Sure but I'm pretty positive a Supra will hold it's value better if you compare today's price and in 5 years than an FR-S/BRZ... Also Supra makes a great daily driver even when pushing 500whp (or so I'm told from friends who own them). Someone said something about "not being able to go back to CDs" etc. C'mon, you know you can just upgrade the in car entertainment right? :P That's not valid argument for me :D In my opinion buying a new car the depreciation is much worse than buying an old car and repairing it. At least you're getting something for the money spent, not just down the drain really... What do you guys think? BTW: I have a question for you guys, do you get any taxation on your car per year depending on displacement or anything else? Because here we get like $800 USD for a 3.0L engine car (Supra) versus $300 USD for a 2.0L engine PER YEAR - Rotary cars get a $74 tax/year :D That's one more thing to consider here...! |

Also OP if you want to do something while you wait, I'd suggest test driving an RX8, the FR-S will probably won't be far off handling/acceleration wise... If you find the RX8 fast enough and you like the way it handles, it will be a safe bet to assume it's worth waiting for the FR-S (or just get an RX-8 R3 :P).. However, you won't get the same power curve + delivery, 9k rpm redline and probably less legroom for rear seats.. But you'll get better MPG for sure, reliabiltiy is questionable at this point :)
But ! If you find its performance lacking and end up with the same comments a lot of people like to post (e.g. "its gutless" , "its slowww", "needs more power", "I get beat by Camrys at stoplights") then forget the FR-S altogether - that's my suggestion, I think many will agree... |

haha - That's a lot of cars though... a lot. Btw, I love Nashville, was there recently - fun place to live! |

What do you drive now? :P

yea im a mechanic and ive driven a lot of cars including a couple of rx-8s theyr nice cars im just not a fan of their looks. also the engine its not reliable, i think is funny you have to pour oil down the intake to get it to start. also drove my friends 800hp "monster" supra in a quarter mile run that was lots of fun. i work restoring old muscle cars for my father in law who sells them at auctions so i've driven a couple of high horsepower cars. im 21 so if i get an frs/brz it will be my first new car wich i think it would be cool to say im the only owner. on the other hand woulnt ming getting a used low mileage supra just cant afford the 30k price tag on most of them right now either way i decided im gonna wait a year or so before i make a decision. |

They are amazing machines. |
A guy I used to work with had a mint low milage un modified white TT Supra with auto box.
He sold 6 years ago for I think 16,000 NZD to this young guy. He had it for a few weeks and slid the supra into a pole. Wrote the pole and car off. Our market had been swamped with 2nd Hand jap imports so vaules of them arnt as good as what you guys have over there. I see people are currently trying to sell them for between $6900 and $20,000. |

+1 Very nice selection though. It would make me sad to see so many nice cars come and go :( Do you have a specific one that you've kept over the years? Your pride and joy? |

RX8's are interesting..... Yes, you will get beaten by v6 camrys off traffic lights, but not at 100km/h rolling take off.... They do lack torque, but the power up high is quite good. They aren't slow, they just aren't fast.
They do handle VERY well. Particularly the GT version we get here. It had the bilstein suspension, 19's and recaro's. The renesis motor is quite reliable, the coilpacks aren't. The only engines we ever replace are fro automatic cars that haven't been driven properly. Drive your rx8 hard and service well and it will last for ever. And the 86 is not supposed to be fast like the supra. I wish people would get that through their heads. but it WILL handle better. If you want out right speed, DO NOT buy this car. |
The fr-s is better to have, its a new clean car, its a hardtop with solid handling and good mpg, but if you are after the big HP then go for a supra but good luck finding a clean low milage manual for the same price.

Don't know how much RX7 FDs cost there but just find a cheap one so you have funds for a rebuilt ported engine with an upgraded turbo kit (so no more reliability problems and you start clean) and other upgrades (suspension, brakes, interior, respray).
It's a nice project and will probably cost you less than a Supra or FR-S and you'll be pushing over 450whp and get the perfect 50:50 handling FDs are known for...You'll struggle to find anything to match your performance in a straight line or in a track. Of course expect 16-18mpg but anything with that amount of power should consume the same amount of fuel pretty much... oh before someone says it - it won't break that easy if you upgrade apex seals, port the engine, do the necessary cooling upgrades and use a single turbo system you're eliminating 98% of problems as long as you maintain it properly from that point on. :D I found a 1998 FD with 19,000km (11,000miles) on a new engine for 11,000$. I'd be interested to see how much FDs cost in the US :D |

new with warranty. Just as fun. more modern design. better mpg. better paint and interior. brand new ownership. |
Just an idea. You could get the supra and rebuild everything to make it like new but then again imagine how much all this must cost if you want it done right?

