Good choice. Clear bra is the best investment I've done. After 1000 miles of freeway driving in the desert it still looks brand new. If they offer it also get your headlights clear bra'd.

Not sure about windshield but I'm not going to tint that anyway. When I said "front" I meant the sides of the passenger and driver. Sorry if I was confusing! You're super lucky to not have any problems with the cops with your 20%! :happyanim:

I meant front sides as well. My windshield is untouched. But yes, it does get a little annoying sometimes at night if you're not in an area where there are no street lights or something because visibility through the tint sucks. In daylight, it's super clear from the inside and dark from the outside. Good choice on the 35% fronts and 20% rear.

Someone else mentioned a back-up camera which I think is a great idea. Definitely looking into that. Thanks for the recommendation in Bohemia but I already have a place. I'm getting clear bra + tints together at the same time this weekend :happyanim:

Nice, good luck with everything! Post up pics here when it's done!

Which place are you using for the clear bra/tint and what kind of deal are you getting? I know I want to get a bra and probably an opticoat on my car ASAP, just don't know where to get it done yet around here.

I've read good things about Signature Detailing, and I remember seeing a deal they posted up on these forums for full clear-bra and opticoat for $1500, but that's out in Jersey.

I'm thinking about window tint soon, but front side window tint is illegal in CA so I'm trying to compromise between dark enough to have some effect but not dark enough to draw attention...
I'm thinking 35% in the rear (I had 5% on my last car and rear visibility was shit) and 50% on the sides..is 50% going to be too dark?

50% will be so light it's going to be useless unless you get really high quality tint (3m crystalline) I'd go with 35% all around if your using a Craigslist tint person.

First of all legal in NY is 75%, the stock tint

Second anything you do will be factored by stock tint. So if you get 50% it will really be 35%

See how many tint tickets you get before you decide stock (75%) is fine. It took me 2 years on my last car. When I got my ticket at 21% I realized looking good is not worth the price.

I never factored in stock tint. Although, I'm not going to take it off now. I went with 30 and by that math, and even if stock is 80, that puts me between 21 - 24. No issues so far (knock on wood), but it makes me worry now.

Long Island here as well. I've got 35% 3M on sides and back and never been hassled by Suffolk or Nassau PD or Suffolk Sheriffs.

Got it done at the Tint Shop in Great Neck for 150 and a coupon dropped it a bit as well.

How did the tints come out? I'm located on Long Island as well and I've been debating on whether to get tints or not. I might just pull the trigger and go for it.

I recommend going as dark as your state allows.

I'm in NY and front windows has to be 70% and backs is whatever you want. I realized that the windows are already tinted at 70% but I don't like 70% :D

I think the headlights got clear bra-ed. Picking her up tomorrow! Can't wait :D Question though, why do people get headlights clear-bra-ed? They're already clear...I would think if they did get scratched up, is it even that noticeable? And if they were scratched up, how much is it to replace?

I will definitely post up pictures! She's already done. Picking her up tomorrow :D CAN'T WAIT! Then I can speed without worrying about chips! Just kidding.

I went to 631 Coatings in Deer Park for the clear bra + tints. I don't know what opticoat is, to be honest. I got Suntek for both clear bra + tints, both which were recommended so we'll see as time progresses. I had people recommend places in Jersey too but I wanted to stay within New York. I didn't get full clear bra on the FRS and if you plan on getting that for yours at the place I went to, it is going to be a lot more than $1500, just a heads up lol. I'd clear bra the whole car if it wasn't so expensive just to be safe because there are a lot of stupid drivers in New York! But I'm not baller status and don't have a sugar daddy :( Most people from what I've been reading on the forum haven't gotten the whole car clear bra-ed either. Just the main areas that chips usually occur. Hope that somewhat helped!

Many, many people highly recommended the clear bra (I was hesitant because of the pricing) and I can almost bet (knowing how I am) that if I didn't get it, I would regret it once I see my first chip LOL.

I got the headlights clear bra'd because just like the paint they get rock chips and it will also prevent any UV yellowing or oxidization (nasty white film).

Overall it keeps everything looking brand new.

