Toyota 86 and 1.6l is contradictory
The name of the car comes from the 86mm bore 86mm stroke which leads to 2l displacement in a 4 cylinder engine. Adding to this the slight dulling of throttle response, lag etc associated with turbos that all go against what a driver's car is meant to be.

Yes, this was just bunk it appears. There is no evidence to support a turbo or supercharged version of the twins for 2014 release. Maybe 2015, but I suspect it will be during a model refresh sometime in 2016. And at that point, if you are out of warranty or close to be out of warranty, you might as well go with an aftermarket turbo or supercharger and not take the depreciation hit.

I asked the head mechanic at the dealership where I'm getting mine and he said if it happens they'd be happy to work with me to bring my 13' up to speed.

Holy shit I made a pun.

I expect that turbo is off the table due to lag, at least as far as the 86 is concerned. That said, given that Tada is already playing with a KERS/hybrid, I wonder why e-assist or a hybrid turbo isn't being considered. It's riskier tech, but it's got to weigh and cost less than a full-blown KERS, lag is better than a turbo, low parasitic losses, and the big parts (capacitor bank) can be put anywhere. Probably costs a pretty penny still, though.

wasn't the engine's bore X stroke a coincidence during planning? I don't think the 86x86 had anything to do with the name.....

And the 1.6L Turbo....didn't Subaru show off one of those at the same time as the BRZ/FRS 2.0L Boxer back before the car was released? as far as I remember, it was a mystery engine that had DIT direct injection but hasn't been utilized in anything yet.

The name comes from the AE86... the bore/stroke just happened to work out that way.

I'm surprised nobody has stuck the V-8 Hyabusa from an Ariel Atom in one yet.

But...
But...
But...
It is a Japanese magazine and they are always the most accurate (according to some) so we must have just missed the 1.6 version back in 13.
