No thanks. As much as I love the Griffon, all the exterior parts would probably cost twice the amount the FRS goes for.

Source?

if it's true, then it'll most likely be Japan-only and the parts will be a bitch to get.

Don't think that would be really possible. Would be interested in your source though.

It won't, because:

  • Chassis is nothing new.. production frame + stitch welding with a cage
  • Suspension is nothing new.. any aftermarket suspension will be equal or better, assuming proper tuning
  • Body kit cannot be street legal, due to zero provisions for headlights, safety equipment, etc
  • Engine tune is... well, not really a tune. Bolt-on I/H/E parts
If this is indeed a teaser, Toyota may be doing a "GT86 Griffon spec car" build and selling it for a hefty price tag of $80k or above. This is meant for anyone looking to build an all-out track car and want the lightest car to start.

I think it basically a development car to help with R&D, the parts on the drive train will most definitely be available at some point, as for the exterior fluff, if its functional bring it on, if not they can keep it and help keep the FRS' price down

No roll cage. (Not even race legal)

Suspension is KW 3 way adjustable dampers (considered to be best there is).

Engine is left essentially untouched. Fully custom made titanium exhaust system is used apparently.

Basically TRD Griffon is a developmental project for the 86. They want to see how far the car can be pushed without necessarily adding power. As of now they have hit the 1:00 mark on tsukuba circuit by just cutting weight and working on aerodynamics. They test many TRD products with that car, for example: TRD Bushings, Clutch, LSD, Aero Fins, and etc. So you can say its a marketing thing for TRD too.

There is a very low chance for the TRD Griffon in any of its form to be sold in the market. However, the parts from TRD Griffon project will continue to trickle down to us consumers/enthusiasts. Tada san has already stated that most if not all future parts for the 86 can be retrofitted to "earlier" models. So that is why he said there is no point in waiting for the so called "special variants"
