I have had this problem since two days after I got my car and I have the stock exhaust. On both sides of me are retired seniors who don't like me much because I don't mow my lawn often enough for them and don't spend outrageous amounts of time doing yard work to keep the place pretty. They have both called the cops several times each due to my excessively loud exhaust at 5:45am when I leave for work. Last week I asked a local PO to sit at the end of the driveway when I started the car in the morning and he said it's too loud and I need to do something soon or they will pull my registration. I am at my wits end :( If I end up having to get rid of the car because of them I will be pissed and will make sure to make their lives hell.

I think next time the closer one starts his 69 GTO with dual glasspacks I will complain. I know it won't do any good though because the old boy network here is unbeatable but it will make me feel better.

Apparently she is some really old lady who has nothing better to do than to stir up shit. She was also the one who called the cops when we had our house warming party as well. The lady next to us whose husband has a motorcycle and a mustang said she has called on them dozens of times and that they saw her in our yard once looking at my car....Sounds like I should be the one calling the cops on her. Anyway I decided to go with the Q300 as I prefer to keep the peace and respect my other neighbors even if I don't her. Thanks for all of your input, and for your help with the cold start issues Foobar

Gotta love old people. I live in Hyde Park and I was worried about the noise since the houses are so close together, but then again people can deal for the few minutes before I leave for work.

If your car is 100% stock, and it's legally sold and plated in your area they can't do anything about it.

A cop that didn't even bother to check that the car is 100% stock and is threatening to pull plates/registration needs to give their head a shake too.

It would be a very quick conversation if you can prove with documentation that the car is totally stock.

This.... There isn't shit they can do if your car is stock. That's just insane they're bitching about a stock frs being too loud.

gravitylover 01-01-2015 12:48 PM

Heheh documentation. I think I'm just going to tell the cop to get on his knees and check it out for himself

See where I said "old boy network?" These guys have been here forever, one was born here and never left and his relative of some sort is a Captain. I told him (the PO) it was stock but that wasn't good enough apparently. They will be here tomorrow or Saturday morning with a sound meter of some sort and I'm supposed to wait for them before I leave for work, told them that wasn't going to work because I have to be there to open and I WON'T work around their schedule for something as bogus as this. I should hear from them this afternoon what their plan is.

You would think a 48 year old guy wouldn't have problems like this. I don't rev a car when it's cold ever. I start it and roll out of the driveway a few seconds after that and put it right into 2nd gear as I go by the neighbors house because it's downhill. I do stop at the corner because there's a stop sign so have to get off in 1st there but so does everybody else. Apparently the guy down the street that brings home the F350 diesel work truck is immune at 4:30am...

cjd 01-01-2015 01:02 PM

Be sure they properly follow the distance portion of the law... +3dB every time you halve distance. At 2" I'm sure it's too loud...

WNDSRFR 01-01-2015 01:29 PM

Tell the cop to F.O. There's no way a stock FR-S is too loud. And report to his supervisor that he is harassing you. I'm guessing you're fairly young and they are just fuking with you because they think they can get away with it.

gravitylover 01-01-2015 01:39 PM

^ 48 so not young and the supervisor (Captain) is family of one of the guys complaining.

I plan to tell him to stand by the side of the house closest to the driveway and again on the front steps of the one I have to drive past. No, there's no option to go a different way because it's a one way street.

drewbot 01-01-2015 02:29 PM

My TRD in the winter shakes windows. So just douche neighbors

If you treat the cop like a ****, be prepared for what you get in return...

Be prepared, show them the car is 100% stock and direct them to the local dealership or Toyota US to deal with it. If the government allows the car to be sold in your area, it's clearly legal. I would also get in touch with Toyota US to get yourself prepared for it.

If they try to pull your plates or registration and you have documentation, the case will get dropped before it sees a judge. If the cop tries again, they'll lose again. Their boss will get sick of it and put an end to it.

You could also proactively go to the police station to talk to the supervisor and show them the proof that the car is 100% stock. For all you know, that might end it right there.

KenTK808 01-01-2015 06:28 PM

Loud is a subjective quality. You shouldn't have to bend to that grouchy ladies wishes. Tell her to turn her hearing aid down, or move to a different neighborhood. I'm sure there is a law against abusing 911 calls.

wparsons 01-01-2015 06:31 PM

I highly doubt they're calling 911 to report this stuff...

While I wish I could say that was true, you'd be surprised what people actually do call 911 for.

On second thought I think you should kill them with kindness. Bake them a ton of cookies and brownies. How can you get mad at the nice guy across the street that always bakes you shit?

Or bake her some "loaded" brownies! That would cure her grouchiness. Don't know about her munchies though.:)

I found the tune file I sent you, looks like the idle tables were already lowered to 1400. You've got everything I know of to minimize cold start noise without compromising anything. Sorry I can't be of more help!

re: mine is a BRZ not FRS but that shouldn't matter.