Headlights are fairly expensive, and the reason they get clear-bra'd is because they do tend to get chipped up and though they're not as noticeable as paint chips, they will (over time) look slightly hazy, and light coming out of it will be a little scattered.

Wyattkb 11-03-2013 01:46 AM

I also got the Suntek clear bra, awesome product. I'm debating on doing opticoat next.

Perhaps you can read what other people responded on this thread and look at pictures too? And maybe see what each percentage looks like in person. I've seen 20% in person and it looked perfect but been getting 50/50 feedback on visibility at night which is why I stuck with 35% on the sides and 20% on the back.

Plus, remember that the glass already is a little tinted. The person that did my tints checked the FRS and it said it was 70% already so I'm sure after getting the 35% on the sides, it's actually darker, if you know what I mean.

50% doesn't seem like it'd be too dark but I think you should see it in person to get a better feel of what you would prefer

well, when the headlights get hazy or get chipped, you can always upgrade to the JDM headlights....

Never knew that. Thanks for the info! If you do get that nasty white film, you can always scrub it off though right? Though it probably is very tedious...

What exactly is the opticoat? It sounds like a clear protective coating as well.

It's kind of funny that my car has all the things you're considering so I can maybe help out with this one too.

Opti-coat (or Opti-guard) is basically a secondary clear coat that you would get. Basically it only provides chemical protection, unlike a clear bra that physical protection so you don't get chips. The opti-coat is almost like a permanent wax, it keeps your paint looking brand new and every time you wash it even with just water and nothing else, it looks like your car was just waxed/detailed. Get the idea? It also protects against damage from road salts and what not.

The only thing is though that if you want to get this done, it should be done before you do a clear bra, because the opti-coat treatment goes on top of the clear coat after getting a paint-correction and then a clear bra on top. If you do clear bra first, you can still get the rest of the car opti-coated, but then any parts of your car that were already covered in clear bra will have all those fine scratches, imperfections sealed in and opti-coat won't be able to fix that.

I had mine opti-guarded (the pro version of opti-coat) the night I picked my car up, and then covered in Xpel-ultimate the next day (a higher end version of clear bra that self-heals any scratches that get on it. It really does work).

Hope it helps you and anyone else interested in opti-coat.

It is quite a grey area here in Ontario Canada since the police constables have discretion when it comes to whether tint is too dark (no defined percentage). I have always heard that if they can determine the gender of the driver, it is an acceptable percentage. I have always rolled down my window when pulled over for anything (out of courtesy and openness), so, I think I should be okay.

Sry, by full clear bra I just meant full hood, front fender, rockers, mirrors, headlights. Def not the entire car cause that would be super expensive like you said lol.

How much did it cost at the place in deer park and which parts did you have covered?

Ammunition 11-05-2013 02:39 PM

Any update on your tint, OP? I'm curious to see how it turned out as I've been considering that same tint set up myself.

Full hood, headlights, front bumper, front fenders, mirrors, rocker panels along with the bottom of the sides of the car (not sure what the technical term is - anyone? It's that little strip).

Sorry for the delay! Waiting for a good sunny day to take a picture. I tried taking a few but too much reflection and way too cloudy. Then another day it was rainy, ugh. I'm very happy with the percentages though!

babylobster 11-16-2013 12:41 AM

I've attached two photos of what the tints look like! 35% on the side (uniform) and 20% on the rear. As you can see from the side view, it's not very dark but that's fine with me. The back however is pretty dark (in my opinion) and even though there's a strong reflection in the picture (it was even brighter originally; I had to Photoshop it) it is difficult to look into the car from the rear. No problems looking out the back when driving at night though if anyone's worried about that! Hope my pictures helped! If not, I can try to take pictures again, perhaps in a different lighting. Just LMK! :D

Cards88 06-06-2014 03:17 AM

Thanks for showing the tint! Exactly what I was looking for!

Lemar58 06-06-2014 04:54 AM

I have limo all around (5%) and I've grown accustomed to the visibility at night. Love the privacy and have yet to be pulled over with 22k+ miles. I just roll my windows down when I see cops lol
