@twag4, what made you choose to add that oil and how do you add it?

About 300 miles on the average tank of gas for me means that one gallon jug will cover 19,200 miles of cricket free driving. It sounded quiet nearly instantly after adding it the first time. I don't mind $24 for cricket free 19,200 mi of driving.

There's a post much earlier in this thread (forgive me for not going to dig it out) that says a capful (which works out to approximately a 1:1000 mix) of ash-free two-cycle oil is all you need. I would suggest scaling back and seeing what the minimum you can get away with is.

twag4 05-13-2014 04:33 PM

2 oz is less than 500:1. It's fine. I've been using it for a long time in a catted motorcycle engine at around 500:1 with no ill effects. The usage I described on an 11 gallon fill up translates to a 704:1 ratio. No worries for me. Plus, high flow cats will definitely not be affected by this ratio. If my stock cat(s) fail, this is the route I'd go anyway. Replace with high flow. I finally decided to try it. I'm on my 4th tank using the 2-cycle oil, and the car seems to be running better than ever.

I've used it for many years in lawn equipment and two-stroke motocross bikes. I had part of a jug lying around, and tried it. It eliminated the chirps by the time I got to the next red light a block away. I got a two oz mixing syringe at wal mart. It was located in the automotive department with the gas cans. The oz measurements aren't in black, they are moulded into the plastic syringe. I fill it at the house, plug the little clear hose that comes with it, then off to fill up the tank. The hose with the syringe is stored inside attached to the plunger when you buy it. I leave the hose on, and plug it with a small rubber stopper. Plus, the oil is low ash. The old containers specified tcw3 or whatever. Now it simply says low ash on the bottle. I also like Lucas products.

Are there any negative effects to doing this at every full up?

I can't imagine what they might be. It is such a small amount that I can't imagine it clogging the cats or leaning out the mixture. I can't smell it in the exhaust.

Here is what I use

twag4 05-13-2014 05:47 PM

Lawn equipment is not made for ethanol. It has no lubricating properties, and erodes the aluminum used in the engines. I put about 1/2 oz per gallon in my lawn gas for non two stroke engines. I've been doing this as long as we have experienced the unavailability of ethanol free gas in my neck of the woods.

twag4 05-13-2014 06:00 PM

Look, I was hesitant to try this at first too. But, I kept remembering reading about those who had, and it worked for them. My cricket noise finally got the best of me and I gave in. I read a bunch about it outside of this forum. Audi owner's as well as other car owners with direct injection have had much luck with 2 cycle oil. My other complaint was that I already pay way too much for premium gas as is, This just ups the price. But at less than 50 cents a fill up, it is negligibly priced. I'm happy, and I feel the risk is very, very, very low. It works for me. I tried it and it cured my crickets nearly instantly. I have run through 4 full tanks with the two cycle oil before posting my results. I have about 10,500 miles on my car currently. If you're worried about it, then don't try it.

rice_classic 05-13-2014 09:23 PM

Opt for the zero-ash tcw3 two cycle instead. You can find it on amazon or at WalMart.

I use about 1.5 oz per fill up. I keep a little 2oz bottle in the trunk.

Having killed the crickets I'm much happier now.

SGT_slap_a_hoe 05-13-2014 11:31 PM

Sorry for sounding like a noob but where are you guys applying this oil? I'm going to go grab some and the syringe tomorrow

Pour it directly into the fuel tank. Use a funnel.

The Lucas oil is TC-W3. TC-W3 is a certification by NMMA (National Marine Manufacturers Association) regarding lubricating properties and emissions goals. The fact that it is TC-W3 certified or not has no bearing in this application. I could care less how the oil performs in a Johnson 40hp, 70 hp, or Mercury 15hp engine under extended severe conditions. What I want is low ash, and cure the noise. Read about TC-W3 certification here:
http://www.nmma.org/certification/ce...oil/tc-w3.aspx

acg2010 05-14-2014 12:47 AM

^ I think his only point was just that you can get zero-ash instead of even low-ash and in an easier to carry bottle.

rice_classic 05-14-2014 12:53 AM

Correct. no ash better than low ash imho.

