No crickets in winter?

I swear I haven't heard the crickets since novemebr. Is it due to the cold? Are they canning the ethanol in winter?

They've finished mating.

Get ready for springtime.

Hmm now that you mention it.

I imagine it has to do with the different gas blends for hot vs cold weather (adding ethanol or butane in cold).

Not sure though.

Going to go out on a branch here and say that external temps in excess of 70F are going to compound the cricketing fuel pump issue. As soon as it dropped below 50 or so, mine almost entirely cut off, save for long drives where the pump has enough time to get good and warm. Of course heat causes crickets.

No crickets anymore. It must be the ethanol content or formulation. I found that Shell formulation makes my car have the crickets and BP doesn't.

It's the gasoline blend. When the gas stations switch over to winter blends, the crickets are reduced.

Winter blends have butane in them, which burns like gasoline but is cheaper to produce. This is one of the reasons you normally see a drop in fuel prices during winter months. Butane evaporates more easily than gasoline, however, so it can't be used in higher temps because it would evaporate too quickly. Winter blends also have some other differences, any one of which (or combination of which) could be the reason we hear a decrease in crickets during the winter.

Because of the number of miles I drive (~2500 miles per month), I'm usually fueling up multiple times per week, so I get to experience the effects of it first hand. When the stations in my area were switching over to winter blends, there was a period of about two weeks in which one tank would have crickets, the next tank wouldn't, the next tank would, etc. Then they disappeared altogether when all the stations had gone over to winter blends.

Be aware that your experience may vary. There are something like two dozen official blends of gasoline in the US alone, so you may still get cricket gas even in the winter, depending on where you are and where you buy your fuel.
