I don't want/need wasteful heavy-ass AWD! I am excited for this collab for the focus on sporting-car principles like lighter weight and focused handling (boxer/ lighter weight). It snows at most 4 times a year here, during which i want to spin the wheels anyway.
& I wanted to support Subaru, the corp headquarters is so local

Color me skeptical on a variety of fronts:

1) Subbie Australia said they weren't getting it since it was RWD only, and that it wouldn't fit with their brand image
2) There's no way a turbo, intercooler, piping, and AWD setup only adds 100kg (220lbs).
3) There's no way the AWD version is only going to grow by 30mm, and I can guarantee that it's not going to grow in the wheelbase when it does. The engine has to be in front of the rear axle, which is why the nose on any of the current Subbie's looks the way it does. There is no room in the front of the FT-86 (even when you add in the inch) to stuff an engine...

Oh well, only time will tell. 7tune's been pretty accurate with articles on the Toyobaru so far, so maybe they know something that I don't.

Perhaps it's just me, but why do you need a turbo? Being a good driver in a slower car is more valuable than having the 'potential' speed. Spend the extra money on track or autox time. Just my two cents. I would prefer a well tuned rwd over awd any day. This is not going to be a rally car, so there is no point of awd. The only reason Subaru is offering that option is because of their marketing strategy (which is: 'AWD is better'), so they cannot simply bring a non-awd car to the market under their name.

Also... this certainly puts the pressure on Toyota to offer a turbo/TRD version... if not, we all know what the popular engine swap is gonna be...

Until I get a confirmed proper automotive source, with actual quotes from a Subaru executive, AND photos of the concept instead of just sketches by the reporting source, I won't believe it.

I also admit, I hope Subaru doesn't come out with one. I love my Subie, but I want the RWD, lighter Toyota in this case. And if you recall, all prev official notices have said that only the Subie version would be sold in North America.

I'll be more than happy if I end up being wrong and we get both, however. I just wish officials from both car companies would set this straight for good.

I have my S2000 for that, which I plan on turning into my track car if the 86 turns out to be worthwhile.

It'd be stupid stupid stupid for Subaru to release this car with AWD. It's already going to be a slow car that's fun to drive fast. I don't have a problem with that, in fact, I like it. I'd love 180HP, 6MT, RWD, LSD, 2600lbs, $23,000; sounds like an awesome package.

If you equip the car with AWD, it's going to be heavier, get worse MPG and be much slower than the RWD counterpart. In a car this small with this little power, AWD is entirely unnecessary (drives 01 2.5RS).

Based on the photoshops of the Subaru, the Toyota looks much better to boot.

I'd think that their version with STi guts would also be closer to $32K
