42 and enjoying the car now that it has a turbo

OICU812 07-14-2014 12:15 AM

42, owned several vehicles, several sports cars really enjoy this car the most of all I've owned.

paros28 07-14-2014 08:38 PM

52. I'm happy with the car the way it was designed and I'm keeping it stock.

Yes, I remember the 80's. I was driving an 84 Supra. Journey was on the radio...

"Highway run
Into the midnight sun
Wheels go round and round..."

jvincent 07-14-2014 08:54 PM

48 here.

Mods are: OFT, Raceseng shifter knob, Whiteline differential and rear crossmember bushings.

Just got my new wheels and tires (Enkei PF01 / Hankook V12 evo2) that will go on after the next track day.

Just curious what you all have done your twin to make it your own.
Me? TRD springs, armrest and weather-tech floormats. I don't plan to mod mine in excess, eventually add Open flash tune and header. I still own my Integra type R clone for track days and weekend abusing (endless money-pit). There's not much left stock on that car.

So far I absolutely enjoy my FR-S, Great balance, and wonderfully inadequate tires make for a lot of sideways fun.:burnrubber:

40's? I wish. I turned 58 in March.

What I remember most about the 80's was the music was crap.

FastWhite 07-14-2014 10:06 PM

Do you still remember Elvis from the waist up on the Ed Sullivan show? Bonanza, Have Gun-Will Travel.

I trust the Cosworth name and am not looking to overstress what is already a high strung engine IMO. Would like more power but if it maintains a semblance of reliability 220hp would be fine. Eliminating the torque dead spot would be worth the price of admission personally. Affordability would be nice too. I don't want to grenade this engine or change it's character either. Back on topic, THIS would be a mod I'd consider.

When you reach 600whp, then you would be reaching the limits to stressing the engine. ;)

Wow. Well I only want about 50hp for this to be totally sublime. I need the 50hp not the car which speaks volumes to how good the car is.

40 here. Using mine for daily driving for work. I'm keeping it stock other than wanting a rear spoiler and some fog lights. My weekend car is a '73 bug with a 2276 in it. Hmmm. I guess I'm all boxer motors now.

nzer 07-15-2014 07:19 AM

Got my car when I was 44. Am 45 now.

Loved the 80s.

I'm a TRD addict so TRD EVERYTHING on my car.

Nope, The Cure, the Breakfast Club, Eddie Murphy standup act, and Batman with Michael Keaton.

My family think it's a "mid life crisis" car after driving a 4runner for 15 years.
My friends are secretly jealous of it because they're all driving SUVs or minivans to haul the kids around.
It's a blast to drive and as long as I can get my girl and my golf clubs around, it's fine with me.

I think a mid life crisis car costs a little more. Corvettes and Porsches are proper mid life crisis cars (I'm saving up)!

:)

CatDaddysBBQ 07-15-2014 08:10 AM

Ok, so I'm only 33 but sometimes I feel way older than that with the young audience on this forum. This thread is awesome.

I am an old soul though, learned to drive on a rhd mg b-GT when I was 12. Love old cars and motorcycles as well as newer stuff.

I dd my fr-s, autocross monthly and run a trd drop in air filter, works ab-m axle back and a anvil shift knob. Keeping it simple, light, loose and fun.

MVJ1975 07-15-2014 08:31 AM

I hit 40 next May.

I have a rather large 80's playlist on my iPod, it gets played heavily in the car. Awesome music.

Most of my mods so far are cosmetic - BeatSonic sharkfin, FiveAD spoiler, JDM exhaust tips, Gramlights 57Xtreme wheels, and Conti DW tires.

Don Ivey 07-15-2014 09:59 AM

Most of you guys are young whipper-snappers (sixty-five here), but I enjoy the interactions. I, too, am all boxer engines now, with FR-S, Porsche and Subaru's (Moto Guzzi is like a boxer on steriods). Didn't mean to get this way, but what can you do. As for the eighties, remember some of it, but most of early eighties, and all of the seventies are a smokey haze. Things are clearer now.

jjaisli 07-15-2014 10:24 AM

I'm 43 and have a 2013 FR-S 6MT which I purchased, hmm, just about one year ago. So far:

TRD Exhaust
TRD CAI
Motegi M121 Alloy Wheels
Dunlop Direzza Zii tires
Open Flash Tablet
Open Flash Header (on order)
Grimspeed Front Strut Tower Brace
Grimspeed Master Cylinder Brace
Motul 600 Brake Fluid
Stoptech Brake Pads

The car isn't my daily driver and it's garaged most days and used mainly on weekends and for the occasional track day. So I've only racked up about 3700 miles so far.

EDIT: and for goodness sakes, the best part of the 80s WAS the music!

Cliu91 07-15-2014 10:30 AM

I love seeing older people drive the 86, nothing cooler than seeing a grey/white haired driver on the roads.

Frozen_skidmark 07-15-2014 12:13 PM

I think it has f* ck all to do with age or whatever. I bought it because I wanted a small sports car and I love the way this car looks... One of the sexiest body styles I've seen since I met the old lady.

I think everyone is all riced out, Foosed out, and choppered out. Small sports cars are back in a big way this year! I've seen more mini muscle on the road this year than I have in years! And I'll tell ya... It's good to see. The older guys legitimize it for the younger guys too, which is good. It's good to see autocross back and affordable track days, and sports car class back on TV. Looks like good times ahead for a bit until the next dumbass fad comes along and screws it up. Enjoy it while it lasts. :)

Jaylyons1 07-15-2014 04:23 PM

I don't see anyone who is 40ish remembering the 70's. 50ish maybe.

