Vin 550 and chirping away

Don't have mine yet, and am starting to get a little scared about all these annoying noises threads. How loud is this chirping? Can it be drowned out with music? Is it something you have brought up to your service dept?

I called Subaru of America and reported it and am taking my car in this Friday. It seems to get louder now I can hear it over music but I don't listen to music very loud.

Went out driving, started the car, no chirping, drove for around 5 miles chirping started. Parked for 40 minutes, started back up, still chirping. I opened the hood and listen for the source of the sound. It's definitely coming from the right side of the engine (if you stand in front of the car) where the direction inject is. the other side of the engine where the other direction injectors only had the click and ticking noise of a what's known as normal DI sound. As I rev the engine slowly up to 2K rpm in neutral the chirp speeds up and faint away.

Now that I read this post and had a chance to listen for this sound, it is there. I can only hear it when I'm driving next to park cars or a wall to reflect the sound back to me. Definitely can't hear it with the windows up or the radio on. I'm not worried about it. BTW to find where the noise is coming from you can use a screwdriver as a stethoscope. Press the metal part against different parts of the engine and press your ear to the handle and it will transmit the noises. You might also find pressing the screwdriver in the region of the noises stops it.

Can you go into a bit more detail? Does it constantly make this noise? Just when you're moving? Just when you're pushing the car hard?

This weekend I drove around Mt. Rainier, and noticed a sort of high pitched whistle noise that I only really noticed as I started to easy off/on to the accelerator (perhaps it makes it all of the time, but the engine noise overpowers it). For anyone who has a newer motorcycle, it sounds very much like the high pitch 1 second whine that my GSX-R makes as I turn the key on (I assume something to do with the fuel system, like an auto-choke/auto-fuel valve), but before I even press the engine start button.

I assume you *don't* mean this noise, correct?

It quite literally sounds like a cricket. I can hear it at low rpms in 1st and 2nd, then it goes silent. However, it stays constant when idling at a light in neutral. It's not annoying or anything, just disconcerting.

I've tried pushing it "hard" (relative as I'm still in break-in period) but, the sound persists. Doesn't seem like the manner in which it is driven has any affect on the sound.

Can we get a youtube video of this please?

DeepHunta 06-26-2012 11:28 PM

I think I got the chirp noise too. I'm 550 miles. I listen to really loud music (heheh, I'm immature), so I don't hear it on my drive. But I heard it just before I turned off my engine in the garage today.

I'll try and record it tomorrow when I get home after work. It's really loud in the garage. If it is something to worry about, I might bring it in service this saturday. I get free service for 3 years and I'm sure the 3 year bumper to bumper warranty will cover any repairs if need be.

My wife said my car idles like an old VW bug. She joked I should take it to VW for service...

Considering how widespread the cars are with the sound, I'm thinking Subaru is right is that it's a byproduct of the high pressure direct injector system and not a batch of bad tensioners.

The noise is not coming from the tensioner. It's coming from the DI on the right side of the engine.
