(Again ugh) We Hear: New Toyota Supra in Pipeline, Coming with 400-HP Hybrid

According to our man in Japan Peter Lyon, Toyota R&D is working on a Supra successor that is being tested with a 3.5-liter V-6 hybrid system generating over 400 hp. Rumored to be wearing a design close to the FT-HS concept’s body (pictured below) revealed at the 2007 Detroit show, the rear-drive coupe is expected to target the Nissan GT-R in terms of performance and price.
But our insider tells us that Toyota bean counters “are not too pushing to get this car out quickly,” and are waiting to see how the GT86 goes. If it gets the go-ahead, we won’t see it until 2015.
In contrast, Toyota engineers ARE putting more effort into readying a test mule of the MR-S based 4WD GRMN coupe boasting the same Lexus GS sourced 3.5-liter hybrid system. If this project gets the green light, we can expect to see it in showrooms by late 2014.
However, there seems to be one issue for Toyota product planners. They are in the final developmental stages of a Lexus IS coupe that will be powered by the same powertrain, a fact that creates a differentiation problem for Toyota.

Hybrid system better get me 400 lb-ft of instant torque off the line! Otherwise, it's dead weight. Nobody cares about fuel economy in high end sportscars!

I wouldn't be surprised I mean The NSX is confirmed for 2014 and is going to be running on Honda's Earth Dream Engine. I wouldn't be surprise if all the top teirs came back to fight it out. Let's cross our finger for the revival! Return of the 90's hay days!

the rumor that hasn't died for over a decade. it would be a Toyota and priced to compete w/ Camaro and Mustang. it's amazing the nonsense car publications spew out. the concept of a hybrid paired w/ a sportscar has always seemed wrong to me, for so many many reasons. not only that, but hybrid technology isn't really all that environmentally friendly or "sustainable'. tree hugging hyperbole drives me nuts, because it's BOGUS.

@400hp, how exactly do they plan to target the GT-R in price and performance? Ultra lightweight? With a hybrid?..... yeah right. This is bunk.

keep dreaming
well, 400hp, super high low speed torque, keep weight below 3200, it could be close :O say they keep FT weight for the chassis/body by using more aluminum and fiberglass or something, add a few hundred for the bigger motor, it could happen!

Wouldn't this Toyota Supra infact be the Lexus Concept tht is going to be shown in january? Or wouldn't this Lexus be the IS Coupé Concept? Way to many sport cars coming all of a sudden out from Japan.

i don't get it?? you're more or less saying what i'm saying in that this isn't a GTR competitor. the MKVI Supra was a Mustang/Camaro competitor in the same size and performance class.

Mk4 was a Vette competitor.

He's saying that priced like a Mustang/Camaro is dreaming.

Back in high school I would spend my study period on just reading about cars and the "FT-HS" is one car I remember my friends and I always debated about.
So I want to see a Lexus Supra now Toyota (no need for a hybrid)!

Still sounds terrible though.

IDK if they gonna actually use the name Supra is the big question.

MkIV Supra was the best car they never made (IMO) and I don't think Toyota wanna give that name away to Lexus or Scion, even though they're same company

Hopefully that is the case. But how many of us thought the same thing regarding this car (FRS)?

For FRS, there's a price difference. It's under $30k... vs Supra is over $30k

Sure but argument could be made that no Scion was ever priced over $20k until the FRS came along. Now all of a sudden the FRS is 30% more expensive than the 2nd most expensive car in the lineup.

I don't doubt that the Supra will be well over $30k (probably closer to $60-70k if I had to guess) but that doesn't stop Toyota from making a interesting decision if they view Toyota as the green/boring lineup, Lexus as the luxury brand and Scion as the sporty/fun lineup. Not saying if a Supra came out it would be a Scion, I'm just saying many of us were surprised the FRS was not a Toyota here in the USA.
