Many of the things people now consider required creature comforts didn't exist in anything but the very top end luxury cars until the late 90s or so. Anybody that ever daily drove a Chevette, Omni or Dart back in the day would consider the Twins a Cadillac in comparison. Hell, I daily drove a base model 58 Ford for three years through the 90s so I laugh at the concept that I am "sacrificing" a thing driving the FRS.

Chevette here! It was what I could afford at the time but my god what a "basic piece of transportation" that was. Worse two years of my automotive driving experience there....

I just don't get it. Think about it, the Limited BRZ has everything an average luxury car had in the late 90's. The only difference between it and the Viggen I owned is the drive wheels and it has a little less power.

I had a rotted out Citation (bigger Chevette). It had cooled seats since there was no floor and the whole back seat was a cup holder becuase I just threw my empty coffee cups back there for a year. Modded the tires by using 4 totally different sizes that I picked up off the side of the road on garbage day. Was retired when the rear door skin blew off on the highway. The sad fact is that it was one of the better beaters I was forced to drive back in my poor white trash days.

I think that may be where the whole idea behind cooled seats came from, some auto engineer that drove a beater in college was sitting at his drawing board one day reminiscing about the old days and how much he missed having that air flow on a hot day.

Also had heated seats since the tomato soup cans and hose clamps holding the exhaust together leaked really badly right under the driver seat. Was really easy to nap in the car while at an idle.

True story- once I had to yell at a student I was instructing for adjusting his heated/cooled seat temps on the track.

And that's also why you can't buy a decent, basic car for under $27,000. Partial monetary inflation, part regulatory inflation, part standard feature inflation.

Kia Optima is crazy good for starting at $22k. Even the Rio ($15k) and Forte ($18k) are nice. Toyota Corolla is car that is nice, lasts forever and way under $27k You can get a Camry or an Accord with an option or two for $27k. My personal favorite under $27k for the "applicance desiring driver" is Subaru Impreza, though you can get a base forester with a few options for $27k! There a ton of reasonably nice other cars for under $27k. Hell, you can get full size pickup trucks for $27k (They start at $28k but GM and Ford always have big incentives). The Colorado is well under $27k and that's really nice for what it is. Also: If anything the cost of cars relative to inflation has gone down. I'd also agrue quality relative to the times has gone up. 20 years ago there were a lot of legitimately shitty cars, relative to the times. There really isn't a bad car these days.

Was sort of in jest. People's tolerance for things that make them uncomfortable seems to be lower than it needs to be, that's all I'm saying

Yeah, I mean I wouldn't want to DD a 1988 Accord if it was brand new. I'd be happy to DD a 2018 Accord.
