TRD Exhaust owner here. Mine was a dealer installed part that came with the car. A TRD drop-in filter was also included (the drop-in is definitely worth the money $70).
The exhaust is very nice sounding and definitely mature (the above poster who said it hadn't probably spent much time with one IRL). Here are specifics (and not just internet hate): 1. Start the car, high idle - it's burbly and louder than stock, 2. About 30 seconds later the engine will move to low-idle and it's much quieter (almost stock sounding, just deeper). 3. On the street it's aggressive sounding, but not high pitched or raspy whatsover. 4. At WOT it shouts (not screams). Once again, in no part of the rev range is it high-pitched AT ALL. Did the dude above just compare the sound of a 5.7L engine to a 2.0L, really? Why even post? On my TRD exhaust there is no rasp, no drone, it's deep but not overly loud. Lastly, I love how well the "D" shaped tips integrate with the rear diffuser, OEM+. No other exhaust does this. Yes it's pricey when compared to some other aftermarket exhausts, but its OEM, and the dealer will cover it if they install it. You should be able to get one for about $800. |

If you can get a decent price from the dealer, and like the design of the tips, the TRD cat back is good quality and sounds nice. If you want more sound and growl from it, modify more of the exhaust system, which I recommend anyways, as actual horsepower gains can be found by replacing the restrictive cat in the front pipe. I have a Perrin overpipe/frontpipe leading to my TRD catback. It sounds awesome :) |
I went with the TRD catback mainly because I wasn't sure of my mod path yet. Figured I'd stick with the warranty path for a minute. Still, I think it sounds great, and the D tips look pure OEM. Also, a very mature exhaust. Waiting on someone to throw some UEL headers on there with it, bet it will sound good. That's what I'll do if I stick to NA.
FWIW, my dealer sold me mine for $999 installed. |
If you lived in Canada I would buy it from ya. But the freight from the USA would be a killer.

I was worried the day after I installed my TRD exhaust. It was stupid loud. I had to crank the radio up really high just to hear anytihng. After a week or so, it started getting quieter. It's to the point now where I can say it's moderately louder than the stock, but only enough to say "slightly modified car!" to onlookers, but not enough to give you the concert-migraine.

I've only found front pipe + TRD. If you can make a video of your Borla + TRD, that would be perfect. Is it EUL or EL? |
UEL. I can even do Borla UEL + PLM over pipe, but I highly doubt you'd be able to detect any differences just because of that little over pipe. It'll have to wait another month though.

when the police pulled me over, the first thing he said was "your exhaust is pretty loud" no its really not... I had kept saying it is oem, and a factory option. Its 50 state legal carb legal bla bla bla its TRD and so on. He then kept saying "is it" "is it" cuz I owned a subaru brz.... I didnt want to explain the whole twin car thing so I just said yes lol. but its really not that loud. Its the perfect sounding system for a quiet exhaust.
