Subaru 216A confirmed with 2.0L turbo, AWD, bigger and heavier than FT-86

I have my suspicion over the legitimacy of the article. A similar article was posted at autoblog but they never mention that the information is confirmed.

I personally would prefer a lighter RWD setup but I think the AWD would be more practical and I guess a safer alternative for me as a DD seeing as how we get quite a lot of snow in the winter in NYC.

I'm hoping that both Yota and Subie are able to pull off what all their fans are asking for because the Hyundai Genesis Coupe R-Spec version that was just announced is looking really appealing, especially at it's price of 23k.

Oh I never said the subie would be a well balanced agile machine...that would be the RWD Toyota version. The subie version, because of the awd layout constraints you mentioned, would be a wrx coupe...a nose heavy understeering pig just like the current wrx 4 and 5 door. (j/k)

But a lot of subaru fans love their wrx and want a coupe version so that's not a problem for them. 2 different cars for two different customer demographics.

Thats good news actually. It just gives further evidence that Toyota can, similiarly, make a base-line model (no stupid gadgets I don't want/need) for ~$18,000. Considering the FT-86 is considerably smaller (less materials cost) and isn't outfitted with a turbo, I'd say that price range is pretty realistic.

Of course this could just be my hopeless optimism kicking in again.

^ I think the pricing would go way beyond just material costs. The Genesis Spec R is reported to be a stripped down version of their Track trim, without the bluetooth, and gadgets that the normal track version comes with, but still have all the performance parts that were in the track version.

The way I see Hyundai being able to produce a car for such a good price is because their a Korean manufacturer vs a Japanese manufacturer. It's not just whats going to be in the car and the materials used to build it but where each manufacturer is getting their parts, for how much, the current economic status of their respective nations and how much profit they're looking to make off the product.

But of course at this point and time, Japanese autos are superior in quality to Korean autos, but of course that will change in the next 10-20 years.

Yeah about that Genesis Coupe R-Spec, looking at the specs that thing.... that bitch is heavy as hell...weighs in at 3549 withh only 212hp...no wonder that thing puts up such week numbers, however ther is potential in the aftermarket world to improve that for a price...once again FT-86 gets my vote. spec=http://www.conceptcarz.com/vehicle/d...16620&i=2#menu

yea definitely. I'm not doubting the lack of performance on the Genesis especially to other cars in it's class range. I'm just saying if Yota and Subie aren't able to pull off what people are looking for, then it would really suck, people may look to the Genesis simply because it's cheaper.

Of course the potential is there, just look at Rhys Millen's Genesis coupe

The curb weight for the 2.0t base is 3294lbs and the Track model is 3362lbs. During a recent Web event with the U.S. poduct manager for Hyundai we were told the R-Spec will weigh in around the same as the base model. Even the V6 doesn't get over 3549lbs.

But yeah it is still heavy.

To hell with a $30,000 (or more ) WRX coupe. I like Subaru, a lot and I really appreciate what they've done for rallying in the states. Hell, I rallyX and plan on buying a old legacy turbo or RX for a stage rally car, (if I can find one) but, i'm not really interested in a more expensive AWD car that is just going to see DD duties. However, I can understand why it's being produced and I hate to admit but I like the look of the Subie (magazine scan) version more.

Also, the 0216a is debuting at least a year after the toyota model and I want this car yesterday!

This magazine is very very famous for fabricated article in japan.
I don't believe that is really reliable.

Mr. Tada, Chief engineer of FT-86, Toyota said the team is trying to set its engine and transmission lower and much more close to the center of the car.
If Subaru is considering make an AWD turbo coupe as a brother car, it will be very difficult because there are not enough space there for the turbo engine and AWD transmission.

It's nothing official but I have seen it on other websites as welland it is in reference to the STi version. but from 7tune:

"Although it’s not confirmed yet, there’s a strong possibility the Subaru 086A STi Version will be shown at the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show or not long after at the 2012 Tokyo Auto Salon and will hit showrooms shortly thereafter."

Following the comments by Subaru Australia it sounds like Fuji has been at lease somewhat skeptical, or adding AWD has been a challenge so, the betting man says the Subaru version will follow the Toyota.
