I'd prefer my car to keep doing a lot with the least. That's amazing, that's engineering, and that's what legends are made of.

Normally, I would agree with you, except that it has been stated before, including by the designers that this car was intended and designed from day one to have a convertible version of it.

That means there is already some rigidity and strength (and extra unneeded stuff you say you don't want) built into the frame.

I'm no automotive engineer but I'm interpolating from that you could add roof panels (Targa, t-tops, but not a sunroof) that would have minimal impact to the car, and could potentially even lower the CG.

Yea but to give your opinion and tell everyone else that they ruined the car. Make you sound like you need to put down others to get your point heard which is textbook narcissism, Most of us here are technical otherwise we wouldn't have looked up and join this forum. Just saying. ALL LOVE :happy0180:

How's this for an opinion then. The convertible GT86 that Toyota will almost certainly release is a truly terrible iteration of the car that only exist because it'll rack up sales among non enthusiast types because a convertible GT86 is pretty much full retard.

If you like it, and it doesn't make your car unsafe then by all means go for it. In the same right that you have to do things to your car I have the same right to laugh at you for it. Every morning I wake and pour myself a tall glass of Haterade, plenty to go around.

Oh I fully expect they'll sell every convertible they build, in fact MomHawk might even buy one to replace her convertible Mustang. And to me it's all good if it helps keep the product line viable and the aftermarket parts flowing.

Let me let you in a on a secret.

Designing a car from the get go as a convertible then adding a hardtop is one of the most awesome ways to produce an amazingly stiff/rigid body shell.

See also: Chrysler Crossfire (terrible car but very stiff chassis)
Porsche Cayman

No secret there, just saying the parts are already there, might as well use them.

I've owned a car that wasn't designed that way ('83 Z-28 with an aftermarket Targa) so I know what it's like to drive one that wasn't designed for it. It's a trade-off I'm willing to make.

I was just simply trying to explain why you were getting flac for your comment. If you notice in this thread a number a people didn't like the t-tops but they didn't cut down the ones who did but if you enjoy playing an a**hole behind a keyboard go right ahead this is a free country and I'm proud to have such a medium to express one's feeling. Hope i didn't make you angry or anything and I apologize if you took my comment the wrong way. :w00t:

No T-tops for me, I like the aluminum roof. I even hope they don't release the convertible, the twins are already becoming a bit of a chic car in my area. The girls are buying up the auto's in droves.

T-top: Ehh
Targa: Hell yeah

Brzetto 07-12-2013 07:36 PM

Does a mullet instantly appear after the t-top installation?

sevi21 07-13-2013 10:40 AM

How about a full targa top, that would be sweet

jybrd 07-13-2013 01:11 PM

I vote yes, but I also wouldnt mind seeing the top that the Supra had. Wish I could remember what it was called.

mike_ekim1024 09-03-2013 06:18 PM

Just toying with the idea just like the OP - what about two small sunroofs?

http://www.tgautomotive.com/product_p/vt1717b5h.htm

Or go fully polycarbonate roof :)

Some day I'd like to have a few mods that are not off-the-shelf and unique.

Exactly. I'm not going to cut my car up but I would love to have one that has it. It's so rare to find a car that has a removable top anymore. Basically your only option is a Corvette

And the corvettes have their issues with the T tops.. I had noise issues to a point where they had a recall on them.. New hinges for the locks and the noise came back after 10k miles.. It also adds weight to the car for the extra structural support required..
They actually started a flying roof club on the forum as some would forget to lock them.. And they had separation issues due to the laminate used in the roof..
I like the fixed roof now...

mush 09-03-2013 08:35 PM

i voted before i read the thread LOL

i would not cut my roof for it, but if it came from factory ill take targa or t top

whaap 09-03-2013 08:47 PM

A little off topic. I'm happy with the roof configuration the way it is but I really wish this thing was a hatchback.

The headroom allows for a helmet. This is important if you really want to enjoy the low COG.

Young_makaveli 09-03-2013 09:21 PM

Reminds me of my z32 when you say t-top

Hopefully they won't leak when it rains lol

InvalidJohnny5 09-03-2013 09:37 PM

My only disappointment is the no hatch, I feel that it the rear window came up with the truck it would be perfect.

Hmmm I don't know how I feel about that idea

Wouldn't make the car a tad heavier?

InvalidJohnny5 09-03-2013 10:56 PM

Probably a neglegible 50lbs.

i dont think the heavy thing would be the issue but rather the whole structural rigidity thing. not a big issue either way but this forum is pretty good at making mountains out of mole hills.

For info, the top isn't aluminum, it is a very lightweight high strength steel. That material and the 'pagoda' design is what adds to the rigidity of the coupe, reduces the aerodynamic drag, adds downforce and lowers the center of gravity all while keeping the weight down to a minimum.

Pretty much in line with the philosophy behind the car in the first place. I really don't think the factory will mess with it.

TNPerformance 09-04-2013 10:25 AM

Hardtop all the way for me! I love the sexiness of the roof! My supra is a targa top and one of my z32's was ttop. I NEVER took them off! (Also have owned many sunroof cars that I rarely opened, although I did more than the removable top ones) It's kind of annoying in fact unless you are just going on a really long cruise. But if you are going back and forth to work or down to the store it sucks having to put em back onto go inside.

My supra is targa - would give anything for a hardtop
My last z32 was ttop- I sold and now have a "slicktop"
My dads FD rx7 is sunroof- I got a hardtop one
My FRS is hardtop- and you couldn't hold me at gunpoint an make me change it! Lol

frs10 09-04-2013 10:28 AM

lol no thanks man... i love the car the way it is...

theurbaninja 09-04-2013 04:26 PM

Factory Targa? Hells yes.
Assuming the design wouldn't change the dynamics of the car that much.

The Targa is definitely the second greatest thing about my Supra. Not really sure how anyone could say they wouldn't want the roof to come off.
