Most dealerships sublet windshield and rear glass replacement. It is very rare any more that dealers do this because of the new space age sealers and the tools needed to do it. When you replace several windshields a day, an outside vendor is more economical than a dealer having to buy all the equipment and maybe replacing one or two a month.

What makes you think SafeLite is a franchise?

Yeah, if you don't want to do it then let the dealer handle it. They will sub it out to their glass guy who probably does nothing but glass all day every day. Nothing to worry about.

I have had the exact same crack on my car. Due to insurance it was a free repair.

The only reason I am posting is at how similar it is to the one I had:

That's how the guy that replaced my window explained it to me. Seems like I may be wrong here. I wonder why there is such a large disparity between windshield replacements from the same company?

I looked all over their website, and online in general, and found nothing about SafeLite being a franchise.

Their whole operation is based around the fact that they manufacturer their own glass and make it cheaper than OEM and/or OE glass. They're popular with insurers for this reason. But their quality leaves a lot to be desired.

Last year when a guy damaged my windshield (errant golf ball) and his insurer tried to give me a SafeLite replacement, I became more familiar with this than I ever cared to be...

Point is: Stick with OEM glass if you can afford it. Better quality control.

Don't know about you guys but if this happens to my FRS, Toyota is payin, sure looks like a design flaw that could be costly for them to fix, too much body flexing.

Mine actually cracked when it was parked in the garage. It was a hot day here (it's summer now) and I had a stone chip the top part. Parked in the garage came back in 5 min's and I came back to the massive crack.

Body flex has nothing to do with it in my case, but the windscreen does seem more fragile than other car's I have owned. I have had some fairly bad stone chips but none have caused my screen to ever crack.

Wow those are really similar and especially in the same spots... I had seem other people post their cracks and it's exactly the same... I am starting to believe it is a design flaw because yes... this windshield does seem very very soft and prone to cracks/chips easily... I had driven my M3 to 175mph and I have a ton of small small chips but it is still solid. You guys are lucky with insurance... mine refuse to cover unless it is over my 1000 deductible.

Glass cover is usually free or very cheap add on to insurance here in New Zealand. It's still a pain that the glass is so weak.

Mine was OptiCoated as well so now I have to get it re coated :(

On my Legacy I went through 2 windshields. Got Safelite twice and both were excellent quality(I drove around 70 miles a day on the interstate and rocks were abundant so I got hit quite often :(.

Derik210 04-26-2013 11:21 AM

So no one got that window Warranty when they got there car?

jfranc0592 05-25-2013 01:56 PM

I got the window warranty and my windshield cracked while i was in phoenix, crack is too large for insurance to cover so I called the dealership they said it was too big as well and it goes across a little less than half the windshield so warranty is basically pointless.

spdfreak 06-13-2013 11:27 PM

These windscreens are most definitely weak. I didn't even notice the pebble that hit me this weekend on the highway. Just noticed the line developing from the edge inward.

Only 3000 miles on the car and it needs surgery :(
I went 83k on the OE windscreen on my ms6.

So safelite is the way to go?
