I recommend trying out the "Virtual Stage Enhancer" under Vocal Image Control. It definitely helps blend the audio between the drivers, instead of shouting through each one.

Unfortunately, I can confirm the MTEC spring on this gen. creates some unwanted slop at the top of the pedal throw. Removing the spring entirely also induces some slop.

I don't think anything below a 5xx model will work with our cars. Jumping to the 5xx series grants OBII relearn, which our cars require.

I'm almost positive they will be backwards compatible. My tool did not have the MY22 BRZ as an option, so I used the MY20. Same 315MHz sensor - you should be fine as long as you can pull the codes...
