I understand many people have tried this without sufficient consistency to say its a hands down resolution. Some it worked, others no change.

I should have added we only have e10 91 octane where I am. Shell vowed is what I usually use

I've mentioned this before but going to say it again...IMO, crickets are not detrimental to the operation of your car. However, running 91 octane on spirited driving (maybe even regular driving) will lower your IAM from knock. I've logged my IAM with Shell 91 before and it can get as low as .50. Now with Ultra94 it rarely goes below .9 on the street (has gone down to .7 at the track).

You're leaving a lot of timing on the table by running sub optimal gas.

IMO ethanol in a car not designed for it is "sub optimal" gas

I can respect that, it's a trade off between two evils but I'd rather take ethanol, which isn't proven to harm the system vs. Knock, which is blatantly bad.

at sea level. At higher altitudes 91 is sufficient. However this is a little off topic...

just had my original pump replaced in june with what I assume to be their most recent and have crickets still. exclusively us shell 91

PMPB 07-17-2014 11:20 PM

I ran Shell 91 exclusively from June 2013 to June 2014 and I had crickets basically the entire time. Not sure how all the others claim to have no crickets. IIRC it's a May 2013 build date.

I'm now doing 1 year on Petro94 exclusively. I can say for certain that that the crickets are RIDICULOUSLY worse. But I know for sure that I had them before.

Are you on stock ECU or aftermarket tune?

Isn't Subaru IAM value range 16?

I'm on aftermarket now but even on stock back in the day, you can hear the tip-in known happen under high load between 2-3K RPM. The stock tune isn't optimized for 91, it's 'safe' because your IAM will drop to adjust timing for the lower octane to counter the knock as best as it can.

Oh well not like I have a choice since I don't drive the car everyday. When the car sits in the garage for a week I would rather have E0 than E5/E10 in the fuel tank. :iono:

We need Chevron 94 E0 here in Ontario. :mad0260:

They're likely never going to eliminate the crickets, I believe they've revised the fuel pump as many times as they are willing to. Just read another thread where user brought car in for updated pump, crickets came back, dealership called tech rep from Subaru and official position from Subaru is now that the noise is normal and there is no further fix.

GotBRZ1691 07-18-2014 10:39 AM

So how many people have gone aftermarket to fix the crickets, and to get more fuel flow for potential upgrades further down the line?

My dealership has a new pump on hand for me but I don't want to leave my car there for a whole day just to have the same problem again, or potentially worse, since my crickets are irregular and are not always present.

I don't think I've read about any aftermarket HPFP's but are there any? Personally the crickets don't bother me, they started at about 200 miles on my car. I expect Subaru's to have some mechanical character. :)

I know Full Blown has one and im sure others do. I might start a thread and ask about it.
