Edit: Listening to the video in the first thread does sound like an exhaust leak there. Probably header to overpipe or overpipe to frontpipe.

Sounds like that’s what it could be after all. I found a clip of one that sounds nearly identical a few minutes ago. Thank you for the reply

Your car has some cool mods on it, it just needs some TLC.

It would be ideal if there was a Subaru specialty shop local to you that you could take it to!

I have an appointment set for next week! I do love the exhaust system on the vehicle, it sounds great for the most part. Wish I could say I chose it lol

This is the part list sent from the previous owner
- Mishimoto performance intake
- FT86 Speedfactory unequal length catted headers
- Tanabe over pipe
- Hooker Blackheart front pipe
- Corsa Performance catback exhaust
- ACT XT Street Performance Clutch with Lightweight Flywheel
- MTEC stainless steel clutch line
- Fumoto quick oil change drain plug

Clipdat 05-05-2023 11:24 PM

Pretty cool, I bet that exhaust is loud but has a satisfying UEL Subaru rumble.

Only thing I would do is remove the intake and go back to a stock intake or a TRD intake.

What kind of tune is on the car currently?

I eventually want to replace the intake with a stock one. If I have time after the dealership maybe I can hit up a scrap yard and see if I can find a salvage in good condition. As for the tune, I honestly have no idea. I assume it's a stock tune. The previous owner didn't strike me as someone who went too into modding and just stuck with external bits

Clipdat 05-06-2023 12:27 AM

Cool, sounds like you have a plan!

The only reason I ask about the tune is because with these cars if you just install a cold air intake and/or a header, you aren't going to be even able to fully take advantage of what performance these parts actually bring without a tune of some sort.

Especially the intake that's on there, if there's no tune it will actually run worse with it on there versus a stock intake.

Any recommended paths for tuning? I don't know the process of using an OFT
:iono:

Clipdat 05-06-2023 01:05 AM

OFT is extraordinarily easy to use, can't really mess it up. Plenty of threads to search through here about it.

But yeah even if you do decide to tune, I would still ditch the CAI that's on there and go back to good old stock + some kind of drop in filter.

DigitalFootprint 05-06-2023 01:10 AM

Sounds like something to look into! I always assumed tuning was very complicated (I’m sure it is in some cases) but just off the bat from looking into it, the OFT seems like an easy system to use. I’ll look into buying one in the near future! Thank you taking the time to reply!

It might still be there.

That does sound pretty horrible. My guess is tuning issue and it exhaust leak(s)

Hopefully it was a quick fix at the place he took it, and now he's back out on the open road enjoying his ride! :D

Didn’t think this thread had any activity.
Update: everything is working great. Vehicle had an engine out service. Warranty fucked me over, but we live and we learn. I was able to bring the price down by doing the j02 recall. I was torn with the decision but my service contact Dennis at Toyota was great. He was knowledgeable about the platform and was super helpful.
I’ve put about 500miles on the vehicle since the recall. I’m aware that I’m still not in the clear. No issues, next oil change I’m pulling the pan for inspections and sending oil samples out.
Idle is fixed. I suspect them flashing the ECU fixed it. A/C noise is gone. There still is a rattle that i originally thought was coming from the transmission, but it is in fact due to a weld snap on the exhaust in a place where I wouldn’t have seen it. Clutch was returned to stock, throw out bearing replaced.
Air intake was returned to stock.
Timing cover got the reseal, as of now, there hasn’t been any oil leakage. That’s not to say it won’t come back, but time will tell.

As for the state of this thread, I want to issue and apology to Ultramaroon for how things played out especially with the totally untubular replies.

Clipdat 08-03-2023 04:34 PM

Good lord almighty. Sounds like it damn near had a heart transplant.

What's a "weld snap on the exhaust"?

Pretty much aha. Fortunately, it all got taken care of in one go when everything was already out. Regarding the welding question, the weld simply failed. I'm not familiar with welding, but there's a small 1-2 inch cut along the weld bead. I'll be getting it repaired very soon.

Clipdat 08-03-2023 04:52 PM

Ah ok, a failed weld. That sucks. On what part of the exhaust was it on?

I promise that I'm a pretty decent guy. The same IRL as here. ;)

If you want to, go for it! But don't apologize for "how things played out." Trust me. Humility is wonderfully cleansing for the soul. It's harder to say "I apologize for XYZ" than it is for expressing the desire to do so.

I'm super happy for you either way! Remember how I suspected that the cracked header may have caused the leak by heating and distorting a sealed joint? Look carefully at where the flaming hot exhaust is directed. Is it torching anything?

Thanks man,

If I recall correctly, it’s not torching anything. It just looks like it failed, maybe due to pressure build up or something. :iono:

Poorly executed weld cracking at the weak point after a number of heat cycles and vibration. Both are cyclic loads work-hardening the material. Happens with unproven aftermarket stuff. "upgrades" lol

True, I’m looking around for a reputable shop that’ll weld it back up. Most estimates have been around $250. I’ll be pulling the plug and getting it done in the next few days