Make it like new? A lot of money. A LOT! But you could pick up a reliable TT Auto (maybe a manual if youre lucky) for like 20k, with 100k or so miles. Then spend 5-6k going Single and you have a 500hp street beast that will last you another 100k miles at least. But only if that's what you're into... I'd rather have a BRZ Limited... |
or you can spend that money making it into a manual and do suspension/brakes/tires+wheel mods and make it handle quite good.
Stock it has more than enough power, maybe BPU and be done with it. Focus more on making it grip ;) |

yea but supras handle very well in stock form also 98g's on a skidpad is more than good. also i really like the fd's my friend has one, twin turbo running bout 300hp or so he says but ive driven it and its pretty fast. ive seen a couple here for round 13k to 15k for a nice one, definitly a car i would like to have. one of the sexiest cars out there but very rare here at least in florida. |
instead of one or the other, why not get the fr-s ,ofcourse, and instead of the supra do a sc3/400 with a 1jz or 2jz supra swap? then you can have your cake and eat it too.

I think he actually meant putting the 1/2j in the z30..
A 2j would destroy the 86 |
The FR-S\BRZ is the perfect bridge car. There will be a new Mazda RX7, Acura NSX, Nissan Z35, Corvette C7, and Toyota Supra in 3 to 4 years time, if you get bored with the FR-S\BRZ. But also remember by then gas could be $6 to $7 a gallon....and all of those except for the Z, RX7, and Supra are going to be well over $45k...
The hope is that Nissan brings back the Silvia. Honda the Integra and the S2000. Subaru a Coupe version of the WRX\STI (poor mans GTR). And whoever can make a lightweight RWD or AWD coupe for cheap. |

I'm looking very closely at the FR-S as my next car. However, having owned a Supra for 4 trouble free years now, I have come to realize that even though it is not new, for the same price bracket, it's a fantastic alternative.
Surely, they are not made for the same purpose, but it's hard not to want to buy another one. I think I can find the same satisfaction (lightweight, nimble, etc) if I can find a clean 1J S14 with working heat and A/C (I've owned an RB S13 before).... |

yea i would love to see that too, but im pretty sure that would mess with the balance of the car. not to mention how low the hood is ont this car and how low the engine would have to sit. cant wait to see how this new engine is gonna handle hp. |

Guys I'm not saying put a 2 jz in the frs I'm saying that u can bolt a jz motor into a lex sc300. Also suspension, brakes and drivetrain parts are interchangeable. Could build a single turbo monster for a fraction of the cost of a supra and insure for dirt cheap. Then he also can buy a frs with left over cash :)

An SC 300 has a 2JZ-GT in it already and can make about 600 without a problem. An IS 300 is not a 4 door Supra!
A FR-S is not in the same class as a Supra decide what class of car you want and then you will know what to get. I say have both they both do different things well, that’s what I am doing. Other than some dumb stuff people sometimes do to them Supra are very reliable and they hold their value very well. The people who have never owned a supra should do some more research before giving bad advice IMHO. Building a SC300 up to stock Supra TT capabilities is not that hard. Building a SC330 to compete with an APU Supra cost just as much if not more than building a APU Supra and you don’t get the good resale that a Supra TT has so in the long run it cost a lot more. This has been gone over MANY MANY MANY times on supraforms. |

The main difference between a GT and A GTE short block is the oil squirters. There have been many drag cars with GT blocks making more than 800HP. I have a GTE and would rather have one for the Road Racing that I built my Supra for, but GT blocks are very capable. |
Quote:
And it's GE, not GT. The IS engine is not very different at all, except for the listed differences. However, no sane person would run a GE Head when pushing big power, it's not nearly as capable as a GTE. |
Quote:
The IS engine is the same but the car is quite different. True but you can make 600 with it. The intake is a bigger problem than the head. But both are reasons y in the long run it cost more to build a big power SC or IS than a Supra. |
I was on the same boat and recently bought my MKIV last summer instead of an FR-S. The Supra is legendary, bulletproof and the one I found in the midwest was damn near mint and unmolested.
After seeing the sort of a cheapness, the 1st year production issues and lack of Toyota quality, I've decided to wait until the hype goes down. I'd rather pick up a used one, a lease return or see what else Toyota plans to introduce. The FR-S feels too paper mache to me and def not worth 27K OTD. |
I have both, i say do it, when someone says the frs is low on power i just say i have another toyota to help me with that problem....
|
wow so much hate towards the supra.

its exterior is a timeless design. its was well ahead of its time. its a collectible car witch i dont think the frs will ever be. |
