People really do this? I can’t imagine not buying a RWD car because winter is coming. What about the winter after that? Trade it in before halloween?

It isn't really the fact that it is RWD and we know that eventually it will either see a winter or get stored away but why not hold out until spring and miss at least one winter if you have the ability?
If there was some incentive to buy in the fall then that makes a difference. There usually isn't though so why not just wait?

It's hard for me to imagine someone buying a new sports car and then barely using it for the first 5 months of ownership. Wouldn't you wait until you can use it to buy it? In the northern states I suspect sports car and convertible sales are much stronger in Spring than late Fall.

Actually, given you are likely to get a better price, that is exactly when I would buy it.

The thing is that most of the northern dealers (at least around here) know they are not going to sell them in the winter but they will fly out the door in the spring so there is rarely any deals to be had. They are not in a hurry to move them so won't take a loss for just holding them a few months.

Wonder how long this will last. There may not be a very much inventory for them to sell/hold on to.

I read it as they start on July 16 not that it is only July 16. One day is not even news worthy if that is what they are planning.
This will be the second or third time that the plant has been idled.
The one plant we build sub assembly modules for in Windsor went down for 5 days about 7 weeks ago. They still don't know when they are actually starting up again. Our orders at the manufacturing plant go up and down every day to the point we have no clue what to make.

Meanwhile, at my local GM dealer with the multi-hundred car parking lot, they are down to inventory you can count while stopped at a stoplight.

7 Silverado trucks of various configurations
1 Tahoe
1 Suburban
3 Buicks
4 various work trucks

Meanwhile in the last two weeks I have seen truck after truck after truck of shiney new Challengers and Chargers going down the highway to the US border. They are made about an hour away from here and I have never seen so many haulers on the highway before. Don't know if they had them stockpiled and are just shipping now or if they are actually assembling that fast but there are a sitload of them.

I mean they’re like the oldest car still in production today. I doubt there’s a huge chip shortage for semiconductor architectures that were designed in the late 90s

Sounds to me like they got a chip delivery for cars already manufactured, but who knows.