I got the phone call while we were eating dinner and they want me to take the day off from work tomorrow so they can come to the house and do the sound check then I can bring the car into the pd maintenance garage so they can put it on the lift to confirm that it's stock. I said that's unacceptable and I need to be at work 60 miles away by 9am but my needs are apparently meaningless in this situation, it's all about the old folks making the complaints and I need to accommodate them. Not gonna happen. I called the boss but he's out of town until Sunday so if I'm not there we will have a dozen employees standing on the sidewalk and the store will be closed. Wonder how this is going to end up...

Why is it that retired people with nothing better to do seem to run the show? Oh and before anyone asks, no my wife can't take care of it because we are having a new septic tank installed tomorrow so she has to be home.

gravitylover 01-01-2015 09:41 PM

Ha. As I hit submit the capt called and I can take care of this on Tuesday, my next weekday off when their garage is open. Frustrating but better than the alternative.

OmarGC 01-01-2015 10:25 PM

I roll up old wrx floor mats into a cylinder/cone shape and shove them into my exhaust and pull them out once im outside my neighborhood.

KenTK808 01-01-2015 11:16 PM

That's unreal....but my baked goods suggestion still stands as an alternative

Pekingduck 01-01-2015 11:50 PM

Just leave it, you have no law for noise pollution. I wish the laws in California are that relax. As for you neighbor Even if you make car less noisy the neighbor won't notice because the neighbor focus on your car.

cjd 01-02-2015 12:38 AM

Get a lawyer. Dont cancel or anything unless a lawyer advises such, but you need representation. How are they going to know it's stock? They'll possibly have to start taking panels off. And you've received no ticket at this point I presume? I'd at least get a clear idea what they're after and where this will go when it turns out the setup is stock.

I've had passive aggressive spats with neighbors before, they're horrible. Made me hate that house for no good reason (they divorced and subsequwntly abandoned thwir house... But that bad feeling didn't leave.)

Stay calm. Good luck.

Your story gets more fanciful every time you make a new post. Just saying.

Quentin 01-02-2015 07:43 PM

My wife says my FR-S with TRD exhaust wakes our toddler. Oh well, it had the TRD exhaust from the beginning so I can't swap back to "stock".

You know those &%@#$ Harley riders who try to rev their engines as loud as they can driving though residential neighborhoods? They bought the Harley and ride it that way because they want to be noticed. Your neighbor probably thought you bought your exhaust because you wanted to be noticed.

That's whatever I think when I hear someone with an obnoxiously loud exhaust.

I wonder if the cops would of pulled him over if he was on a Harley? Kinda fucked up how they can be twice as loud but we can't! Get a turbo and put a muffler on it. Turbos will quiet down the exhaust a lot. Not saying you don't already know that.

I normally leave at 430 am and sometimes 3am

Jaden 01-03-2015 01:50 PM

I would straight up call bs on that cop

I would cite the cincinatti ordinance that requires it to be no more than 95 decibals measured from 20 feet only allowing for a $25 dollar fine if it does on the first offense...

If you can I would suggest taking it to a certifying authority and getting a test result showing that it is within the allowed maximum.

Sugi 01-03-2015 02:15 PM

This is my opinion and i'm in no way telling you what to do. I'm not sure of the NY vehicle codes, but in CA there are laws protecting citizens against unlawful detentions. Everyone here is telling you just to prove that your car is stock, that it's under a certain Db, blah blah blah. I would start looking at the class of crime they are trying to get you for (infraction or misdemeanor) and depending on the crime and class, if they even have PC (probable cause) to continue to detain you or demand that you have to do something. If you were not given a cite at the time of incident, which it doesn't sound like you did then more than likely they are not following their dept. policies and procedures. Good law enforcement officers are there to help people and educate about the law. Not to harass and make their own rules and unfortunately some lose sight of that.

What is this, mother Russia? Those guys can go pound sand, do you know a lawyer? This is bordering on police harassment and profiling. A quick letter from a lawyer will have them leaving you alone. You haven't violated any laws, the police are overstepping their bounds here.

cdrazic93 01-03-2015 04:52 PM

ohhh man im subscribing to this old fart of a thread

CruiseZen 01-03-2015 05:45 PM

There are iPhone apps that will measure decibels. You could use one to get an approximation of how loud you are. There's no way you will be over 90 decibels from 20 feet away if you are totally oem.

shiumai 01-03-2015 08:16 PM

I leave for work at 5:15am and the cold start is pretty loud (all i have is the nameless axle-back). i turn on my car just before i open the garage door, put it in gear to lower the RPMs, then idle out of the garage. putting it in gear definitely helps quieten it.