twag4 05-14-2014 01:11 AM

I'm not sure where you get zero ash information from. I will say that i just checked my old bottle of Lucas 2 cycle oil and it says TC-W3. The new one does not. Plus, the wal mart oil is cheaper by the gallon, so if it works then why not? Like I said, I'm not super concerned with how good of a two cycle oil it is, just whether or not it shuts up the crickets. I have years of experience with the lucas oil in high performance 2 stroke motocross engines running very high compression with race gas, and it works exceptionally well. It also works well in 2 stroke lawn engines. Sorry rice-classic if I sounded snarky, that wasn't my intent. Hard to hear emotion when reading the words on a page. I am not sure how a mineral oil such as wal mart's super tech could be zero ash, but a great performing synthetic blend would have more ash. Plus, it has higher certifications from ISO, JASO, and API. All of which are much more stringent certifications than TC-W3. TC-W3 does not mean zero ash. Nowhere in the certification requirements for TC-W3 does it specify zero ash. However, I would not be afraid of using the wal mart stuff in my car.

Also, I think ashless would be more of a concern in an oil injection system rather than a mix like we are doing to our cars. Anyway, my opinion only. Best of luck!

So are you suggesting we should or should not use ashless?

twag4 05-14-2014 10:35 AM

I'm making no suggestions. Do what you want. I was just sharing my experience.

Indestruct 05-17-2014 09:54 PM

I took delivery on my brz in May 12, I've had crickets within the first 1,000 miles. I've noticed that the crickets will go away when running e85. I've also noticed some gas stations produce more crickets than others.

When I switched my car back to 91 from e85 the crickets were on full fire again... I said why not, took it to the dealer and told them to replace my tail lights for condensation and the fuel pump. The assistant service manager said the crickets will be more quiet but not go away. I wonder how many miles before the crickets come up again?

extrashaky 05-17-2014 10:45 PM

My understanding from reading up on two-cycle oil on the oil forum is that you want ashless because it burns away cleaner and leaves nothing behind.

I'm currently testing Marvel Mystery Oil, another product I read about on the oil forum. I've run one tank on it so far. The crickets are noticeably quieter, but they're still there. However, I also noticed that the direct injection clacking has gotten MUCH quieter. I don't feel any difference in how the engine responds, but it definitely sounds a bit more civilized and less like a tractor.

l0aded 05-18-2014 07:07 AM

Goiing to try out one of these two-cycle TCW3s tomorrow. Any brand recommendations for the ashless that I can pickup at walmart or oriely?

Supertech at Walmart

Mine had the crickets pretty much immediately after I bought it. They were less loud with a full tank but got louder as the fuel level dropped. I have about 1100 miles on the car currently. Today I filled up with Ethanol Free 91 octane (We don't have\need 93 or 94 in the mountains of colorado due to the high altitude) and within just a few miles, the crickets were gone. I drove about 150 miles today and never heard them once. Additionally, the car seems to run with noticeably smoother powerband. Unfortunately I had to pay $4.59 per gallon but, so be it.

This is true for me. They go away with a full tank and as I'm nearing empty, I can hear them. Solution... I just fill up more often.

Hi guys, been a while since my last post and I'm happy to say that after the 1st checkup of my brand new GTS86 Auto, no more crickets. But a new issue has arisen. I'm finding that at a roundabout or at a stop light, when I take off, between 30-37kms p/h, the car revs real high, then kicks into 2nd and drives normally. Not sure if this is something that I should be worried about. Can anyone assist before I take it back in again.

This may not be exactly dedicated to our cars, but I was researching the 2 cycle oil treatment and found this forum where a guy did some extensive testing. Read up if you like. I think I'm going to go this route as well and see how it does.

BRZJunkie 05-21-2014 10:34 PM

Update on my crickets. I got them pretty much since week 1 (oct/2013) until I figured that putting E0 V-Power gaz got rid of them. Was happy but felt a bit limited since only Shell V-Power has no ethanol around here and the moment you drive out a bit than nothing exist, no E0 at all.

With the warmer weather, they woke up a bit but just a mild case. Got 2.5oz of Lucas upper cylinder... in the tank and presto. Gone. I also notice lately that 91 oct, althought OK, is not the designed 93oct (read it in the manual if I recall correctly) and you hear clearly quite often some pinging when you accelerate, or even when blipping the gaz pedal. I just filled my tank of Petro-Canada 94 E10. The crickets came back as loud as I ever heard them. Since it was all part of a calculated plan I had a quart of Lucas Semi-synthetic 2-cycle motorcycle oil. Added 2 ounces to tank and the crickets went away completely. As for the pinging, the jury is still debating but I think it works better now. Time will tell and I will report on results afetr a few tanks and with warmer temperature.

