As long as you got a good exhuast note for those higher rev starts, its not that bad and a whole lot of fun.

This is my point about these engines. This is all fun and good on a track where you can rev to your hearts desire but on regular roads where we all drive around 2500rpms to 4500 rpms these engines suck ass IMO and they feel like you're beating the crap out of them just to go somewhere. Most people will never get to rev to those high numbers unless they hit a track or else on the streets it'll sound like your racing from one stop light to the next. The only upside from these 2.0 liters in my experience is MPG.

Toyota said the engine is free revving, but they never say that it's high end torque or something like that. There was once, people driving 50-100hp, with 100 lb ft or torque or else, they still can make it, why can't you?
Why don't see do some research on Boxer engine?

cloud9 03-01-2011 11:12 AM

They should rename this from FT-86 to FTW-∞

WhatIs86For 03-01-2011 11:18 AM

Im not asking for spec of engine but can i know "when" it will be released?

also the weight

Have you ever driven a turbo diesel? I think that's the kind of engine you want. Luckily (IMO), seems like Toyota doesn't want this kind of engine in this car.
Even though turbo diesels have improved a lot, they don't give the same feeling as a N/A-free revving-low torque-petrol engine

^ I also want to know the weight!!! One of the most important figures for me...

I have, and soon as I got out of the twisties and onto the straight, I fell asleep. Going to need boost to tickle my fancy. Torque gives you the "put you back in the seat" feeling. Hence why I'm not that happy about the N/A 2.0L boxer. Never had been since the first mention of it's power plant.

What he was getting at though was from a daily driver standpoint. In order to feel any performance from the car, you are going to have to push in the high rpms to feel that inspiration. Doing that on the streets makes you look like a ricer running around reving his engine screaming how you have 8k or so rpms. Torque'er cars give you that performance inspiration without causing unwanted attention to yourself.

Now for the LOOOONG wait until the Tokyo autoshow (Dec) for the full production version. This is going to be a very long "night before Christmas".

I understand what your saying, but the odd thing is at highway speeds, my car makes less noise than lower speeds. Between 4700-5000rpms she really smoothes out and doesn't come close to being as loud as any other car with an aftermarket exhaust. I sit right at the beginning of my powerband and the engine loves it. Makes passing other cars very easy. Below 4700rpms, its all exhaust note... Over 5300, the ITB's sing. But everyone one has their level of comfort needed. What your saying is a valid point I can admit, but some people love that work to push a car. Are you going faster, no... but some how in your mind you kinda feel like it. That's what makes a car sporty to me, that feeling it gives you.

FT-86GOD 03-01-2011 12:00 PM

Dont bite my head of... But yamaha said to have had a fair bit to do with the head design with the supra 1JZ-GTE and the 2JZ-GTE possibly as well as a few other bit and pieces... If yamaha r having a hand in this box 2litre i would hope its gonna be fun across the whole rpm range....

And if it gets a turbo strapped to it.... Hahaha cant wait to find out......

Archer256 03-01-2011 12:28 PM

If Yamaha isnt touching the boxer, then I'm hoping they're makin a new engine for next gen IS's and/or next coupe from lexus.

New GR series? It's good, but if Yamaha can help making the engine looks more pleasure to eyes.:bellyroll::bellyroll:

Toyota announced force inductions and direct injection( Lexus has it for years), will make it way to Toyota's lineup. I'm hoping that Lexus vehicles will also receive force induction (for both fuel economy and performance).
Yamaha will probably help developing engine for Lexus cars, but I hope it's a V8. JMHO.

tripjammer 03-01-2011 12:49 PM

Ok the S2000 was a bad ass car...and it had a 2.0 liter NA engine...Maybe just maybe this boxer 2.0 liter NA engine will have more than 200HP...maybe 250HP...if it is direct injected...

i guess what i'm going off is the K20Z3 out of the Civic Si. it's not a torque monster, but has 130+ lb ft across almost all of the rev range. it moves along just fine. also, with the FT being lighter, it requires less torque to move.

MR2 Spyders are quite light and when driving them, they never really seem to be bogged down at lower RPMs.

kiya 03-01-2011 01:44 PM

Why has nobody mentioned that in the press release it states the car is coming out in Europe with NO mention of America?

Right, but with past press releases which come directly from the manufacturer they at least mention something about "also coming to North America.."

Because America sucks and we should all move to Europe.

philip808 03-01-2011 02:56 PM

meh..where'd all these people come from??

This isn't going to be a supercar folks..it's not going to be any faster than my wife's Rav 4..it's not going to do 13 sec 1/4's, sub 6 sec. 60's, or 1.x g's..if your "driver experience" includes those above, this is not the car for you. If you enjoy balance, controlability, and confidence inspiring, then you might get a little what this car is meant for. Wishcasting just isn't going to make it so.

