one IMO.

Giccin 10-31-2011 10:16 PM

Already a debate + thread on this. Hell it even has a poll. lol

Chokonen888 10-31-2011 10:38 PM

LOL sad news? :iono: Would love it to be called Celica but until Toyota announces it, won't hold my breath.

Allch Chcar 11-01-2011 12:59 AM

Rumor! Thank you for the info.

No, it won't be called the Celica.

This thread should be deleted/locked immediately.

Sure! It's AE86 Levin and Trueno, so don't call it silica. :paddle:

...with 2000GT inspired pillar design and tail lights, and 7th gen Celica design cues. It's inspired by much more than just the AE86...leaving me to believe the FR-S name will be worldwide...but I'd love Sprinter, Levin, or Celica that much more. Not a fan of the whole letter/number names...MR2, MRS, etc.
