this is a pretty fucked up system if the previous owner was able to file for a diminished value claim yet didn't get reported to carfax..
|
I believe they have up to two years to report something that would appear on something like Car Fax.
Had a friend get screwed on a 370Z in a similar way, CarFax was clean when he got it, a year later an old accident was reported on it immediately screwing him at trade time. |
Another reason to just buy new and keep driving it forever.

Insurance companies use a company called Lexis Nexis. Lexis Nexis keeps all your accident records, claims filed and just about everything else about you, which is why you can get an online insurance quote so quickly because they are accessing this database.
In this case it would be hard to get those records without the previous owners information. But Lexis Nexis is the best source to gather insurance information. |

I've also heard of scams where someone could get into an accident in another state, transfer the car over to the current state, and have a clean carfax. I have NO idea how this is even possible, but apparently over in the S2K community its something that everyone always warns you about. Some how people are selling cars with salvaged titles as clean titles in California because something to do with classification of damage in a different state or something. I'm not 100% sure but its possible its what happened here.

I was living in Florida, and I had a CBR 600. Someone was living in Louisiana and had a CBR 900. His was a flood recovery, and it held a salvage title. We traded bikes...mine had a lot of work done to it, and his had a salvage title so we agreed that it was a fair trade. After we traded I went to the DMV in Florida, and they gave me a clean title on the bike...no clue how it managed to happen. And as most outdoor motorcycles go in Orlando, it was stolen a few months later. |

(http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=119373) I'm just glad it was a minor-ish incident that I shouldn't worry too much about it anymore. I still have no idea why the report does not show anything though. That's why I'm curious to see if the report finally shows something about that incident now that I've gotten into an another incident. |

carfax even admits they don't know everything. If someone gets into an accident, has the car towed and fixed privately without notifying their insurance odds are carfax will never find out.
