I had been listening to the crickets for 18 months since I got my FR-S. I realize it's not a reliability issue, but it is a minor annoyance. I decided to get the pump replaced last month, which was done for free. Now I've driven 1000 miles without a hint of crickets (still using the same Shell premium as before). The dealer said the new pump is different and I'm inclined to believe him...

My friend was like.... Why does your FRS sound like a old car?

I notice I get chrip when the needle is almost at E, but I get no chirp when the needle is above the 1/4 mark. The car is warm before it chirps. Shell Vpower 93

"Crickets" are normal for a high pressure fuel pump. That's why Ford and GM wrap their pumps in a foam sound insulator. It's strictly an NVH issue. Don't worry about it.

So when can you guys here crickets. Inside the car? Windows up? down? driving on free way or is it just outside the car when at a stand still.

Also any idea if the newer ones have crickets as well?

Only when stationary and engine at idle, the second you rev it they disappear whether you're moving or not.

Severity varies but at it's worst definitely noticeable windows up radio off or windows down radio low. Louder if you stick your head under the hood/bonnet.

Yes new, owners are reporting crickets:

They will come back...........eventually.

Mine was replaced two months ago and after 2500 miles it returned, went away and then came back completely. Dealer said the same thing about it being different but thanks to the cricket thread i knew they would come back. It was nice while it lasted :P

Are either of these safe for the catalytic converter?

Phosphorus is what kills cats by bonding with the catalyst. That's why the EPA forced a reduction of ZDDP in motor oils in the US.

Even if ashless two stroke oil were high in phosphorus (which I don't think it is), a capful of it in your gas tank wouldn't put enough phosphorus into the exhaust to have any effect at all on the cat.

I bought a 2014 FR-S on March 1st this year, I have the crickets.

Hope this helps.

I just got my 2014 FRS about 3 weeks ago. Manufacture date was march 2014. I have the crickets too...

I went to the dealer and they said the cricket noise was a normal noise caused by the fuel pump and didn't replace anything :(

I think Toyota will be using this as a marketing ploy!
A FREE lifetime supply of crickets with every purchase!
Use them as food for your reptile friends or just cart them along in your brand new FR-S and listen to the sweet sounds of nature at every red light!
:confused0068:
Unfortunately I think they are here to stay. 22,000 miles and three fuel pumps later, chirp, chirp, chirp!

I have a 2014 BRZ limited that I have owned for less than a month(1.7k miles) and It has crickets.

Sounds like a terrible disease or a STD... but for your car
