You are partially correct. The international standards say the speedo can never show below actual speed when tested, but can show as much as 110% of actual speed. So, in theory, it would never cause you to speed.

Now, that is with standard tires, etc, etc.

I think if you go have it tested and it shows it was inaccurate, then you can use that in court, but its very unlikely it will be in your favor.

This is how my lotus is. Drives me crazy. 80 on the Speedo is actually 74.

They even tell you that in the manual.

Not the correct answer!

First (and so far only) speeding ticket was when I was driving my college buddies miata on some back roads. I was going about 80 but on the straight aways. I was also playing chicken with other cars. Yeah... I was a bad person. :/

It was shortly after my military service so I still thought I was invincible. Lol

Doesn't Virginia have the WORST speeding laws in the country?

Roannoake area is pretty uptight about their speed limits. One of the car mags had a feature article about a speeding ticket that lead to a several day stretch in the county pokey for one of their correspondents.

Slow down and enjoy the scenery. It's outstanding!

He said he clocked me at 65 in a 60, and I said, "You're seriously stopping me for going 5 over?" That's when he told me it was really 3 over but was still a ticket.

I dealt with cops on a daily basis in my prior career in TV news, so I know there's really no point in arguing when one of them decides to go stupid. I just shrugged and said, "Okay," and he didn't seem to know what to do. He just stood there staring at me for a moment, waiting for me to argue. When I didn't, he stammered a little and asked me why I was out there, and we ended up chatting for a while about my weird job. Then he came back with a warning instead of a ticket.

One thing I didn't mention is that the rental I was driving had "foreign" plates from New Mexico. Like I said above, I think he was bored out in the High Plains, saw a foreigner in his territory and just wanted something to do in the off chance that I might be smuggling hipsters from Taos to Austin in the trunk. There's probably only so much staring at the landscape in the Panhandle one can take before things start to get weird.

New Mexico plates?

He thought you were an illegal immigrant.

I've surprisingly never had a speeding ticket in this car and I've had it for over one year.

I did almost get an exhaust ticket though, even though it's not that loud.

Celica00 08-21-2018 11:07 PM

Caught entering the freeway at 80 mph in a 55 mph construction zone. I noticed the cop caught me and was attempting to get behind me to pull me over, but he was a about 4 cars behind me, so I decided to try to outrun him.

Ended up bobbing and weaving through fairly dense traffic at around 110 mph and the cop caught up to me when there was a break in traffic.

So... 110 mph in a 55 mph construction zone. Got off with only 10 over. Never been that stupid since.

No actually tickets for me yet. Just 2 warnings one for doing 72 in a 60 and no front plate(yay Minnesota). Was on my way out of town to meet up with family. Sister had her baby that weekend. Drive this highway everyday to work 70+ never seen cop but today was Saturday so go figure. Thought I was for sure getting a ticket cause I was doing about 80 before I saw him. Officer kindly let me know when he was giving my warnings that he got me doing 72 with his rear radar. Felt sorta lucky and drove the speed limit til I hit North Dakota.

Don't see how. he's been dead for 5 years. Remember him getting burned one time for 180 in a 100. Used to drive with the dash lights off so mom couldn't see how fast he was going. Step mother used to try to outrun the cops in her '71 camaro ss. Used to have a couple of Karmin-gias back in those days. Some nasty right-offs while racing on the back roads in New Brunswick.

86MLR 08-26-2018 03:40 AM

150kph in 60kph zone, fail to stop, fail to take corner in prescribed manner, fail to indicate, fail to stop at red light, negligent driving, all in my old 1275 Leyland Mini.

Ended up boxed in by about 6 cop cars.

I was 17, after the subsequent belting, fines and loss of license, I drove much more sensible on the street.

My brother introduced me to some of his motorsport mates, I've saved my speed for the track or strip ever since.

I'm 53 now and haven't been booked for speeding since then.

Disclaimer: I do drive just under 10% faster than the limit everywhere I go though, except school zones, never been caught by a camera or mobile cop car.

It was a good lesson though, I hate to recall how many friends and associates aren't around today because of high speed crashes on the street.

