I got rid of my 2002 Camaro SS 35th Anniversary because:

A) It's not all about going fast in a straight line
B) Daily driving it gets 18 mpg
C) Long term reliability on electronics questionable (power windows, etc)
D) Handling was not too outstanding

Granted it was the last generation of the LS1, it was still fairly heavy, but nothing like the new one.

They're good weekend cars and I plan on owning either a Mustang or a new gen Camaro that is lighter than the current one a few years down the road as a weekend warrior car.

I agree with much of what you say. As a daily driver this car doesn't make much sense. The FRS is far superior in that regard. My car is strictly a weekend toy.
As far as visibility I have no problem seeing out of it. Visibility backing up is bad. I wouldn't want to take my drivers test in this car as far as parking goes. The good thing is I won't be doing any backing up on the track and really don't care too much about who's behind me.
I stongly considered a 5.0 having competed with a friends 2011 Track Pack car. The thing that bothered the most was the fragile tranny. His grenaded at 4000 miles. The 1LE suspension behavior is much better composed with less pitch and roll. The 1LE,s are blowing away the Boss 302"a and even the Laguna Secas on the track.
Mustangs are scaling out at about 3500 to 3600 pounds. My stripper 1LE at about 3700 to 3800. Both are pigs. The 1LE just happens to be a faster pig on the road course.

As someone who occasionally gets an itch to buy a piece of American muscle, thanks for this informative post. It reminded me (first half) why they appeal to me, and (second half) why I know better than to get one. I just wouldn't be happy with that weight. And I know those 20x11" tires ain't cheap!

I'm going to stick with my "less is more" approach for now.

Enjoy it in good health (and report back with burnout photos)!

Rented one last time I was in LA. Loved it.

I'm with Wise - on the very rare occasion I see one here in Sydney I nearly break my neck. Looks great! Hope you enjoy it as much as the 86 dude.

Great choice of vehicle! Not a fan of the Camaro's size/weight, but if you are going to get into a muscle car, it seems like this, the ZL1, and the Boss 302 are the only ones worthy (IMO).

:eyebulge: Man those big tires. I might have to upgrade my shoes whenever I finish my engine swap. 18x9's probably won't serve a 500hp engine well....

Congrats on the 1LE

I'll see you on Camaro5.com

Let me know if you need lighting for it

Great choice! The Camaro was tied for #1 on the top of my shopping list when I bought the FR-S. In fact, had it not been for the 1st86 program I would have probably ended up with the Camaro because my DD died 60 days before the FR-S was available and had I just been waiting rather than a member of the 1st86 program I probably would have not waited.

Also playing into my decision was the price differential because I had my heart set on the ZL1 and couldn't back down from it, but couldn't justify the price differential to the FR-S.

We don't get muscle cars here so when I read dark side GTI comes to mind. Well at least I got to see Bumblebee and co. when they were filming here.
