Kyle's car was an autocross car for years at 7800-8000 RPM rev limit depending on the event... Doesn't help the rockers, even being a 2016

I just picked up a baffled pan for my car, I'm not sure an accusump is in my future or not. I'll need to work on an oil pressure logging solution in the near term though. I don't think the oiling suffers *that* much from having more load. There's already a lot of load on the rods just from G-force.

How concerned should one be about the internals for a tracked FI gt86 making 250-300hp ?

If I am not mistaken oil starvation is a bigger worry than say rods/pistons. On the topic of oil I was hearing some mixed opinions on the effectiveness of a baffle plate and pickup tube.

Would one need something like a accusump at minimum ? Any reason to get accusump baffle plate and pickup tube ? Is there any "real" fix outside of a proper dry sump setup

PS I know there will be other supporting mods needed for cooling and what not just specifically wondering about the internals and oil at the moment

Cooling is key. If you have all the right supporting mods, I wouldn't worry any more than a stock engine.

What would those supporting mods be ? :-)

Literally everything you can do to shield/guide/trap/reflect/insulate heat, and increase cooling by at least proportional to the amount of power you add.

Search for my other posts to see what I did.

It's not super common and NA cars are not immune to it either. Valvetrain was updated in 14' FYI but can still happen.

Lash too tight and the engine throws a MIL.

A smidge loose and shit starts bouncing around.

Sweet spot is +/- 0.0002 in :/

To add to the cooling stuff, I’ve read that the Toyota team participating in enduros in europe try to keep their oil temps below 115c. Wouldnt hurt to aim for that I reckon. Also I happen to have handy a parts list that @CSG_Mike posted a few years ago when a similar discussion took place, so I will just chuck it here for convenience to give you an idea of what to look at, keeping in mind this is an older post.

“ Powertrain:
4700 GReddy turbo kit
950 JDL intercooler upgrade
990 GReddy oil cooler
870 CSG ceramic on all new piping
Thermal dispersant (coating for intercooler, oil cooler?)
200 DEI wrap on all new exhaust piping area
200 DEI turbo blanket on turbo
45 Cool tape on all line-of-sight plastic surfaces
180 reflective thermal wrap on all line-of-sight lines and wiring
200 CSG fan shroud
450 CSG SPAL fan setup w/ relay
330 Trackspec hood louvers
99 JR MAP sensor
745 DT ff kit w/ MK1+ upgrade
350 Injectors
190 Fuel pump
400 custom shrouding (material cost only)”

that is very helpful thank you so much ! Even in stock trim with the added OEM style oil cooler I was seeing temps higher then 115c haha. Highest I ever saw was 123

DocWalt 08-10-2023 09:21 AM

Yeah, the OEM style cooler isn't really adequate. It's wayyyyy better than not having one, but yeah...

@M0nk3y has had great success keeping his car cool on track even with FI with a fairly basic cooling setup. Hood vents, JR dual cooler, ACE ducting.

The JR dual is the rad/oil cooler combo yeah. I like the idea of hood vents but worry about the rain since my car just sits in my driveway for weeks on end in rainy Ireland

Even being in a garage I'm going to design some covers for my hood vent to direct the water away from sensitive electronics

I've had an open hood duct in the PNW for 5-6 years now. The only thing I noticed from it is the idler pulley failed early.

Good to know!

This is what I was wondering. It's going to need a lot of cooling.

I have AC removed, vented hood, high pressure cooling system, aux coolers, etc and my EOC gets to about 240, 245 if it's really hot out. Now you're adding 30% more power, an FI system and intercoolers in front of the radiator/EOC.

I'd imagine you'll start needing coolers for the trans and diff at some point too.

FI and road racing don't mix well. There's a reason that even Porsche doesn't do it. They not only "dont" do it, they take a FI car and take the FI off of it for the track variants. Corvette tried and failed miserably with the C7 Z06 and is kinda sorta fine with the ZR1 (with a lot more frontal cooling area). I'm sure there are some, but I can't think of any true track worthy cars that are FI from the factory.

But it's definitely a problem money solves.

This is Barber Motorsports Park - this is Alabama Heat, lap was done in 90F+ weather (as witnesses by the IATs I was seeing).

If you do it right it's really not that complicated. FWIW this is cooler oil temps than what I ran NA
