Until recently, if you wanted an affordable short shifter for your FRS, BRZ, or 86 you’d probably go with Kartboy, because of it’s 28.5% throw reduction. But with the release of the new IRP shifter, we now have a better option.



The IRP shifter is more expensive, but for the extra price you get a shifter that is more than twice as short compared to anything else in it’s price range. That’s right, this thing reduces throws by 60%. Not only is it a shorter throw, but it’s also taller, so you’ll spend less time shifting and more time with both hands on the wheel.



However, installation will be a bit more laborious than swapping in a traditional short throw shifter. The stock shifter and shifter carrier will need to be permanently removed. In order to gain access to the shifter carrier, the transmission and driveshaft will need to be lowered a couple inches. This can easily done by loosening the transmission mount and the center driveshaft mount. Below is a diagram that better illustrates this process.




With that said, it’s 100% worth it for the quick notchy shifts you get in exchange. This is a perfect setup for autocross, track days, and even for the guys out there drifting. Truly the shortest shifts you can get in this price range.

Also seems a bit odd to me.. they reduce throw by 60%, then add 3 inches (or more) of height to the hand..

Watching the video it doesn't seem any shorter than my Kartboy, since the Kartboy has the hand position lower.

Not to put too fine a point in it but, it's 60% reduced throw at that height.

If you don't understand the height, or want something shorter, then this isn't for you.

Really? That's good to know! That would make sense that that's how they measure it.. but seems hard to pull off 60% reduced throw with an increase in shaft length like that... I'd like to see some geometric drawings and/or have someone measure the movement of their hand so that I could compare to the Kartboy..

I'll be the first to admit that it's not for me. I've never minded the reach down on or off track since that's what I'm used to and it's been that way in every manual car I've driven (except my Toyota Pickup).

I could be wrong but I'm almost positive this is a 60% decrease in the angle of throw. If this was short it would be the same angle of travel but would move very little linearly. The stock shifter would practically smash into the dash at that height, or would go through it. I think I've seen samurai sword shifters that just touch the dash.

This shifter is for ultimate control, proximity and feel during 3/9 position steering at the track. I can't imagine shifting around town with this. I like to rest my elbow on my arm rest and relax my hand on the shifter. Plus i steer at a 4/8 position so the stock height is already in line and ideally positioned.

It's right on their (irp) site, 60% reduction in throw.

Most short shifters are constrained by using the stock pivot point. This and cae bin that and move the pivot higher than stock lengthening the lever arm between the pivot and the shifter linkage.

So then if it's angle reduction, then it's not at the hand height (the linear portion)..

I understand the point of it, and it really isn't about the reduction in throw, but the reduction PLUS the extension... so in reality, you have an almost stock linear throw at the position of your hand. Because as you said, if you didn't reduce the throw and you moved the position of the hand, you would go through the radio.
