Very good post, i was looking for something exactly like this. Does anyone have a link to a diy for painting your car with aerosol or something on the like. All i find on youtube are people either painting with guns or guys painting their civics with your basic spray paint from home depot... I'm completely new to car painting and want to know what i will need.

I think automotivetouchup (op's paint source) has a youtube video up. It also shows them using their fancy spray attachment. It's small enough of a part, would make a good beginner project. Only caveat is that it's molded plastic, make sure it is cleaned properly before priming and painting - those molded parts sometimes still have release agents on the surface that need to be removed.

Thanks, i think im just paranoid some lint or a fly lands on it during the drying process lol. I'm an art major at school and this has happened to me before haha

That's definitely a concern too - but it's not as much of a concern as you can always wet sand and polish to remove small defects ( if you put down a good layer of clear). If the plastic piece isn't prepped right, you will have bigger problems, your paint won't stick, you'll get pinholes, etc. No big deal really, just make sure you clean it well with some sort of plastic cleaner/prep. Most importantly, make sure you're safe. Don't breathe the stuff, I'd rather have stuff in my paint than paint in my lungs :)

spoiler looks great!
Those wheels....mmmmmmm.....minty

boredom.is.me 02-04-2014 07:59 AM

These spoilers are now going for $60.

I got the Bayson R spoiler from eBay and plan on painting it myself too. I've used automotivetouchup.com paint before to paint my mudflaps and the match is perfect. Do you really thing it would take 2 cans of base coat? I was thinking just 1.

illest86 02-04-2014 02:23 PM

There's no doubt about it, the match is great.

However, 5 years down the road, my prediction is that it's covered in orange peel. Maybe by then you'll want to paint the whole car. At that point, I would recommend professional work.

wparsons 02-04-2014 02:55 PM

Orange peel doesn't show up years later, it shows up right away. If you wet sand between coats of the base you should end up with a very good finish.

funbeatsfast 02-04-2014 03:13 PM

Installs with double sided tape, right? Any particular kind of tape work best?

Forget I said orange peel then. The quality of the paint will degrade.

Only time will tell. When you paint a set of tail lights with store-bought spray paint, and the weather hits them for over a year, they don't retain the same finish.

This won't be any different.

at that point, he can just repaint them. still inexpensive.

I guess so.

My mentality is do it right the first time, then, Enjoy... Permanently. This is a $25000 vehicle, not a $30 toy model.

But hey, to the OP, this is a solid home-made job. Looks like you took ur time with it and it paid off.

wparsons 02-04-2014 05:40 PM

Cheaper clear will definitely degrade faster than two part professional clear, but it's not like it's going to fall apart over a single year, and it would be dead simple to just wet sand and re-clear it when it does start to show it's age.

Even super high quality clear will degrade over time, there is not permanent when it comes to paint.

How do you know what quality paint he used? Maybe it's decent - though I don't think it's urethane.

You're right, I don't know which paint.

But when a part is professionally sprayed in a paint booth or garage - Aren't there advantages?

I'm not a painter. But the sealed booth - No dust, no crap. The gun that delivers evenly-distributed paint. Then top that off with quality paint and clear.

I'm just afraid that our little community here is going to end up with a lot of rip-off body kits painted and installed in your front yard.

There are car enthusiasts and artistic people out there that will notice the difference.

I need to come to RR and borrow your skills. Hah! Looks great for sure!

All true - but I think people sometimes see spray painting as an arcane art, which it's not really. Just a little technique, and with most paints you can fix many of your screw ups with some wet sanding. Gotta learn somehow ;) The biggest thing for amateur painters in my book is safety - make SURE you're not inhaling the stuff, especially if you get your hands on really toxic paints like polyurethane.

boredom.is.me 02-06-2014 05:20 AM

So I ordered one from BaysonR...

OURO3OROS 02-06-2014 10:11 AM

I ordered one of the Bayson replicas, but it's sitting in my living room while I get quotes from body shops. Yours looks great, but I don't think I could replicate that.

hmong337 01-02-2015 03:16 AM

Took me forever to look for this thread. I got a rep 5ad spoiler that I may attempt to paint and mount come spring time. But if I could get it pro painted for ~$150, it'll probably be best to go that route as I am retarded when it comes to body work.
