I didn't really notice a difference. I just wanted to clean up the engine bay a bit and fully remove the whole thing. That and I noticed people were just plugging the little rubber piece after I'd already pulled it out.

Late to party but I figure I could share my journey in plugging up the hole....

Wasn't to fond of just stuffing it up with cotton, or re-purposing secret 12V cover. I live in Canada, so idk... my first instinct was Canadian Tire.

I found the ones suggested "DORMAN Panel Trim Fastener", but you need to request from the auto desk as the inventory thing said "Ask an Associate". Further... the design looked like it might not be easy to pull out.

Went to Home Depot next cuz it was close, couldn't find the right Crown Bolt nylon type covers, only metal ones.

In the end I went to Lowe's, Hardware section where you find drawers with all the screws, nuts, fasteners. Here is a pic of the packaging...



You need the #881289 7/8 size, two for $2.79. Did a quick test, can plug and unplug easily. Cabin sounds cleaner, less engine rasp and more smoother tones. Even on stock muffler it sounds better. Great mod

When you remove the entire sound tube and plug up the hole, do you also need to do anything on the firewall side or just the passenger side (LHD - US)?

Normally one plug takes up the entire tunnel, so yes you don’t need 2 plugs.

I'm a motorcycle guy who has a tendency to just remove things that don't make you go faster. This collection of plastic, rubber and clips fits that description to a tee.
I had a rubber bung plug in the garage that fit nicely into the hole off the intake. I pulled one of the elbows off the hose on the firewall end and shoved a end cap in the opening to block sound and moisture from getting into the cabin.
Job done. Now time to go for a ride and contemplate making the car louder with an aftermarket header...

Is there a difference in sound between deleting the tube entirely vs just plugging the hole?

Plugging the hole made the drone on my TRD catback way more noticeable. Im guessing if the TRD causes the drone then its coming through the bottom of my car and has nothing to do with the engine bay, but i just thought id check. Has anyone plugged the hole, driven for a while, and then deleted the tube entirely?

So glad I stumbled upon this thread. Years ago, I didn't mind a noisy interior at all and even when out of my way to increase it. I'm older and more easily annoyed now... LOL!

This car seemed oddly noisy, but I was chalking it up to the TRD exhaust the car came with along with the lack of sound deadening. Not a real pleasant noise either, but not the worst thing I've heard.

I read through the full thread and figured it sounded easy enough and I already had the 12V adapter cover in the glovebox anyway, so it would be free to test it.

With how easy it sounded, I decided to time myself just for fun, too. From the moment I opened the passenger door to the moment I closed it when finished took all of 63 seconds, and that included trying to press the adapter in a bit harder to make sure it was actually in.

I wish I'd have known about this before the 200-mile drive home with the car last week. It's a subtle but VERY welcome difference.

I do love open-intake induction sound, but that's not what you get from the factory sound tube. The engine sounds smoother and more "upscale" to a certain degree. I didn't realize how "cheap" the sound tube made the car sound inside.

Very happy with the outcome of the easiest and cheapest (free!) mode I've ever done to a car. Thanks!

Just tried this mod again. I initially tried it when running a full exhaust setup, then took it off when I switched to just a CBE thinking I'd enjoy some more sound. I was wrong. Sounds much better plugged. Engine sounds less course and thrashy. Much more enjoyable now.

Just did the 12v plug mod, makes a massive difference, I'm sure the wife will be a bit more relaxed now.

I don't have quantitative data to support my theory, but my guess is that blocking sound with piece of plastic is not as good as blocking it with a material specifically made to reduce noise. I already had disposable ear plugs (32dB NRR) and the 2 of them, side by side, fit and expand perfectly into the tube below the glove-box.
