Not so bad for things like the Miata where they were designed from the start since they don't need extras. I think the targa would retain at least some of the required rigidity but still give the convert feel. Not a hope in hell that they will ever make it though and the custom ones cost about the price of a Porsche so no targa for me.

But we can always dream...

TARGA! TARGA! TARGA!

LOUVERS! LOUVERS! LOUVERS!

Must have them both. I'd even take the new "nose" and tolerate a few extra electronic gizmos of the unneeded variety if it came with both of these.

Backseat in the FRS is already a torture chamber, making the car a convertible would be like inventing "windboarding" for the back-seat occupants; you could drive ISIS captives around until they broke and spilled the beans.

Other than that yeah, great idea.

Obviously it would become a two seater. Not unheard of historically.

This thread just became pointless. Mazda just bitch-slapped and slammed the door on any other company competing in the sports-car convertible market.

This is now for sale:

True...but it's still a Miata, and having seen the current one in person the current model is the Miatiaest of the Miatias so far.

Sorry, just not for me...your opinion may and can vary.

Plus no ability to have louvers!

Yep and it seems to be a hit here.

Could get very lonely talking to myself here in about a year. I will know how Go feels.

Edit: It appears that I will still have Hawk to talk to.

I think its a little too late for the 86 seeing how its already reaching its midlife cycle.

However, maybe a drop a roadster S-FR will be in the cards?

Having actually owned both a Miata and an FRS, I would say that the Miata is a better product. It had to appeal to a more focused group and as such its purpose was not watered down.

Because Toyota and Subaru had to cover a wider spectrum of customers, the FRS got a bit diluted in its purpose. The result is that the FRS is a so-so car with an amazing chassis. I am OK with that, and glad that I got to experience the car, but I would not buy another if they are still around when I finish with this one. The mixed parentage of the car means that I have not developed any loyalties towards Subaru or Toyota when the time comes to buy my next car.

One thing to consider is that in Canada the Miata is a 15k price jump from the FRS by the time it lands in the driveway (32K for FRS vs 45K for Miata ), so from a value standpoint the FRS is not a bad deal. But it is not a great car.

All reasonable points and I realize I'm in the minority on the Miata. I have driven them multiple times, and just can't bring myself to like them.

It's just, for me, they would have to change the car substantially before I would own one, although they are going in the right direction with the Targa (if it were manual). At least with the Targa it doesn't look like a cartoon bathtub on wheels.

Now, that said, I would (and it pains me to say this) take the Miata Targa over the S-FR.

Same here, they're just too small for me :(
