High vs Low octane maps
Thanks for the PM.
The main difference between high and low octane maps is the amount of ignition timing added to the tune... and that's strictly a function of the amount of ignition timing the fuel supports. High octane fuel burns slower than low octane fuel so you can start the combustion earlier (more ignition advance) to get a more complete burn and make more power. If you use that same amount of timing advance with low octane fuel, the combustion completes too soon and you get "knock." The OE computer will detect the knock and retard the base timing which eliminates the knock but will generate a flashing CEL and a misfire code. Because of that, you won't "hurt" anything but you will lose quite a bit of power. The OE computer typically pulls "too much" timing and you'll end up with less total timing (OE ECU + Unichip) than if you ran the low octane Unichip map... in other words, you'll probably end up with less power from the low octane fuel/high octane map than if you ran the low octane fuel/low octane map. Please let me know if you have any other questions. Cheers, Jack |
thanks helped alot

ok so essentially, run the low octane map, lose less power when running 87 or 89. If i was to run the low octane map and fill up with 93, what would happen then? would it produce better gas milage or more power or would it have no effect?

abutterman... thanks for the post.
Running a low octane map with high octane fuel won't "hurt" anything at all, you just won't make as much power because you're not adding much ignition timing. Cheers |
So I installed the unichip with the 92 octane fuel standard timing in option and we have 92 octane premium here. It was fine (no CEL or knocking) for a day but when I got into traffic the other day I got a CEL and the traction control icon?( the one with the car and swerving symbol on it) came on. What does that mean?

Hello. @Unichip Jack
Consider me the village idiot when it comes to this sort of stuff , but i wanted to know if you could assist me. i am in South Africa and I called Dastek/Unichip south africa for info and they advised that there is no such downloading of maps/reflashing from my lap top at home kinda deal here in SA, if i want my unichip in my 86 to work, i need to use the plug and play chip, put the car on a dyno and have it tuned by a tuner, if i want another map, pay the tuner $100 to tune an extra map etc. will the downloadable version ever reach south africa? is there any way i can purchase the cables/harness and do it myself as the guys in the US are doing? any info will be appreciated:thanks: |
Is it possible to run unichip remapping software in Linux?

Bert scionFR-S... sorry for the delayed reply but I've been out of the loop for a bit.
The software runs in Windows only. Please let me know if I can answer any additional questions and enjoy the day. Cheers |