This is not true for me. The crickets do not care how much gas I have in the car. However, they do seem to care what brand of gas I give them. A full tank from Sam's Wholesale club sounds like the whole swamp is singing under my hood.

Most likely the cause was not the temperature change, but a change in gasoline blend. The gas distributors change the blends with the changes of the seasons. I am absolutely convinced that the additive packages in the different blends of gasoline are what causes the crickets to be louder, softer or quiet.

Kosmos 05-22-2014 12:35 AM

Correct. But trying a thicker oil is an experiment as well. And fyi to all. Stay away from BP gas they have strange additives in their gas and if you do or have use BP for some time check your spark plugs. It changes the color of the tips to orange as proof. That BP uses some strange additives in their gasoline

I'm going to buy a bottle of that soon. My local autoparts store is buy 2 get 1 free for that right now lol.

sybrite 05-22-2014 05:58 PM

So I just put a couple ounces of the Lucas Oil 2-cycle in and filled up. My crickets have been very loud and annoying for a few thousand miles now. I've mostly just been trying to ignore them. Anywho, I drove to pick my son up and within 15 miles, they were gone and the car hasn't exploded yet.

Nevermore 05-22-2014 07:37 PM

I was surprised when I couldn't find the lucas oil at Auto Zone. I heard crickets laughing at me when I left the parking lot. But it gives me an opportunity to ask you guys a question. How do you clean off the funnel and keep oil out of your trunk/car? I guess just wiping it off with gas station paper towels works?

Someone recommended Lucas Upper Cylinder Lubrication & Injector Cleaner in this forum approximately 9 months ago. Since then I've been running this in every tank, without chirping and a much quieter and smoother engine. IMHO I'd rather add a fuel lubricant, than 2 stroke oil, to my gas.

I buy mine off Amazon, and add 2oz to ever fill-up from empty.

i run a 50/50 mix of redline fuel additive and ASHLESS 2 stroke NON synthetic oil, i use about 250ml per full tank of gas , engine is suuuuper quiet runs silky smooth, no smoke and o2 sensor has a perfect grey color to it, there is no buildup of any kind ,reason for non synthetic is that synthetic 2 stoke oil does NOT burn, it WILL crude up your o2 sensor and make higher amount of carbon buildup, i personally run SHELL marine ashless its cheap and burns completly without leaving residue , the injector noise is completly gone and in general the engine runs smoother, this is not enought to actually produce smoke it equates to a 1:300 mixture, which is nothing , the redline injector cleaner seems to work really well, so i just get a bottle pour 1/2 of it into another container and it has 250ml markings on it so its easy . i top that 1/2 up with 2 stroke oil and bingo,

I just love the fact that our cars are now apparently run by 2-cycle engines

At least, if we want to be rid of the crickets...

Warranty Repair

After thinking about it for awhile I caved in and had my pump replaced under warranty. I usually perform all my own repairs and maintenance so I always worry about fixing things that aren't really "broken". I worry something else will mess up after the repair, but after looking at the price of the pump some 1,200 dollars I said sure give it to me free. :w00t:

Not a fan of leaving my baby in someone else hands though...

I didn't purchase the car from the this dealership but still treated me well I dropped my car off in the evening the service manager said it looks like I took good care of my care so they'll keep it inside over night. That was a nice touch. Took them literally 2 hours the next morning to swap it out. All in all a very pleasant experience my first time owning a car with a warranty and actually using it. I didn't even purchase the car from the this dealership but still treated me well so that was nice.

I've only logged about 100 miles so far but no more crickets! Hope it lasts.... if they come back ill just live with it I don't think I want to start running 2 stroke oil....:iono:

Have a good memorial weekend everyone!

I messaged my Toyota rep and she just pretty much stop responding now. Toyota isn't doing shit about the crickets because they don't know what to do. Guess I'll try some Lucas upper cylinder fluid my next fillup. If anything, it HELPS the crap we put in our cars more than hurts.
