there needs to be a 24hr knock-out gas system that sprays out of the steering column available for purchase aftermarket. That way said scumbag thief can wake up to a bunch of cops.

Sorry about the car dude =/

jarviz 03-28-2013 09:47 AM

Yea I never understood why toyota never installed an alarm. I can't imagine it being a weight issue.

Tint and an alarm will help deter this crap in the future.

Before others say it, yes, if a good thief really wants the car, they will get it.

How does a tint help minimize thefts? just curious.

Can't see what's in the car, less risk of smash and grab, would be my guess?

NorseLegend 03-28-2013 11:31 AM

Quick release steering wheel! Remove and take it with you! .... But really, that sucks, at least it was just the window and not the whole car. Hopefully it will not happen again.

As evidenced by the fact that as far as I know, very few have actually been stolen, just broken into and attempts to strip parts. I believe the ones that actually have gone missing were towed away by a flatbed truck.

And the above posters are right, there isn't a market for parts yet, you'd have to sell the whole car which really wouldn't be worth it, what would you get at most? $20k? With the same amount of work you could nab a much more valuable car...

naikaidriver 03-28-2013 04:34 PM

I am completely baffled how so many of you are missing the statements that a few have made and I am more than happy to repeat...

The FRS has a built-in immobilizer!! It works!! If the ECU doesn't read the proper, chipped key nearby, the car will NOT start! Its in the owner's manual! Mine acted up on me a month ago and my car did NOT start for 4 hours!

The worst that will happen is your car will be damaged (no alarm on Earth will prevent that) or something inside will be stolen. If there are valuables in your car, they will be long gone by the time you get out there.

I am really sorry to hear about your car. It sucks and I've been there. Hope you get it repaired and back on the road soon!

Scott

Dake 03-28-2013 05:15 PM

Outside of the immobilizer, is it stick or auto?

Sucks about the damage though.

norsamerican 03-28-2013 05:19 PM

Tint makes it hard for a thief to see into the car. If a thief can't see in, they are wary of what could be waiting for them (a sleeping owner, camera, dog, etc.) Also, some forms of tint make it slightly more difficult to get a clean break on the glass.

And Im surprised the cops were that proactive with bringing the forensics unit out for prints, not that anything will come of it. I'm sorry to be a pessimist, but cops typically don't give two shits about car thefts - at least from prior experience.

this is true! if ya put a "lo-jack" in it,then they care, because their job becomes much easier! scary, aggravating world!

It's rather difficult to steal mine. Just look at all the anti theft measure I've installed.

Probably a bit too far north for you, sorry man. By the time you got here the scenery would change your mind, just a nice relaxing place to live.

I am also unsure who 'old Betsy' is, hoping it is not some sort of old household pet which you had treated by a taxidermist. Not sure why you would bring that anyways.

Hahahaha Lawrence is such a $#!thole! Oddly enough, the only time I'd ever been there was to drop off a Porsche transaxle to a shop. Yes, there's a shop in Lawrence that fixes Porsches. Needless to say, it looked slightly out of place and I have no idea how all the cars weren't stolen already!

I'm glad I can leave my car unlocked outside my house in my plain vanilla town and at my work. Thankfully in the 10yrs I've been parking semi-rare sports cars outside they've never once been messed with. Prefer to park 'em in the garage just the same. Got a pretty serious security system on the house!

Yeah I guess coming from the Honda world thefts are almost always profit driven.. so just joy rides are odd to me lol

Good article and relevant!

In all likelihood, the man will be charged with manslaughter. While I don't feel especially bad for the car thief, he was not presenting an "immediate threat of bodily harm or injury" to the car's owner and therefore, self-defense would be a tough sell in court. While there are some states that allow for the use of deadly force in the protection of property, Washington State is not one of them.

As a CCP holder, I make sure to familiarize myself with all deadly force laws in whichever state that I bring my weapon. (Especially Georgia!) I would recommend any of you that are talking "big" about killing a car thief do the same. You may end up being the one behind bars.

Scott

rice_classic 03-29-2013 03:40 PM

New type of booby-trap:

Tiny cameras covering all angles (and interior) that automatically capture pictures upon sensing bump/movement/broken glass; and upload them via 3G/4G networks to the Cloud so when you come out to your car being busted or stolen, images of the thieves are already sitting on your cloud server to show the cops... Hell, to show the world!

Invent that and you have a million dollar idea!

When days were a bit older we used to hang people in the public square for stealing a horse... Oh how I pine for the good 'ol days.

my passenger side was always the one to get smashed out of any of my cars, at least they were nice enough not to let me get rained on when i got back in my car :D

Starscream15 03-29-2013 08:16 PM

Always wanted to get something like this in case a car was stolen. Call 911 and have an officer pick you up and go for a ride along just to see the look on the faces of the baddies.

Man this sucks. I had my car broken into a few years back & the punks stole the system out of it. I hope they get the scum who did this.

it ain't me! i said the "boys" from lawrence! they could care less about scenery!. old betsy is the shotgun you have by the door to greet them when they arrive, but you are correct, too far north for them, ain't worth the trouble!

Superhatch 03-31-2013 12:16 PM

Sorry this happened man. I've had 2 cars stolen in the past and was hoping this stuff was behind me when I moved to a Subaru.

I'm making an uninformed assumption here, but would the keyless start feature on the BRZ make it harder to steal the car by starting it and driving it away?

TouchMyHonda 03-31-2013 05:08 PM

Just a quick update I have been waiting on a new regulator to come in which i just picked up from the dealer so the new window should be in and working today. Then I have to get it retinted.

That's why you make sure they end up in the hospital. They don't mind running from the cops, but they sure as hell don't want to find an angry owner.

Sorry to hear about the car, window tint and a car alarm helped after my last car was broken into.
