That's cool...I've always wanted to do a project car like that but don't have anywhere I can work on it or store it while working on it.

What's wrong with being nice?! :(
If I had that car, I'd be curious to look for owner or more photos/info too.

nothing at all. i just found it hilarious to read such a polite comment about this car thats all. lol

I've started with worse before and ended up with a pretty sweet carat the end of it all!
Dude obviously understands what he is getting into and doesn't seem to be some jackass that thinks he just got a bargain.
For a bunch of guys that refuse to take their car to dealers because everybody is better then that and preach the whole "doing my own work is half the fun" concept you should get where he is coming from on this.
Now...if it was some fool teenager that came on here and asked "what do you think I need to do and I have $500 to work with" I would probably be right there with all the hecklers but the guy just wondered if there was any history.

OP I will buck the trend and say nice find and please keep those of us that are interested updated on your progress.

There are plenty of front engine RWD coupes made by Toyota and Subaru that don't have mismatched body panels and hacked up fenders. What was special about this car that you bought it specifically?

Its all about perspective and some people don't plan on selling there car also.

I add mods to my cars too. Usually stuff you can't see like better suspension components, better sound system, etc. I get that. If you live with the car day in and out and plan on driving it for awhile it's worth it to you.

I am not talking about that though. I am talking about the original owner of this car for example who spent a lot of money and time actually lowering the resale value of his car. And there are lots of them for sale around here and other classifieds who bought the car, spent $10K+ with tons of mods like the ones on this car, and then find themselves selling the car in 1-2 years for a huge loss.

I bet if you look in the for sale area here you will see what I am talking about. Dudes that put $10-20K into their car that cost $25-30K new and are selling it for about what they paid and taking a loss on that $10-20K. And this is not specific to the FT86 platform at all, I see people doing this crap to brand new $30-40K STI's, WRX's, GTI, Focus ST, Genesis Coupe, etc. All the time..

Then suppose instead that I buy a $25K car, put a bunch of garbage on it that ruins it and then find myself lucky to sell it for $10K. Completely ignoring my sunk costs spent on the car earlier, in real dollar terms at the moment I'm looking for another car, I have $5K less to work with because I fucked up the car's resale value with my stupid body hacks, wing and turbo.

If you like that shit and never plan to sell it, do whatever makes you happy. But even the people who think they'll never sell their cars eventually decide they want something else and are too often shocked at how little they've made the car worth.

Before I bought the BRZ, I was considering trying to find a used Dodge Magnum SRT, the station wagon with the big hemi. At that time, the SRTs were going for $20K to $25K. I came across one that had 14K miles on it and watched over a period of months as the guy initially listed it at $25K, then dropped it to $20K, then $15K, then finally bottomed out at $11K and wouldn't go any lower. And he still couldn't sell the damned thing. Why? Because he had put a ridiculous neon green paint job on it, huge rims and lambo doors. Nobody wanted that shit because it would cost more than it was worth to fix it.

I'm sure when he did that, he thought he would keep it forever. Then he outgrew it. Sadly, that car will probably end up in the crusher long before it should.

This guy gets it.

Im sure people who usually do these type of mods know that they are ruining resale value they simple dont care. They either have the cash flow so money is no issue or are young with no real responsibilities. Would I never do rocket bunny or anything that crazy hell no.

Yep! It is usually the older people with bigger debt loads that worry about resale value. For many out there that just isn't a factor. They are probably as confused about why we think resale is important as we are for why they just don't care.

No I don't think he is too far off. There are plenty of morons that think that mods actually increase the value as well of course but the majority know what they are doing.

The FRS/BRZ is the only collaboration between the two. I'm saying that there are plenty of unmolested cars to choose from, so I'm curious as to why you picked one that you knew would require a lot of work to get right again.

They care when they try to trade in the car and get a lowball trade value from the dealer. Then they get all butt-hurt about that and list it on Craigslist or in the classified section of this board with comments like, "I know what it's worth so don't waste my time with lowball offers." Then they don't understand why they can't sell the car.

UNTIL it's time to sell it.

Oh, and about this picture:

Did Mardi Gras explode in that car? Shouldn't it have beads hanging from the mirror? I hope that guy drove that thing around wearing a colorful and ridiculous costume.

We see the ones on Craigslist, etc that don't get it but like this forum what we don't see are the tens of thousands of guys that just take the lose and walk away happy. They sell/trade with no fanfare or whining so they just don't get noticed.

And that interior is a tad on the garish side. Won First for something though so somebody liked it.

No problem. I just used my internet hunting knowledge. lol
First, I google image searched the first photo on your post and found the article it was in, then I looked up the event it was taken in. Assuming there must be a photo of it from the event and a friend that would tag the owner, I looked it up on instagram and found exactly that. :D

Had an RS1. By the time he is done with it I don't think it will qualify for the designation anymore. I am not normally a member of the "oh god why did you do that to your car" camp but why get a special edition and then chop it up until it is no longer a special edition?

Thehermdawg 04-22-2015 08:52 PM

He's been at a couple of meets here in San Diego, including our local 86 meet. Didn't realize that both cars were owned by the same guy. Honestly, I don't understand his reasoning for the black fenders. It looks so weird and with yellow wheels its so over the top.

Vroomin86 04-22-2015 09:06 PM

@Choco great job, inspector gadget would be proud lol.. To OP, get this puppy back on the road ASAP and definitely make a restore thread to shut a few people up. Especially once you've piled together your total OUT of pocket expenses.

That's what I'm saying. I'm all for doing whatever you want to your car, but on a special edition, I'd leave everything exterior and interior stock. Go wild with chassis and engine mods

I'm thinking he just hasn't been able to get them paint matched yet.

There is a blue series that someone rocket bunnied. He even changed some exclusive "blue interior" pieces and sold them on facebook.