Riftur 08-26-2018 09:47 AM

Amazingly, I have not gotten a speeding ticket in this car. In all my previous cars I have. The biggest difference now with my car is I donate to the police and have the donation sticker and badge on my car's license plate, which has helped for sure.

When I worked in TV I was around cops a lot, and they would joke about people putting PBA and "thin blue line" stickers on their cars and thinking it would get them out of tickets. I remember this one guy mimicking somebody he stopped in a high pitched voice, "But didn't you see my sticker? I thought you guys didn't give tickets to police supporters!" In the case of the police support organizations, they'll happily accept your money and still laugh at you.

My worst was in Portland at 3 am driving from Seattle to the northern most CA DMV to replace my lost license. 30 over in a 55 without realizing what the speed limit was. Luckily he didn't cite me for the missing license and through the power of traffic school it was removed.

I'd like to think I'm smarter now than at 20...

Ah... this got caught in the clutter. This explains why it's 4 times, it's not only automated process but supposedly no repercussions?

You sure it's not on your driving record? Have you done a check? Or have you not yet noticed any difference in premiums attributed to driving record?

This also proves the point that it's not about enforcing laws it's just about the money, otherwise people would've had there licenses taken away at this point and they would've actually assigned points.

For most people the fines alone should make them think. Apparently some just figure it is a racing tax and are willing to pay.

Not directed at T, but at those who figure the above is a license to drive like idiots...

If the only thing being endangered was the speeding/reckless driver's wallet and health, I wouldn't care. However, I'm not willing to pay someone's racing tax with my or my loved ones' health or lives...and I love a LOT of people.

There is no excuse for high speed driving on public roads. None. O.P., sounds like you had some awful examples in your youth. Do better..that's what each generation aspires to do, isn't it?

Got a ticket in Ohio while driving 76 in a 70 in an RV. Talk about no tolerance. Ohio Troopers are not lenient at all.

Borchert97 08-28-2018 04:15 AM

I have a 90 in a 65 in Montana.

A 78 in a 60 in Washington that the cop reduced to a 60.

ANOTHER 78 in a 60 in Washington that the cop reduced to 70 in a 60. He also let me off for being on my phone for directions with a warning.

I think those are my only speeding tickets in this car.

woojukim116 08-30-2018 11:04 PM

Got one ticket on my frs 2yrs ago doing 81 in 70 mph on I-95. I am pretty sure everyone else was going same or faster-lol
Fortunately, he didn't give me reckless ticket.
Officer asked me to roll my window down to measure tint darkness (I had 50-VA legal)

I WOULDN'T CRUSE IN THE FIRST (LEFT) LANE.

Dadhawk 08-31-2018 08:40 AM

I usually don't get speeding tickets but when I do they are of the "really?" variety.

Worst one was for going 38 in a 35MPH zone on a motorcycle. Fortunately the judge had me only pay court costs on it.

OMG, what an experience...
State Trooper passed me on other side of median divided road, drove quarter mile out of his way to make a u-turn, ran me down a half mile later, and the conversation was this:
ST-may i see your license?
me-yes sir, here it is
ST-this your car?
me-yes, sir
ST-you own it?
me-yes sir
officer then went back to his patrol car to do the call-it-in thingy, then came back
ST-you have insurance?
me-yes sir
ST-may i see it?
me-yes sir, here it is
ST-okay, giving you a warning for no front license plate, it's required by law
I WAS TRAUMATIZED FOR TWO WEEKS WAITING FOR MY FRONT PLATE KIT TO COME IN, lol

155 in a 35... In Memphis Tennessee 2005

I was 26 years old. Just bought a brand new bmw z4 and was traveling for business out with a cheerleader for the memphis grizzlies. She wanted to know the top speed...

There was a new road that had just been made and no one traveled it, so i thought it as safe a place as any to show her.

Soon as we hit it, I saw the reflection of a cop car in the distance. Just pulled over to the side of the road and waited for him to come my way - I'm not one for turning a speeding ticket into a prison sentence. He calmly said... "155 in a 35, what drugs have you been taking?" I said, "none sir, just this girl here wanted to know the top speed of the car. No one is using this road, so I thought it the safest place to show her" He wrote me a ticket and let me go on my way.

When I went to call the number on the ticket and inquire my court date/fine, I was informed that there was no record of that ticket. Gotta love the south.
