2.2Lude's ZC6 BRZ Seat Time Build

Track season is back in full swing here in Northern California and it's about time I get a build thread going for my 1st Gen BRZ.

The car is a 2014 Premium BRZ 6 speed that I bought in Oct. 2023 off FB with 93.6k miles and a salvage title. Salvage title was the result a front end collision involving the airbag impact sensor. Fix required a new windshield, dash, airbags, front bumper, and headlight bracket. The seller purchased it from auction, completed the repairs, and put in a new Excedy clutch to flip - no idea if the TOB was also changed but no noises soo far and operation is smooth.

Build Goal: Low budget seat time car. Possible 86 Challenge street class build. She's not the prettiest with plenty of dings but runs great and will hopefully serve my purpose for a few years.

I have the luxury of working from home and a few other cars so this build can focus a little more track performance in its progression and a little less on street comfort, though it is still somewhat important. Laguna is a 2+ hour drive and Thunderhill is a 3+ hour drive for me.

Prior to the repairs :

The car came with a 3" Perrin exhaust, Injen SP Intake, and Carbon Reproductions 2017 OE Style Spoiler. The exhaust and Intake got pulled off for OEM replacements rather quickly.

How it currently sits :

Current Mod List :

Will update soon.

No worries, wheels/tires are a fresh set of Falken RT615k+'s in a 225/45 size on 17x9 +35 Apex Arc8's.

Thank you!

A year plus later.. #3 DI injector called it quits mid 2024 on the way to Thunderhill. I was lucky it failed at a family Members place the evening prior to the track day in Sac. We tried our best to get it running by replacing the MAF because it was throwing both #3 misfire and MAF codes but it made no difference.

Had it towed to a nearby Subaru shop since I was about 2 hours away from home. Jamie at SubiWest ran through all the logical troubleshooting steps swapping coils, plugs, port injectors, checking DI ECU ground, checking wiring, and compression testing cylinders #1 and #3 . I can't recall the numbers off the top of my head but Jamie said they were extremely strong.

Eventually he narrowed it down to cylinder #3's DI injector or the DI ECU.
Being that DI injector failures aren't that common, he opted to try swapping the DI computer before condemning the injector itself. No go.

He torn it down and pulled out the DI injector. The teflon seal was in okay condition but the injector was all plugged up. He replaced it with a new one from the dealer since it was the quickest way to get a new one.

As a precaution for the other DI injectors.. maybe just to make my self feel better.. I ran a crap ton of LiquiMoly DI Jectron through the tank.

Once that was taken care of, the car was back to running and feeling great..mostly. The XP10's on the base calipers and RT615k+'s weren't really cutting it anymore. Here was my last day on the combo + GruppeS UEL header and OFT Stage2+ OTS tune on 91.

Speed SF - 3/24/25 - 1:47.66 :

Amazing conditions all day long, the cars and tires were loving it. Everyone was flying and PB'ing. Myself included. This was also my first 86Challenge event. SpeedSF gave us our own run group which was a great experience. Based on the rules I ended up in Touring class because of the RT615K+'s. Placed 3rd in class with just a 3.5 point build(max 7 allowed) and a passenger.

The car is now on a Brembo GT front BBK with XP12's and 245/40 SX2's - the 86C spec tire for stock and street classes. I also tossed in a Whiteline KDT926 shifter bushing and Whiteline KDT925 diff insert bushings, minus the thinner outrigger top pieces. On the UEL header and stock exhaust there is a very minimal increase in NVH. I would say I'm more bothered than most by a loud exhaust but my current set up is very enjoyable. The little extra rumble from the bushing inserts and UEL is really nice, it brings the car to life under you without being bothersome or in your face at all. UEL header does make some odd noises even though there's no leaks from what I can find. Research indicates it's normal. Minor quip here.

Took the car back out to Thunderhill West a few weeks ago to test out the new tires and brakes. Hot but overall a successful day. I'll cut up the video and post it later.
