"With my next sportscar," explains Tada-san, "I want to make a big... ‘wow'." His arms gesticulate large vortex circles. "Nobody expected us to build something like the GT 86. I want to give the world a shock."
- Tada-san, Toyota Chief Engineer I think that's a very exciting quote from the interview. Obviously the big splash made from the GT86 is increasing the chances of green-lighting new sports car projects from Toyota. I really appreciate this interview. It seems that Tada-san was able to get his design to come into fruition by overcoming many critics from within Toyota. He challenged the modern ideas of what a sports car needs (number based statistics) and presented a design that offered substance and soul. And from a design standpoint, that's the sweet spot. That's the reason people buy abstract art, or any art for that matter.. for big bucks. Except in our case, the FRS/BRZ/GT86 is the affordable gem any petrol head can afford.

Yea I also got the feeling in the interview of how down to earth Tada really is, in his personal life and in his work. I was hoping he would of gone the direction of a new mr2 for the next car but a supra would be good too... maybe the mr2 will come after the supra lol i could only hope.

Wow, I really enjoyed reading... Thanks, OP.
It gives me chills on a possible next Supra. I'd love to own it too if it carries the same driver enjoyment and feel of the GT 86 / FR-S / BRZ (and a fair price tag).

Amazing article with some interesting insight. It's really quite interesting that everyone thought he was crazy until they finally built one and said get in and just like that corporate was sold. That echos so many people's opinions about the car when they say it has something numbers don't show.
Here's one thing I'm interested to know more about: "And still aiming, as their appearance in Scotland is, aside from a monster hunt, to test out some minor aero tweaks and shock absorbers, which will be ready at some point early next year. It's barely gone on sale, and already these two want more." Is this the TRD stuff or is this going to be put on for the 2014's? |

If the wording wasn't changed around by a publicist as is typically the case with this stuff...then bravo! I like the way Mr. Tada thinks.

Does this mean we're getting a new Supra and baby sub-86/FR-S?

I think the 86 is already the 'baby'. I'd say Supra is the next in line, seeing how there's no Toyota matching up with the Z, Genesis, or Mustang.

I'd like to hear their opinion on the choice of tires on the car. After all the attention to detail that was poured into this car, I can't imagine they supported the decision to put those lousy tires on.

And heres an old article. Toyota considering Supra successor and sub-86 sports car Toyota is flush with buzz surrounding the company's new 86 sports car, and that could translate into additional performance models if the vehicle's chief engineer has anything to say about it. The Sydney Morning Herald reports that Tetsuya Tada, the mind that brought the Toyota 86 to life, believes there's room in the stable for two additional sports cars. Tada is quoted as saying that while the 86 is a mid-sized sports car, he'd like to see one vehicle positioned below the boxer-powered coupe as well as an additional model slotted higher in the lineup. The latter machine could potentially be a successor to the Supra, complete with a high-horsepower engine and rear wheel drive. Like the 86, that vehicle would be another collaborative project between Toyota and Subaru. Unfortunately, Tada is quick to say that nothing has been decided as of yet. Keep your fingers crossed. http://www.autoblog.com/2011/12/04/t...86-sports-car/

Looks interesting, but something in my mind says it probably wouldn't make it stateside even if it was made. It would be even more of a niche car than the FR-S, and well.. you know how American consumerism is...

Yep I take it as a new competitor to the evo/sti/370 bracket and then the all out, BMW collab attack on the GTR.
