Hi guys, i just signed up here and am a current owner of a Genesis Coupe. My gf is in the market for a new car and is looking at hopefully getting one this month. So my question to you guys is who in SoCal (preferably around LA area) has these in stock at the moment? Ive been browsing around the forum and what ive gathered is most if not all of you have pre-ordered your cars? So is there no chance at pretty much going into the dealerships (lets say around the end of May) and working out a deal? Please advise, thanks!

I don't think its' very likely that you'll be able to walk into a dealership and buying it off the lot. Most are pre-ordered and any lot that doesn't have their list full has probably have some ridiculous markup and or black listed. :<

Sorry, let me clarify. I meant "filled" as in how long until everyone who pre-ordered gets theirs and the cars will be available to the "general public"? Because im not looking for right now, im looking to go in around end of May/June

this car is going to be so rare! that some that pre ordered won't get it till end of this year or next...most dealers are only getting 3-7 BRZ this whole year

for those that didn't pre order and your just waiting for them to be open to the public I would say you'll get your chance next year...probably around Jan....subaru is actually going to make more the beginning of Jan 2013

also most of the members on this forum have been waiting for some time already...and there's a few of us that pre ordered early...but you could look around to see who's going to back out on there pre order GL

86 said it. Sorry I wasn't being so clear either.

Most cars are booked. :<

And like 86 said.. each dealer gets a number of cars.

honestly, do a little research on the dealers from your area and see what they can do for you. If you're like me, you'll probably end up going out of state to pick one up. true story bro. lol

This.
Whether its a BRZ or an FRS you'll be able to find one in the next 2-4 months no problem.
People here forget this forum doesn't represent the larger car buying public. Be patient, wait for your exact spec and sooner rather than later you will find one.

Exactly. That is why im not too worried and not in a rush. This is a Scion it wont be a "rare" car by any means lol. Thanks for all the replies by the way. Do any of you know whether the two dealers who replied above are marking up the cars?

Anyone looking for an FRS should hit up Nathan, he's been the quickest on emails, either it's coffee, or he doesn't sleep.

But yeah, hit him up for some good info.

+1, I also asked to be put on Nathan's list for an FR-S. Great guy to deal with.

If you go that route, you'll have to put at least 7500 before you can registered it in CA. Probably not a good idea for a new car unless you plan to registered outside of CA and new cars are smog exempt for 5yrs.

http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/brochures...cts/ffvr29.htm

Be Sure You Can Register it in California The Bottom Line

If you are a California resident and acquire a new car, truck or motorcycle from another state, it must be certified to meet California smog laws in order to be registered here. This includes certain diesel powered vehicles. DMV cannot accept an application to register a vehicle in California that does not qualify for registration (Health and Safety Codes [H&SC] §§43150 – 43156.)
What Is Considered a new Vehicle?

California considers any vehicle with less than 7,500 miles on the odometer at the time of purchase or trade by a California resident or business to be a new vehicle. This holds true whether or not the vehicle has been registered in another state.
Aren't all Vehicles California Certified?

Not all new vehicles are manufactured to be sold in California residents or businesses. Many manufacturers make vehicles to be sold in the other 49 states. These vehicles (49-State) are made with smog equipment that meets federal emission standards, but not California standards. California certified (50-State) vehicles are made to be sold to California residents.
Check the Label

To find out whether a car, truck or motorcycle is California certified, check the emission label under the hood. For a motorcycle check the frame or refer to your owner's manual. The label should read that the vehicle conforms to California regulations, or that it is legal for sale in California.
Exemptions

There are a few exemptions included in the law. As a California resident you may be able to register a 49-State vehicle if it was:
  • Obtained as part of a divorce, inheritance, or a legal separation settlement
  • Purchased it to replace your California registered vehicle stolen while you were using it out of state.
  • Purchased it to replace your California registered vehicle that was destroyed or made inoperative beyond reasonable repair while you were using it out of state.
  • An emergency vehicle, pursuant to California Vehicle Code § 27156.2 and 27156.3.
  • Registered by you in the state of your last active military service outside California.
  • A street motorcycle or motor-driven cycle year model 2005 and older with an engine less than 50 cubic centimeters (cc) displacement. Beginning January 1, 2006, street motorcycles and motor-driven cycles year model 2006 and newer, with engines less than 50 cc displacement, require an emission label certifying them to U.S. Environmental Protection Agency emission regulations, and may be registered regardless of mileage.

^Very important to point that out.
Me and a number of coworkers relocated to our California office last year and only those who got their vehicles covered as part of their relocation expenses bothered.
It's a pain in the butt and it isn't cheap.

From reading up on things I got the impression it would be cheaper and easier to import a car from the States to Canada, than one of the other 49 states to California. A bit OTT maybe, but I definitely wouldn't purchase a new car out of state.
