Its a simple very minimalist way of keeping an eye on temps specially oil and water for those who run their cars. I know all the other stuff is great but maybe a gauge would be better suited for those 0-60, boost vacuum...

I agree. I had another project that ran into feature creep and became a mess.

A lot of the motivation for this was doing a track day and having to use/mount my phone to get the oil temp.

Definitely cool as hell. Put me on the list if you decide to make more and sell them.

100% serious.

I'm there too.

So it's been in my car for a little bit now and I have to say things are working pretty well.

I still have a few issues to work out and things I'd like to develop but they are relatively minor:
-I want go get the warning function working properly.
-The enclosure I'm using is a hack and could be done neater
-I now have a conceptual solution for how to do the buttons right. I just have to try it.
-I have to figure out a proper way to color it amber or red.

I'm still 50/50 on making some for people. My wife and I will be having our second child at the end of next month and I know that will swipe most of my time. Also I pm'd a mod about doing a group buy just to see how expensive it is. I haven't heard back yet.

Oh and visibility isn't as awesome as I wanted with the particular polarized lenses I have only glasses. It is till better at sunlight glare then the headunit and you can still read everything with the polarized lenses on though.

Id love to buy what you've got so far. Im terrible with programming and stuff like that, no idea where to even start if I bought all these parts, but I am good with hacking up the clock and making the buttons work type of things. Good with wiring too.

If you could either sell me one as is or write out a detailed step by step I would be very grateful.

First off, congratulations to you and your wife! You're right about free time disappearing... once we had our second kid, that was pretty much the end of my hobbies for a while :D (but it's well worth it)

Anyway, nice job with this. If a group buy happens, I'm interested. A couple questions:

A. Do you think this'd work with a[ame="http://www.amazon.com/OBDII-Splitter-J1962M-2-J1962F-145802/dp/B000TMCX72"] OBD II splitter[/ame] so that a [ame="http://www.amazon.com/BAFX-Products-Bluetooth-diagnostics-Android/dp/B005NLQAHS"]bluetooth adapter[/ame] could also be used?

B: Regarding FAQ #5, have you by chance measured power drain while sleeping? My car typically sits for days at a time (sometimes a week or more) and I'm wondering if that'd be an issue.

It shouldn't. The OBD II board's chip has a cool "sleep" feature that goes to ultra low power draw if it isn't being queried for anything. The board that drives it (the arduino) only powers on when the car is powered on (it's plugged into a usb cig lighter adapter right now).

Obviously you already saw these, but posting for other readers (from the sparkfun comments):

1. OBD II splitter - yeah sure...I think. 1 at a time should work. Both at the same time might now (since I don't really filter the returns in my code...I just read what comes back next.)

2. I have not tested the sleep mode yet. It is on the todo list.

Yosh! Somebody did it. I really like how it turned out. The OLED screen fits perfectly too. I'm assuming this is the smallest screen from adafruit? Congrats on the project. Mine has been delayed, lol.

Sarlacc 10-16-2014 12:06 PM

Man, that's a good idea well executed!
I am very tempted to try this.
I'd like to do a RGB LED display that shows a clock with red digits as default.

The issue is that there aren't a lot of displays that fit that tiny space. Check the dimensions of that Oled display. Even it is a tight fit.

Edit 23 mm height is about 1 mm too tall so it wedges in there.

Yeah, I tried a few vendors and the full color displays out there obviously won't fit. Your display looks like the best choice.
I'd still want a default clock mode, though :-)

robot 10-16-2014 12:19 PM

You would have to get a timer crystal and a constant (batt) power source (or use a battery).

robot 10-16-2014 12:20 PM

Also in other news I still haven't decided to produce them or not. I did find out forum rules require them to be sold via a vendor. I haven't contacted any about doing that yet because I'm not 100% sure I want to do it or not.
