It reminds me of a slightly bigger 2+2 Cayman, which is not a bad thing.

I cant imagine Toyota selling this alongside the 86. Maybe this would replace it??

Why not? It's going to be at least twice as much as the 86.

Just seems like a big commitment. Especially coming from a car company that had zero sports cars in their line up just 4 years ago. And they split those development cost with another brand.

Yes it is a big commitment but the model line up is only a small indicator of the sports car/motorsports knowledge that Toyota has along with the years of research and development completed before a sports car is put into production.

These are just the examples I'm aware of: In the 2000s Toyota had an F1 team, participated in Japanese touring car, supplied engines to Formula Nippon. More recently they participated in Le Mans with their hybrid LMP1, endurance racing with the LFA and 86.

On the road Toyota took 10 years to develop the LFA and a few years to develop the 86 (with Subaru that has motorsports experience as well). Yes there were years where there were no Toyota sports cars available but they were actively working new models.

All the experience and pedigree is there and you can rest assured that all of Toyota's know how and capabilities will be represented in the new Supra.

Gazoo would be a fun name for their performance variant. Instead of Type- S or -R, GT, GT-S, et. al. But I think Toyota learned their lesson after Scion and won't go and try to rebadge products under different brand names, even if it is sold out of a Toyota dealer.

I agree with all of this but somethings to consider; Toyota's chief suspension guru died in an LFA like a 1 or 2 years ago. Not 100% sure when, just remember reading he was in an LFA, testing at the Nurburgring. He played a big roll in developing our suspension. Also, if the next gen 86 is coming in 2019, shouldn't we be seeing test mules out?

I think the Kouki 86 will be sold for 4 model years. MY17-MY20.

Probably won't see a next gen 86 until MY21.
