As for Scion being created to tap into the younger demographics... Coulda just built a cool fuckin' car. Pretty sure its a lot cheaper than starting up a whole company.

I mean, I fit perfectly into the Scion "demographic" being 22 years old, and I honestly cringe when I see a Scion commercial / video. Granted there are always outliers but I don't feel Scion was justly created.

Considering they did an amazing job with the first generation Matrix I don't think Scion was needed. I know more people in their mid 20's driving in first gen Matrixes (Matrices?) than I do who drive a Scion. Just sayin' they coulda just built a couple cars under Toyota to capture the younger peeps attention.

I don't think theres anything wrong with one "Brand" carrying a wide variety of products that cater to a wide variety of audiences. I'm pretty sure thats how a company starts off. And last time I checked Hyundai / Kia were doing pretty damn good with the whole line up under one badge.

imo....the Matrix looks like a van. Like the XRS (2005 body style), the motor is the only thing worth notating about it. Wrong chassis, wrong dimensions for anything to do with "cool" looking or being track worthy.

I don't think a New "car" can equate to the buzz that a New "company" produces, so that could be a driving force behind the creation of a whole entity. At the time of Scion's creation, no one was buzzing about a RWD 2+2 coupe. Then came along the Gen Coupe to sorta inject something into that (but poor performance imo), and then all of a sudden everyone is screaming for an affordable RWD 2+2 coupe sports car.

The probable reason why the FT86 is going to be a SCION in NA and not a Toyota is that the FT86 is an unproven design with unknown reliability.

JD Power's 2011 Vehicle Dependability Study

Toyota is ranked #5 - 122
Scion is ranked #22 - 166 problems per 100 vehicles

Lincoln, Lexus , Jaguar, Porsche, Toyota are the Top 5 in order.

A van? I'm a little butt hurt over that comment lol. I really enjoy the 03/04 styling. 05 Went totally wrong, but they don't look like a van to me at all. The only angle I don't thoroughly enjoy is the back end, but thats like 90% of the cars on the market today, all the back ends look horrible to me lol.

As for buzz over a new company, I guess you can't really compare anything to it equally so yeah I guess thats a good point. I still don't think it was the greatest idea they've ever had over at TMC but what do I know about running the best selling car company in the world...

I mean, how original can you be with making a car nowadays?--everything has 4 wheels, some doors, a windshield, must obey pedestrian safety standards, have similar power and features to be competitive and reasonably priced.

Current Sonata and Accent look much more exciting. I'd much rather have one of those over the Accord or Camry and Civic or Corolla. Take the badges off and take everything into consideration, it's easy to see the appeal of the Hyundai imo.

Hyundai has made some gutsy moves in the recent years and deserves the recognition.

the accent maybe an original design but everything else is a rip off of a Honda/Acura or a Toyota, ESPECIALLY Lexus. Dear god the, Equus is a total LS wannabe and the Sonata is like a mutated TSX from the back. They want to beat Toyota/Lexus by being what Toyota/Lexus is/was high quality for lower price. I mean yes Hyundai isn't the worst anymore but im sorry you will never be in the same tier as Lexus/BMW/Mercedes i consider them toyota/honda level.

an yeah it's possible they arent sure how the ft-86 will do in the US, if successful they may scrap it from Scion and put it in Toyota...heck they may even scrap scion completely.

"More intriguingly is word that Scion will bring its own version of the FT-86 to the Big Apple's auto show, although don't expect a production version – this will be yet another concept...."

^this
anyhow, its just a rumor.

I'm going to passionately disagree here. Three letters: WRX. Must've dropped the average age of Subaru buyers by like 20 years.

Does Subaru have anything equivalent to a Prius in it's line up?

Not really, they're more like Mazda except without the RWD sports cars and instead have their AWD, rally inspired, sports cars :respekt:. Subaru doesn't even sell a hybrid electric car.

Wasn't there a rumour that they would be using some of Toyota's Hybrid Synergy Drive, as kind of a 'trade' for the FT86 work?

My point exactly....not much of a reputation for making "boring" commuter cars to begin with.

I don't know :iono: that sounds familiar.

If they wanted to build a hybrid then Toyota's HSD would be logical. If they wanted to sell a hybrid they could just rebadge a Toyota. The only current Hybrid system that allows for a manual gearbox is Honda's IMA and while it is cheaper and allows for a manual gearbox, it's gotten some ire for being less efficient than HSD.

serialk11r 03-24-2011 06:32 PM

I'm pretty sure IMA not being as efficient has more to do with the gas engine itself, seeing that Toyota goes Atkinson on their hybrids as well as downsizing the engine, while Honda only bothers to downsize. Not to mention they seem pretty behind on developing newer valve technology and direct injection. A full parallel hybrid allows for greater regeneration under breaking, and a slightly smaller gas engine, but at highway cruising power you can't really go much below 1.3 liters, which is around what Civic/Prius use.
