imo....the Matrix looks like a van. Like the XRS (2005 body style), the motor is the only thing worth notating about it. Wrong chassis, wrong dimensions for anything to do with "cool" looking or being track worthy. I don't think a New "car" can equate to the buzz that a New "company" produces, so that could be a driving force behind the creation of a whole entity. At the time of Scion's creation, no one was buzzing about a RWD 2+2 coupe. Then came along the Gen Coupe to sorta inject something into that (but poor performance imo), and then all of a sudden everyone is screaming for an affordable RWD 2+2 coupe sports car. |
The probable reason why the FT86 is going to be a SCION in NA and not a Toyota is that the FT86 is an unproven design with unknown reliability.
JD Power's 2011 Vehicle Dependability Study Toyota is ranked #5 - 122 Scion is ranked #22 - 166 problems per 100 vehicles Lincoln, Lexus , Jaguar, Porsche, Toyota are the Top 5 in order. http://www.autoblog.com/2011/03/17/j...ncoln-best-b/2 |

As for buzz over a new company, I guess you can't really compare anything to it equally so yeah I guess thats a good point. I still don't think it was the greatest idea they've ever had over at TMC but what do I know about running the best selling car company in the world... |

an yeah it's possible they arent sure how the ft-86 will do in the US, if successful they may scrap it from Scion and put it in Toyota...heck they may even scrap scion completely. |

Does Subaru have anything equivalent to a Prius in it's line up? |

If they wanted to build a hybrid then Toyota's HSD would be logical. If they wanted to sell a hybrid they could just rebadge a Toyota. The only current Hybrid system that allows for a manual gearbox is Honda's IMA and while it is cheaper and allows for a manual gearbox, it's gotten some ire for being less efficient than HSD. |
I'm pretty sure IMA not being as efficient has more to do with the gas engine itself, seeing that Toyota goes Atkinson on their hybrids as well as downsizing the engine, while Honda only bothers to downsize. Not to mention they seem pretty behind on developing newer valve technology and direct injection. A full parallel hybrid allows for greater regeneration under breaking, and a slightly smaller gas engine, but at highway cruising power you can't really go much below 1.3 liters, which is around what Civic/Prius use.
