New FT86 Info: July MagX

Scans from the July 2010 issue of New Model Magazine (Mag-X).

I've had this scan for a month but haven't had time to post this (or register for this site).

Unlike Best Car, that tends to have sketchy information at time and made the rumor about the delay, MagX is generally incredibly reliable and a lot more conservative about their reporting on rumors.

MagX states that the car will make its debut in April 2012.

Toyota is planning on releasing a car based on the "GRMN FR Hot Hatch Concept" that they have been testing, this car will be a RWD Hothatch aimed at enthusiasts and will sell for around ~$16, so for this reason selling the FT86 at the ~$20k mark will likely cannibalize each others sales. For this reason, the car will be closer to low-mid $20k area in price. This will give Toyota a little more flexibility with increasing quality and performance of the vehicle.

For the final design, Toyota will be aiming for a much more "emotional" design language then the conservative designs that they have become known for. There will be a departure fro the AE86 in terms of philosophy, while the AE86 was a hatch based on a Corolla, the FT86 will be a much more bespoke vehicle closer to the 2000GT in form.

If it doesn't look anywhere close to the original concept and Gsport, I'm getting the Z. The yellow ones on pics above don't look that good.

Yellow one looks more concept-ish then the red one.

+1 on yellow looking like garbage

I'm actually likng the wider headlights, and they're more realistic, but I really dislke the lack of fender vent and added volume.

Either design is fine by me. I sure hope those dimensions are wrong though. If they are correct the length has gone up almost 4 inches, the width is about the same, and the height went up 2 inches. Bigger dimensions = more weight..

Yellow one is too curvy, very veil-side body kit like.

Not buying it. Had they said Toyota sports 800 rather than 2000gt, then maybe I'd sip the cool aid. They do know that the 2000GT was super limited and and cost more than the Jag E-Type of the time right?

i would agree that both yellow designs look unoriginal 1st looks like s2000 as mentioned and the 2nd looks like an 240/rx-7 cross.

the original design was just that, original. but as long as the performance and driving characteristics are what we were promised, i'd take any of the 3.

I noticed something, the 2 yellow FT-86's dont match.

The on on the cover has black pillars, black mirrors and different headlights. And a different location for the Toyota logo.
The one in the book has yellow pillars, color keyed mirrors different headlights, and again, different location for the Toyota logo.

And i think different front bumper? just slightly different.

What there were pictures in the article? All I saw was April 2012 which is a hell of a lot bettert than delayed until 2013.

Plus those are just some artist guess as to what the production model might look like. My guess is that we'll see a production model at the 2011 Tokyo Auto show and then it'll go on sale shortly after in early 2012. This auto season we'll probably see a subaru concept just to keep the buzz going until the production models show up at shows late next year.

Agreed. If they had the side from the Red concept, front end of the Yellow concept (only because it looks more production like with the blinkers in it) and the wheels from the Yellow concept, I'd be more than happy

Do you mind translating what it says in the article.

Put me down for a '10 370Z too. The fangs are starting to grow on me.

ugh according to the article the car is getting bigger, more luxurious, and more expensive. i think that is the exact opposite of what everyone has been asking for in this car. i really hope magx is wrong.

I'm currently @ da track atm (taking a break).

I'll get back later tonight & I have hella early work tomorrow due to interviewing several people @ work (my boss is too lazy to interview people, so I'm doing it). so if u can wait 2~3 Days, but so far I've read, it's pretty much what cyde01 have stated.

I prefer the original.. But I could live with the Yellow one. I still hope the concept shape is put into production.
