I don't see the 2.4 coming because they've already developed the FB25. If they drop the FB25 I think it's possible, but they are trying to simplify the product stack with fewer engines/a more comprehensive platform. Unless one is mega overbuilt for high boost, and the other is built totally different for efficiency, I think they'd avoid two similar displacement shortblocks, again unless it's another advancement.

If they've done a 2.5 then you are right, no need for a 2.4. Still they only need 2 engines at most.

Guys, there IS a 2.4l coming. We said it at the NYIAS with the reveal of the Viziv 7 concept. I won't tell ya hp/tq specs. But yes, there is a 2.4l in the Ascent.

I am always pessimistic (the internet has jaded me) but as you are a reliable source I will have to accept that.

Like I said before that is what I get for trying to apply logic to the auto industry. I should have known better after all these years.

Are you able to tell us if it's slated to replace the FB25, or if they will coexist?

nikitopo 11-24-2017 08:43 AM

I would expect that all the bigger NA engines will be replaced by smaller displacement turbo variants. Subaru is known to be a conservative brand. What others were doing the last 5-10 years, Subaru will start doing now. Just think how many years took them to design a DI turbo engine. In some ways they are trying to improve, but they are still not there. When I am reading that Subaru will be a game changer, I am just laughing. You don't buy a Subaru to be on the edge of technology...

As of now, the only knowledge I have is it's for the Ascent. I could totally see variants of it replacing the H6 in the Legacy and Outback, and maybe a variation making it into the next STI, but who knows. That's only speculation on my part.

We're working on that. Slowly but surely. The Ascent will have some cool tech, as well as the next gen Forester.

Forester xt with a manual please. Old tech is good too.

Wouldn't that be nice? Unfortunately the take rate on XT's is incredibly low as it is, let alone if it were offered in a manual. I was genuinely surprised they even offered the new Crosstrek in a manual given that less than 1% of first gen Crosstreks were manuals.

Then you get the crazies on FB who comment on Subaru posts with "I want a 8.0L 4-cylinder quad-turbo diesel Baja with a manual transmission or I'm never buying another Subaru again!!!!" It's all a numbers game. If they won't sell many of them, it's not worth tooling a production line to make it.

I don’t know how different the right hand drive and left hand drive parts would be, but they sell more manuals in other markets, so it could be just a matter of making it work on a US assembly line or passing US crash tests with the manual.

Also they improved the manual too, going to a six speed and other associated modifications. The XT is already the performance engine for the Forester, so why not just throw a manual in there too?

To put it simply: not enough people would buy one to cover the cost of making the parts and tooling the line to build them.

Dude it is not that simple. There is far more going on behind the scenes in the car manufacturing business than you can imagine. I have been at it for almost 30 years now and it still boggles my mind. Just because .0000000002% of the car purchasing world want that one very specific vehicle does not mean they can just simply build it.

Ascent reveal is tonight at 6:30pm PST.

Th3rdSun 11-28-2017 05:24 PM

oh joy,another suv.

Guff 11-28-2017 11:48 PM

Not gonna lie, I want one. Love me a good SUV! My brother had a 2017 Mazda CX-9 and it was seriously such a nice drive. Subaru benchmarked that car for the dynamics on the Ascent so I have high hopes. The interior on the top-spec CX-9 was seriously unbeatable though; all aluminum, napa leather, and rose wood. Absolutely shit on anything else from Japan and even Germany. So if the Ascent can compare to that, it'll be a home run for sure.

I'll be patiently waiting for people to start pushing that 2.4l to see what breaks first. Also, inb4 Subaru puts it in the next STi. It is the next logical step of course.

Irace86.2.0 11-29-2017 12:08 AM

Eyesight is standard. Thats nice.

trippinbillies40 11-29-2017 08:10 AM

Happy you guys like it. And yes, it drives EXTREMELY nicely. If you liked how a CX9 drove, you'll fall in love with this car. We didn't benchmark their car. We reset the benchmark. Honestly, all new SGP cars are such a huge step up from the older models.

unhappymeal 11-29-2017 08:40 AM

Subaru is going to sell shit loads of these, which I am all for. Maybe we'll fine get bat shit crazy engine in the STi and a next generation BRZ.

mazeroni 11-29-2017 08:50 AM

"Codenamed TR8, the Ascent was developed in Japan but will be built at Subaru’s plant in Lafayette, Indiana. All 60,000 annual units are for North America; the plant can build more if needed."

Isn't the Lafayette plant already operating at something like 120%? Are they really able to accommodate more vehicles? OR did they expand recently and I didn't see it in the news.

But yea, given people's love for all things Subaru and extremely cheap gas, if they don't blow through 100k a year at some point in the future I would be surprised.

Wait till they turn the next WRX STI into an SUV to compete with Nissan and Mitsubshi.

