Well you are talking about adding forced induction where most of the professional series don't allow the addition of forced induction with the Pirelli World Challenge Robert Stout Racing FR-S being possibly the lone exception and they couldn't get that TRD supercharger working or competitive at all last season I believe. I race a Spec series, and yes we can't add a vented hood but it is a Spec series which means we run a nearly stock engine so no hood venting is required. It sounds like you are racing in a hp/torque based series where I would think hood venting would be allowed.

The ptuning kit is a great kit, and yes it is damn expensive. There are plenty of cheaper options that I think are perfectly viable for a one hour sprint race though.

yeah that's right, a turbo would produce more power under the curve which isn't taken into account.

What series are you racing in where there are 1 hour races and the difference in price between a couple turbo kits will make or break you budget for the whole season??

puma 03-31-2014 02:08 PM

it won't break the bank but i just thought that it was more expensive than other kits for maybe a little less parts. I just always want to have the most i can with the money that i have, even if it's a 50$ part, if i can buy the same thing for 40$, i'll do. Well not always but you get the point...

wparsons 03-31-2014 02:11 PM

I'm still intrigued, what series allows aftermarket FI but won't allow vented hoods?

puma 03-31-2014 02:28 PM

well every serie has the right to accept certain modifications for a car to be more competitive but to answer your question, we race mostly in the Super Production Challenge, which goes to Calabogie for our 1 hour race for example(which i suppose you know since you are in Canada).

Also, you may be familiar with the CTCC (Canadian Touring car Championship) which also doesn't allow vented hoods or aero elements other than a front lip and a rear wing (Super class only, not in touring)

We want to make our car legal for CTCC also beause we might do a couple of races with them, especially the race that comes in our city.

CTCC accepted Luc Lesage in his Media racing Team to run a turboed FR-S in the Super Touring class. The car was build by Lachute performance.

So if they accepted Lesage i don't see why they would not with us. Also, it was prohibited in SPC but rules have changed and the only important thing is to respect the rule of 11, you can make any changes you want to the engine as long as it is from the same manufacturer and it is from a car that is 12 years old or younger. So i couldn't put a Nissan engine in my car for example.

If you think the ptuning kit is expensive, then I'd advise against 1hr endurance racing.

wparsons 03-31-2014 03:11 PM

That's where I was headed :D

puma 03-31-2014 03:22 PM

we are already racing in that serie, we won the championship last year with our RSX, i am starting to think you guys beleive i am a goof... this serie is meant to keep the cost down for the racers, our entire season cost around 10k if we don't have any crash or major break, it is a very affordable racing serie. Here is our previous car, we were able to make 260whp and 215 ft/lbs with our k24A2 which ended up costing us less 3k for the whole engine setup so yeah, putting 6k on just a turbo kit is expensive compared to what we are used to run

sorry if i am offending some people with my questions or if you guys think i am a troll...

I don't think you are a troll. I understand that just because you are racing doesn't mean you need to buy the most expensive parts and that money saved can be spent on other things.

Yes people seem to forget a lot of racing series allow power modifications to bring parity to different cars, but most other modifications are pretty basic. RSR was able to add the "TRD" supercharger to their car to compete in the Continental series in the US. Not that it has done them much good since they have had tons of issues.

I really like the PTuning kit and it was first on my list, but I just couldn't justify the price. You are paying more than any other kit and it doesn't include a header, just an overpipe adapter. Of course you may be able to get a sponsorship to get the costs down a bit and I believe they aren't too far from you.

The only part I'm not a fan of is the electric scavenge pump, you can get the Subaru mechanical one for pretty cheap and it just needs an adapter plate to make it work with any turbo setup (that's what AVO did...)

puma 03-31-2014 03:54 PM

there you go, that's what i am talking about, plus, it is weird to say but the Ptuning kit makes too much power, i need to keep the power lower in order to keep the weight down. (serie's rules)

Got anymore info on those scavenge pump? Where can they be purchased? One alternative would be to build my own turbo kit with a V-mount setup but the supercharger isn't out of the equation yet, lower power output, reliable, easy to install, upgradable with a different pulley and produces less underhood temperature.

still not sure.

If you can fabricate, just make your own kit. It's not rocket science... Spend the cash you saved on Inconel heatshields and a built short motor with bearing clearances and ring gaps suitable for track racing.
