a while back i wanted to do the same thing. but ended up buying a AVO kit. But as they do it, they mill down the mating side of the pump. they also enlarged the input thread of the pump too actually. i think it was a total of 4-5mm off the face.

EDIT:

ok! it was enough so that the face that the bolt goes into holding the pump together is almost touching the adapter plate. And the adapter plate bolts are countersunk. So adding those is what gives you enough room for the cup to touch the cam shaft.