C-Bone 03-01-2011 03:42 PM

Haha I'm loving the debates... I think the car looks good, mean looking. And yes I also think it looks more like a concept than the original but I guess we'll see. I'm sure it'll be N/A but I'd be supprised if they don't make a Turbo version down the line (like G-Sports or something); I'm really hoping for one anyways, and I'm not saying the car is gonna need it to make it good but I just would like to have one for personal preferance

Well, at least that shows that Toyota realizes that the big big big reason the AE86 was such a popular cult classic was because of the 4A-GE. The sleak sexy 80's styling is just a bonus:wub:

Gotta chuckle at all these powerheads wanting gobs amounts of low-end torque, a turbo, and 350+bhp in order to 'like the car'. For you guys, I sincerely hope (cause I'll be excited too!) that the new sports car to come out of Toyota is a Supra successor.

For the rest of us, and especially the fanbase they've badly teased with this car (AE86 fans), we want something as close to the 4A-GE as possible by today's emissions and safety standards. I DD'd my AE86 for 5 years and the only time it sucked was on long interstate trips (sup gearing), where it was staying steady at ~5k RPM at ~70ish MPH.

Cheers.

NESW20 03-01-2011 05:12 PM

 okay, having the video really brings it to life. the static pictures don't do the car justice. there are still a couple minor stylistic changes i'd like to see, but overall, to you, Toyota!

toper 03-01-2011 05:16 PM

people argue too much about each body panel but if you see this is in person and moving i bet you'll have a new impression.. For me it still maintained it;s overall look from the 1st conscept and is still a winner compared to cars that are out today. This is really a work of art. I hope actual performance won't disappoint :)

Abflug 03-01-2011 05:17 PM

thank you!

but toyota please remove that super ugly rear-wing of the FT-86!

The wing is there so it can be replaced using the current mounting holes.
Toyota said they wanted to tap into the lucrative aftermarket business, and this is a good example.

DrunkenMime 03-01-2011 05:44 PM

this car is way to over decorated...it reminds me of when you see a honda accord with a big wing, reflectors, fake fender vents, stickers, hubcaps, fur dash cover, fake leather steering wheel wrap, and 6 tail pipes, but only one of them actually functions. They need to get rid of the lame ass wing, the fender "vents" the stupid scoops on the back of the rear quarter panels to start....then maybe we'll have something decent to look at.

the first concept was FAR better looking....I hate the RX8 fender "bump/bulges"....they seem out of place and the the profile looks like a baseball cap with a sleek front end and a bulbous canopy....I'll have to see more of it to see what they were thinking with this car...

You missed my edit above your post, but I have a different opinion on the RX8....lol. I just hope the 86 has more going for it than the RX8. I am not much of a low torque-high reving guy.

I love high revving :D fd might have v8s but how many have v8s in d1?
The whole world isn't America ;)
And another thing is, yes the rx8 is slightly slowest than a mps3 in a straight line, but since it's not actually a drag car who really cares? It whoops it by seconds around tracks with a same driver. And that's stock, add a supercharger/turbo so both are same aspirated.. Well that's a different story

You obviously have no clue what a gearbox does..
If this thing revs to let's say 8500 you cat compare it to a car that revs to let's say 6.. Yet they will both have top speed of around 100km/h in 2nd..
And mate this isn't a 350 big block revving to 5000 redline throug a 4speed top loader ;) 6 speed gearbox and a high redline = awesome fun (again il compare a rotary to this, iv never had problems accelerating.)

The car is awesome...and if it does not have a turbo...so be it... but if it is only 200HP NA...then it will sell no more than low to mid 20K price. Which is a good deal.

If Hyundai can release a Genesis turbo from the low to mid 20K range...then Toyota\Scion can do the same (With a 2.0 liter boxer turbo version) but maybe close to the 30K range.

If nissan can sell the base 370Z for less than $30K...then Toyota\Scion can sell a loaded FT86 for around that price too..

70NYD 03-01-2011 05:58 PM

Oh I just read the rest of these comments. Sounds like there are some members here that really want a v6 or a v8.. This is the wrong car for you m8 sorry
Also my daily is a rx8 (obviously) and I have absolutely no problems passing anyone or going up hills. Hell I even beat v8s of the line, but that's cus I'm a awesome driver :p

bigbcraig 03-01-2011 06:00 PM

I'm a little disappointed by the rear end.

I really liked how the original concept had a little bit of notchback in the trunk, made it seem slimmer / lighter. I also hope there's a proper trunk and not a hatchback for security reasons, but we'll see.

AIRMAX 03-01-2011 06:49 PM

Its a crying shame if Toyota releases this as a Scion in the States...... if anything the Toyota brand needs a boost.... Scion needs another car, like a newer more slick tC in the cards....not a FT-86.

TwiBlueG35 03-01-2011 07:08 PM

I think this is a right move from Toyota that they finally made a sporty looking car that is for everyone. Unlike some super cars that you can only see them in pictures or be jealous when you see one on the street. And this FT-86 concept II looks very aggressive, wish the production version looks close to this one.

Sorry, excuse me?
"Sporty Looking"? Assuming Toyota / Subaru do what they set out to do this car will not just be "Sporty Looking" and it will most definitely NOT be for everyone.

But thats assuming Toyota / Subaru do what they say they are going to do.

If not, you win :(

Sort of -- thinking about it many people who are looking for a nice looking daily driver shouldn't look at the FT (imo) Unless they want a RWD daily driver of awesomeness, then come all!
