Looks okay. Hopefully it's a retractable hard top. S2000 was one of my all time favorites, so even if it is a fabric hard top, I'd love an aluminum or carbon hardtop to cover it up.

Scion needs a convertible, real bad. Hopefully this won't be that much more expensive than the base FR-S. But a targa FR-S\BRZ\86 would be awesome. Some like the Lamborgini Aventador roadster. Its really a targa not a roadster. But it works.

I agree, wonder if they will name it differently FR-C XD i'm just wondering how they are going to price it since, we both know anything open top is somewhat pricey with the exception of Mx 5 which still starts at 23K and I doubt it will be price lower than the current FRS.

I would prefer Targa, but I must say it looks good. Wheels also look very good. But they must be 19" if not 20". I'd say I prefer this than an MX-5. Anyway for me a open-top is not meant for performance, so that is not a deal. I must say I prefer this over an S2000, but would prefere an S200 Coupé over a GT86 Coupé. Anyway good move Toyota. The GT86 is so popular, it will also sell (except in Europe) as open top and might really steel share from MX-5. I imagine many girls driving it, they'll look sexy in it, but unlike the MX-5 I don't find it a girls car.
Really nice, it's going to be another hit for Toyota. You guys are loosers for hating this car. Hey, if you don't like it don't buy it, but it is on our side. And if Toyota did a onvertible, I'm sure they had that in mind before, so they build the chassis capable of being convertible.

Looking at the seat protection, I'm thinking this prototype doesn't even have a roof it can raise.

This will cost about 5k more. Convertibles typically cost 5k more so expect to pay about $29,500 USD.

I would never get one myself, I love the hardtop but would like to see a targa top also.
The convertible though, i'm trying to get my mom to get one when it comes out. |

I agree that it does appear to be a non-functional prototype, most likely just to use as a concept car on the auto show circuit to help continue interest in the 86. There's so little room between the tunk lid and the rear seats that the rear seats would have to go if they were going to fit a soft top.
Many car companys build one-off convertible prototypes that never make it to production. I remember when I had an Oldsmobile Alero, GM had a convertible version built that never made it beyond the concept stages.

I would buy it. Dropped and flushed wheels whould make this car so siiickk. Like the s2k.

Disagree, S2000 looks better and was designed to be a convertible. But then again I'm biased
I don't really see the point of the convertible... I plan on getting a fixed roof coupe when I'm ready to pick up an 86 to go with my S2K (the other reason I wouldn't get the vert... already have one that I feel is better and made as a vert from the ground up... this is being made after the fact like the 350/370Z). I'm with others, a targa or t-tops would've been awesome and I probably would spring for one of those. I didn't read all through the pages so I may have missed it, but I can't help but wonder how much having the missing roof will affect the handling of the car? That's one of the major selling points to the 86 twins.

"The [86] was designed from the outset to be built as a convertible," Toyota's chief engineer for the 86 coupe, Tetsuya Tada, told Autobild.
Just wanted to put some facts down, just in case there's some arguments about this car was getting it's roof chopped off, when it was made to be a convertible in the first place.

And if that is true, why release it as a coupe and not make it a convertible in the first place then?
