Downshift rattle??
I just noticed it heading to my gfs house i down shift and rev match (mind you not over revving to make clutch chatter) but when i blip the gas pedal yes the rpms go up and the exhaust sounds increase obviously but i hear a fairly noticeable rattle from the engine bay. I thought it was just an intake sound so i didnt care but it happened very time i shift down to third and blip the revs to about 3k approx. anyone else gear it? Or is it just me?

I have a weird rattle comming from my tranny too, im hoping its nothing serious but think im going to head over to the dealer and have them check it out, mine rattles at around 3k rpms as well and the higher the rpm's go the worse the rattle gets. It sounds as if something inside the tranny is loose or something?

Open the hood and give the cabin sound generator a couple of taps. Wedge something between that and the manifold and go for a drive. Let us know if it goes away.

From a while back. I've been experiencing this noise since day one. I also notice that I'll get a heavy amount of clutch noise during these rattling sessions: If I push the clutch pedal all the way in while it rattles like this I'll hear something like a "ka-thunk" like the clutch is loose or something. Also, if I'm going about 10mph and bring the clutch pedal up into 2nd the clutch will have a noticeable engagement noise, once again like it is loose. Edit: I'd also like to point out, I've been out of break-in for a couple weeks now and have found plenty of time to open the engine up. The rattling gets significantly worse after getting near the red line a few times in a trip. Last edited by nataku; 07-13-2012 at 01:47 PM. |

** I posted this in another thread but I think it applies to the OP.** The transmission is Aisin and it's a very close relative to the manual gearbox in the RWD 6MT used in the Lexus IS250. I drove a 2006 MT IS250 for two years, from brand new until 2008 (approx 35,000 miles). From my experience, I have heard VERY similar noises as described by the OP. I even had the infamous "jar of marbles" sound when shifting lower gears at slower speeds. I never had any mechanical problems with the IS MT clutch or tranny. I sold it to a work colleague and she and her husband drove it another 25k miles with no issues. I'm not saying you don't have an issue to be addressed, but I can say from my experiences the tranny and clutch did have a few quirky noises in my IS. BTW - I drove that IS hard and loved every minute of it.

I'm getting something similar in 4-3 downshifts, though today I got it in a 5-4 downshift. Before I checked out this thread, I would've described it as a sort of "scraping" sound, though "jar of marbles" sounds close. Maybe that's the transmission's way of telling me that I'm cutting it close on the clutch pedal release. I'm at 5500 miles now (yes, since June 1st; I guess I'm driving a bit too much).
