That's your dealership's service policy. The one I bought from offered a similar deal, but they're in another state so it's not of much use to me.
My local dealer suggested I follow the service schedule published by Subaru (starting at 7500) but said if I wanted to do it earlier, 3000 would be fine. They actually suggested I don't do it too soon.
I ended up doing mine yesterday at 3600. First time I did an oil change with 0W20 oil. damn I was not ready for how fast that stuff drains. Stuff ended up all over the place as my drain pan's funnel filled up faster than the air could escape the container! At least now I have a Fumoto valve with the hose extension. Next one should be much more manageable.