Dadhawk 07-15-2014 04:26 PM

Fortyish is in my rear view mirror.... does that count?

Big D Design 07-15-2014 04:45 PM

Big D FRS

I'm 57. I use this as my DD. Got the car the 2nd day out May 27th 2012. Paid 5
grand over MSRP. Back then in Florida the car was either above sticker or you
didn't have the ability to buy it. It's still like that on the East coast here in
Florida. Have 3 other cars and 2 of them are loud as hell with MT (Roush Mustang,
Nissan Maxima, Cadillac Fleetwood). I'm keeping the exhaust quiet for now. It
seems that the hp gain is not that much with aftermarket parts without a tune.
Having stock exhaust also allows for constant "bring it to the redline" type of
driving". The car is great on gas and feels like you are going fast without
getting a ticket for flooring the car.

In the far future.... I am interested in a LS3 engine swap with a 520hp crate
motor from Chevy with a Tremec 6 speed XL trans. A company is developing a kit
that will be turnkey. And it will only weigh 30 to forty pounds more. The stock
motor and all the things to make it FI is pretty expensive. Close to 9 grand for
all the goodies to get a reliable car. I would rather go for the LS3 swap when the
time comes. It will cost about 19 grand if I use a new crate motor and trans. It
will cost about 9 grand with a used motor and trans. For now I will drive the car
as is for the next few years and let the designers work out all the details of an
LS swap. So far the engine fits (LSx) way back into the engine bay with the
company that I'm watching (Vorshlag)

Thanks for the advice, I wish I had it a bit sooner. I am graduating high school and subsequently entering college 4 years ahead of when I would of been if I had stayed on the traditional education path. I have come upon the realization that I just traded some of what could've been really fun years for college, bills, and responsibility.

DAMMIT WHY DOES RESPONSABILITY HAVE TO EXIST

59 here. This is my 423rd vehicle (110 were motorcycles) and it provides more smiles per mile than any other car I have had and that includes 46 Corvettes and most every exotic and muscle car you can imagine. Only mods are K and N filter, catback exhaust, window tint, 3M invisashield, and mud flap kit. Don't really want to do much and fool with the great gas mileage.

423 vehicles.....

Ubersuber 07-15-2014 10:51 PM

Old fart here. Mudflaps and Bilsteins answered my demands.

OZ Alleggerita wheels and Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3 were basically no brainers.

The only teenaged thing I did was cut one half inch out of the rear bump stops because ya gotta live a little.

Deep Purple? Pink Floyd? Led Zeppelin? Oh yeah...

I mean what a car this is.

Reminds me of a 1966 Triumph GT 6 except when I turn the key it starts!

But that 40 pounds is not in the same place. The 86 platform has a center of gravity that is only 18 inches off the ground. That's lower than even the new Corvettes, and it's part of what makes this car handle the way it does. If you put more weight higher up, it would raise the center of gravity, and I would expect it to drastically impact the way the car corners.

Don't regret that. The teenage years are wasted in high school. I would love to have been in college at age 14.

Hahahaha...I will try my best. I am actually entering at 17 (comunity college in 4 weeks, University the semester after that). However, I am entering with 3 years credit, so my first year I will enter as a college Senior. 14 and in college.....damn. As fun as that would be, the bullying would be insane. I mean, at least I look like a 21 year old.

I doubt that. High school is generally a closed system that empowers bullies, since the victims are trapped and really can't get away, and the bullies feel secure. College is usually so much bigger, and you have so many options to make it yours, that it takes away the bullies' power. That's not to say that bullying doesn't exist, but I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. And while prodigies in high school are often treated as freaks, a lot of people at the university level respect them. And if they don't? Screw 'em.

I've been through college twice and will probably do it again. You couldn't get me back into high school for anything, except maybe to go back and tell some of my high school teachers they were completely full of crap.

Sir, with all the respect in the world, I would love nothing more than to agree with you. And, perhaps, my experiences have been skewed by only attending a local community college, I am not sure.

However, I have experienced first hand discrimination/hazing/bullying from college students. One student in my class was a 16 year old, absolutely brilliant, and far smarter than myself. Brandon, his name, was 16, however had the appearance of a 10-11 year old. He was extremely short, wore child's clothing because it was all that fit him, and was not the most mature of all people.

I watched as he entered college full of enthusiasm and excited. By the end, I had caught him crying in his car more than once after school, he had severe depression. I tried my best to befriend him, but I could tell that he was just getting destroyed by the atmosphere that he was subjected to.

I am glad that your experience was so great, and I hope that is the way it is for everyone. The sad truth is that, no matter how old, there are always going to be the dou**ebag bullies that make life awful for everyone. I agree the community college is a worse environment than a 4-year, simply because the community college is OFTEN (not always) where this type of people are forced to go.

Thank you for sharing your perspective, and I sincerely hope that this is not the case. As for myself, I am 6' 7" and 250lbs, 7-year Krav Maga /MMA student, so I am not too worried. But for everyone else like me, that is subjugated to bullying, my heart goes out to you.

I'll be 40 in a month. Picking up my 2015 tonight! :party0030:

I ride and mod motorcycles (street and track), so no plans to do any *major* mods to the car. Just want a fun *cage* to replace my Protege5 and BRZ has the best fun:cost ratio of anything I've test-driven.

Planned upgrades: Axleback, drop-in high-flow filter, tint, Weathertech mats, hitch (for bicycle rack) and maybe different wheels.. that's pretty much it (at least for now :D )