S0crates 11-29-2017 04:25 PM

Until recently I owned both a 95 240SX and a Bugeye WRX. Although most people ditch the KA24DE for an imported SR20DET or other engine option, I chose to stick with the KA. For daily driving, a KA24DE with headers and exhaust is an absolute riot. The 240SX was MORE fun to drive than the WRX, even with half the power. Much of the reason was the smaller, RWD nature of the 240SX, but the responsiveness and torque of a higher displacement, NA engine certainly helped.

I am in the market for a new car and would love to buy a modern 240SX. The closest thing I have found is the GT86 platform. However, I have come to terms with the fact that the stock power train of the GT86 leaves much to be desired, at least for me.

With Subaru having developed a new 2.4L turbo-charged engine for the Ascent, it stands to reason they could put the 2.4l naturally-aspirated engine into the BRZ/86. This change would likely bring the torque numbers up quite a bit and possibly eliminate the torque dip altogether. For me, this is much better than having to install an aftermarket header or SC kit.

Please Subaru, if you are listening, bring a 240BRZ to market.

Dude, have you ever driven a GT86? There is no way that stock for stock a K24 240sx is faster. Straight line or a track.

S0crates 11-29-2017 04:38 PM

I didn't say the KA24DE was faster, I said it was more fun to drive than the WRX.

And yes, I have driven a GT86 on 3 occasions. 2 NA and 1 SC.

Then save yourself 25 grand and buy a 240sx. They are a dime a dozen on craigslist.

S0crates 11-29-2017 04:51 PM

I could buy a 240SX, but I sold mine because it was getting old and I want something newer. But honestly, I would prefer to buy a BRZ with an FA24. :-)

Can you blame me for having hopes and dreams?

ermax 11-29-2017 05:03 PM

FRS/BRZ owners are funny with their hatred of power. This is a unique batch of people who think a car is worse with more power. Mind boggling. People who are wishing for more power obviously aren't requesting a boat anchor that has more power but totally breaks everything else that is good about the car. Funny people have no problem doing bolt-ons for extra power but despise the thought of Toyota/Subaru adding more power from the factory.

Not at all, but you said you needed a car now. You could be waiting awhile for this FA24 FT86 (and that's IF). The current platform probably improves on every thing a stock KA24DE 240sx does, and then some. So, I vote buy one of these, or one of the other affordable lightweight RWD cars on the market... Miata? Oh, that's less power. Nevermind lol.

We are actually being realistic. Subaru has said many many times they are not adding more power in this generation of the vehicle. Why people find that statement hard to understand is mind boggling.

They've also mentioned they are playing with electric superchargers and other things for the next gen, if it happens. So there is a chance an all new BRZ/86 might have more power.

I doubt it will be this engine though, because I'd bet money it is still a bottom mount turbo for some insane reason, and therefor would jack up the engine too high.

The people here constantly complaining about factory power output and price don't care for things like low hoodline and driving position or high rev range and great handling, like some of us here do in an enthusiastic way. I guess that makes us hardcore. :bonk:

I know cuz my office is redneck country.

I want more power but also care about all the things you mention. I wouldn't call our current engine a high rever though.

There are plenty of NA 4 cylinders out there making more than 200hp. But they aren't boxers so they would end up changing the CG. Surely Subi can make more than 205 with a boxer without FI. But even if they did go FI, I doubt the extra weight would throw off the handling that bad. Not bad enough that the extra power wouldn't compensate and still end up producing better lap times.

I just don't subscribe to the more power = worse handling argument. I'm not looking for a 300HP car that would need a bunch of extra work to go with it. I think the car would be perfect with 250HP. Hell 220 would even be great.

Naturally aspirated, 100hp per liter is pretty darn good. It is definitely not common. Even most 2.4L 4-cylinders are not pushing over 200hp or revving as high.

Yep. 5L NA Mustang is 87 HP/L @ $33k and Camaro 6.2L NA is 73.4 HP/L @ $38k. What the twins do with their NA 2L is impressive. 2017 BRZ is 102.5 HP/L. For a comparison the 2017 Corvette z06 6.2L Supercharged engine makes 104 HP/L. MSRP: From $79,450.

ermax 12-01-2017 06:35 AM

Oh come on. F20C, K20, B18C5. You cant only compare our engine to American 4 cylinders. The F20C is 120hp/l.

K20A:
http://www.k20a.org/chameleon/dynoch...4-2-1_dyno.jpg

The biggest advantage of the K20A over ours is that flat torque curve from about 4500 to 7500. It exceeds our peek HP from 7000 all the way to 8000. It has a full cut at 8500RPM. For sure the FA20 has more torque below 4000 though. But the problem with our engine is it gives you all this toque and then says, "haha.. I tricked you, now let me have that torque back for a while".

How about this... leave the power output alone and fix that damn torque dip!
