I think there a change in some of the rocker arm/valve and maybe cam assemblies in early gen 1's. It may have been done to help eliminate rocker arm ejections....

Rod 1 is fed from 1st main bearing. Rod 4 is fed from 5th main bearing. Rods 2 and 3 are both fed from 3rd main bearing. It will always be 2 or 3 rod that fails first as they have to share oil.

Last motor swap I did (which was a few years ago) took about 5 hours from driving one into the garage with rod knock to firing the new (used, ebay) motor up.

These things are stupid simple.
